View Full Version : Is it supposed to be like this?

So I've tried a couple campaigns.
Always somewhere down the road an AI daimyo gets killed by someone and then his entire faction goes and I'm stuck here going hmmmmmmmmmmm and feeling the unsatisfiction of not being able to kick him out myself.
Oh and lots of his lands went to someone else. So instead of facing many weak factions, I have to face one or two who has like 1/3 of Japan each.
Is it supposed to be like this?
I don't experience it myself very much, but it seems that a lot of players eventually experience a 'Hojo Horde' of some kind.
If you think of it, it's pretty realistic actually. First there's the struggle of many small Daimyo, then some get big (Nobunaga, Ieyasu, etc) and duke it out in a major battle.
Usually when they have an ally at the moment their last family member is killed, most of their lands take the side of that ally in stead of the rebels.
However, I you prefer fighting small clans instead of big clans and/or rebels, don't make an effort to kill daimyo's. It's very easy to wipe out clans in Stw, if you don't want to, you have to actually look out for not killing too many. ~;) :wall:

Except of course they got killed by other clans.
And sure in the end it's supposed to be big daimyos vs big daimyos. But that's by the daimyos wiping out opponents, not inheriting from allies.

A very annoying event, indeed, to have an enemy (or potential enemy) clan suddenly have their ranks swelled by the elimination of one of their allies. I can think of only one time in all of the campaigns I've played, where I was the beneficiary, and even then, I only picked up one or two provinces, IIRC.
OTOH, I can only recall one campaign where a clan got immediate benefit from inheriting an ally's provinces, but it nearly caused me to quit my campaign:furious3:
What really got me angry was that I was allied to the same clan, and I was that clan's first ally. I had always heard that it's the first ally that picks up any provinces that don't go ronin........but not in this case:inquisitive:
And as "icing on the cake", the very next turn, my "ally" launches a massive attack on Shinano (which was currently in my possession) from the provinces he'd just acquired. :help:
I hung on by a fingernail............but it disrupted my expansion plans considerably:shame:
I spared no expense, and gave no quarter in building up for a massive counter-attack, and took great pleasure in totally crushing my former "ally."
Days later (in real-world terms), when I had the "dishonorable" Daimyo cornered and awaiting his death sentence to be executed, I had to sit back in my chair and laugh at how emotionally involved I had become :laugh4:
I took GREAT pleasure in seeing "justice" served when my YC ran the "whipped dog" down as he tried to escape the battlefield.

Just what IS it about this game that has this effect?
I have never felt emotional about any game-in MTW, Id look on with detachment at invading Egyptians, or the encroaching Byz. I certainly wouldn t say: "I want so-and-so s head on a platter by tomorrow-no yesterday."
When I started an Uesugi game on Hard, to which I was not even committed, Hojo invaded again and again, and I was incensed! I wanted Lord Hojo and his family to be dragged behind galloping YCs and then beheaded and ...
Well, you see what I mean.
Great game.

For sure. I get pissed on some Daimyo's now and then as well.. revenge it certainly part of the game :laugh4:
And, in my Mongols vs. Hojo campaign I'm feeling really bad about slaughtering all those samurai. When they rout at the end of battle I sit back and watch my cavalry chase 'em down, and I feel very guilty + sorry for those guys.
Makes it a great game indeed. ~:):balloon2:
It indeed has that effect. I remember a certain Oda Daimyo who really wanted my Imagawa lands.. and when I killed him, his son seemed to have a much less agressive character and immediately offered peace. But no! He had to pay for his father's deeds! :beam:
Not feeling involved is one of the reasons I never finished a MTW campaign. Even though a STW campaign isn't always that nice when I just have to roll up the last resistence, it's something that must be completed.

I've no idea but more than once I've ordered men to commit seppuku because they routed in battle. That can get costly so I try not to do it :)
You can do it after you win the campaign Jef ;)
