View Full Version : New Unit Formations?

Why are my units in new formations on the battle map?

Sometimes they are in a rectangle like in plain RTW; other times they are in squares. My missles troops are packed together sometimes and spread apart other times.

Is this new to EB? If so, why is not consistant, ie sqaure units; checkered placement in one battle; old school RTW units and formations the next battle?

You know, you are rather narrow-minded for a zarasophist.

On a somewhat related note... how come when I have a unit manning a battering ram and then I take them off it, they keep the battering ram formation?

No idea, but if it was a hectic siege, something like that would put a real dhampir on the situation.

I vote for a Giraffe-shaped formation.

Yes, so would I. I guess that is why I originally posted it.

If you desire the answer, you must first become one with the question.

I don't think we can randomize the deployment for each unit, even if we wanted to. Could you post screenshots of the initial deployment of a given unit where it's different from battle to battle?

i have an example but not screenshot:

the sweboz core spearmen unit sometimes is arranged in ranks of 4 by 8 (i play tiny unit size), but on some battles they are arranged as 2 lines or 12 or so, and then a third shorter line behind them....

Well, the main reason behind this inconsistency is that the formations are generally made for large (and huge) unit sizes. Almost all formations (including vanilla ones) look somehow screwed up on tiny as there aren't simply enough men on the field. We can try to balance the formations so that they would look remotely like what they should on small, but it's not exactly easy - inter-unit spacing and unit depth can not be scaled with regards to unit size; they're constant on all sizes, which is just plain dumb.

is there a way of changing the formation, should your germanic spearmen be in lines when you want them in blocks?

You mean besides good old "click and drag" ? ~;p

The default number of ranks is the last number (before "square") in the unit's "formation" line in export_descr_unit.txt.
