Linking to my recent boss battle thread (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=99244&highlight=boss+battles), and updating another old thread (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=32039&highlight=boss+battles) (this time started by Fragony).

Post your favourite boss battles here. Use spoiler tags where appropriate.

Mysteries of the Sith, final boss
The lead in to the fight was brilliant. Once you made it to the central lift you were lowered into a pit, so dark you could see nothing but your character illuminated by the glow of her lightsabre. Your force pool drained away to nothing. All the while your fallen master lectured you on how feeble you were, how powerless, how superior the darkside was. A blinding flash restored the light, and revealed you were sealed in a tiny chamber with Kyle Katarn, the playable hero of the previous 2 games.

The only way to win was to do the last thing gamers are trained to think of - put your weapon away and stand there to get hit. Kyle was invincible, and you were a jedi. In the days before the prequel trilogy jedi didn't kill their dark counterparts. They tried to redeem them.

Bongo Bongo, Ocarina of Time.
It's a gaint pair of floating hands which play a massive bongo drum. You're standing on the skin of said drum, and end up bouncing about to the beat. I don't think I've seen a stranger boss and battle arena.

The end of TS:FS (Tiberian Sun:Firestorm) was pretty amusing the first that happened I went: OMFG WTF? I sent my riduclous amount of titans at it, did little good, sent my juggernaughts, took some chunks out of it but not enough, it seemed all hope was but then I heard the "Unit under attack" by vinehole and relised I hadnt used my bombers and bombed the giant robot back to demented borg with a neapolian complex teletubby land, if that can be counted as a Boss battle

Shadow of the Colossus. The entire game was one big boss rush mode.

The stoopid boss fight in Crysis. You are unarmed, General Kyong is on a platform above you wielding some sort of supergun and being supposedly invincible.

I simply jumped up to his level and punched him to death with my fists before he could pull the trigger. :laugh4:

Later I heard that throwing a barrel at him works even better. Instakill.

The boss from Goldeneye 007. Dont ask me why, but I enjoyed that level. (A tip, knock him off of the edge...he will die as fast as you in that situation.)

The bosses at the end of each labyrinth in the second Zelda for NES. Somehow this game told a story that couldn't be surpassed with words just through the use of setting and presentation during gameplay. Immersion without sacrificing gameplay... atmosphere without sacrificing a streamlined design... I thought this was an awesome game, superior to the first Zelda IMO. But then again, I'm partial to difficult sidescrollers!

Pigsie in Manhunt, that was one scary boss-battle.

Well, quite obviously, I'd say that MMORPG's offer the best boss battles.

Killing an evil dude with the help of 9 to 39 other people, after hours spent learning the encounter is much more rewarding than doing it alone in a few minutes ;)

As such, I'd say that Kael'thas from WoW is probably one of the coolest boss ever designed.

Ganon from Zelda III (on Snes) was quite a great boss aswell. Then come the optional-hardcore bosses from FF7 and FF10, and some end-game vilains from Baldur's Gate II (Irenicus)

Bah, killing the lower level bosses (Van Cleef- best boss ever imo :laugh4:), much more fun. Plus all the high level raids are all focused on killing all the best characters Warcraft has ever produced

I'm not sure if you'd call it so much a boss battle but the final run and gun sequence in Half-life 2 with the super charged gravity gun was insanely fun.

Oh and the fight with "It" from ResE 4. Such a rush trying to dodge your way through the gauntlet to get to the point where you can actually fight him/kill him.

The greatest boss battle of all time is Psycho Mantis in Metal Gear Solid. Nothing freakier than a guy who can predict where and when you'll actually shoot.

I don't know if anyone here has played 'Serious Sam the First Encounter' or its sequel, but the boss battles in both, all of them, are totally crazy. You can go wild with bazookas, handheld canons, shotguns etc etc I specially loved the one with the fire golem in First Encounter. Awesome.

FF7, Sephiroth, in his second form. Pure Awesomeness.

Also to be noted from FF7 are Emerald and Ruby Weapon. Very interesting battles.

I have too many...Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts.

Sure is, after the terrifying encounter as Jack where you can't hurt it ripping it's jaws is pure gaming bliss. Awesome game finished it just recently, people thinking Half-Life 2 is the best cinematic shooter really should try it.

D2 LoD has some great boss battles, indeed. I haven't tried hardcore, but I do still play the normal ladder. I recently enjoyed soloing the Big Three (Ubers Mephisto, Diablo and Baal) in Uber Tristram with my ultimate D2 character to date, a Smiter Paladin. It took ages of trading and rune collecting, but I could finally afford the good gear. Man, what a difference!

Before the Ubers were around, it was an ultimate rush when I first solo'd Hell Baal with my Bone/Summoner necromancer. Now, that seems almost laughable, but back then it was quite an accomplishment, before I learned the finer points of character design.

Hmmm ... it's been a while ... I better log into my accounts or I'm going to lose a D2 LoD fortune, including at least two of every high rune!

I personally think the Ancients aren't THAT hard to beat even if you're hardcore. It is simply because any reasonably thought out build with half decent equipment (which is usually not just pretty decent in b.net terms) can easily take them out. You just can't be stupid and think that even though your merc just died, you can still tank the last extra strong/ cursed ancient with your sorc.

A much bigger challenge, imo, is to go through Chaos Sanctuary Hell with a Melee only hardcore character. If its a well built character, chances are that even just two hits will mean death.

Even worse: a spawn containing the following in the areas leading up to Baal's minions: Gloams, OKs, CE little guys, frenzytaurs packs with nasty mods.

The first time I soloed Hell Ancients was with an untwinked skelemancer that also fully soloed all areas in all difficulties and was completely isolated from trade. Gear was terribad by any standard. I agree that well-equipped characters can handle most situations in D2 quite easily, hardcore or not, however that wasn't the point.

Yes, of course it's a bigger challenge. Even other boss battles in D2 arguably offer a "bigger challenge." However, this thread is about favourite boss battles, not most challenging areas or even most challenging boss battles. The above comments are simply irrelevant.

The Ancients boss battle is interesting because you have multiple attackers to consider, and those attackers also have random abilities that you can also reroll if you so choose. Most other boss fights are far more static. Add to that the thrill of Hardcore mode (if you die even once, character is permanently deleted, wasting many hours of gametime) and a heightened chance of failure because of substandard gear, and you get the best boss battle I've ever played. YMMV, of course. ~;)
