last night i was playing byz on hard and fighting egypt. despite an alliance they stabbed me in the back by sinking one of my ship. in itself a weird move, knowing there are 3 big armies bordering their provinces, in which they had armies 2 times the size of mine. logical would have been to attack those armies directly, i'd think.

since offense is the best defence i attacked the ai in palestine with all my armies. in the first battle there was no fighting at all. the egyptian army, bigger in numbers, saw my troops and retreated immediately. weird.

in the second battle i fought in syria with approx 1000 against 2000 - 2500 men. in the first wave i killed the ai general. now what happened was that his troops, present on the battlefield routed immediately. what happened next was that all the reserve troops he sent immediately routed when my treb archers fired one shot. of course it ended up a long, tedious battle because i didnt have to fight at all and the ai kept bringing reinforcements on the field, which retreated after 5 min. weird!

i moved my armies out of syria back to conquered palestine and hit the end year button. next turn the ai moves its armies back to syria. all of a sudden all my armies which were in palestine, were in syria again as if been teleported!!! how weird!

And you then had to fight a defensive battle in Syria, yes? A similar thing used to happen in STW and it's to do with how the AI handles the moves. Although you get to move first all the moves (yours AND the AI's) are calculated simultaneously upon hitting the 'End Turn' button. At which point the AI see's your army about to march out as it's army marches in. So you actually never got to leave that province. THink of it not as making your moves "1 step before the AI" or "in alternate turns" but as the move you "would LIKE to make, if possible!". So, you would like to move back to palestine but when the moves are ALL calculated you find you have been invaded before you could get out! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

It's something like that - I'm probably not explaining it too clearly since I'm estimating from observations. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

i kinda figured that but it is still strange. i find it annoying that for example, after i invade a country, the ai is able to move some extra armies from other provinces, while i cannot do the same thing if it happens to me!
