View Full Version : Where are EB players from?

Teleklos Archelaou
03-16-2008, 05:22
Simple question that I saw on the main RTW forum here and I thought it would be interesting to see where EB players fall in the poll. Both players and members feel free to reply!

Categories were determined arbitrarily by myself, so don't get too hung up on them, but please answer where you live (if you are on a brief vacation, note your home, not your current vacation place). I'll divide up a few places that I have a hunch EB is popular in though (after seeing folks posting in EB fora for a few years now), so don't get too worried that there are multiple north european entries and few in all of africa (as examples), or if your country was mentioned in a group instead of by itself.

Please don't let this degenerate into something nasty, but this could be really cool to see where EB players are from. :2thumbsup:

And if your country isn't mentioned at all or is missed, please just vote in the closest category. Thanks! Oh, and names are not mentioned - just the number of votes in each category is recorded.

I am very annoyed. Where's Singapore, or even Southeast Asia? I'm from Singapore but I can't vote. Why did you include Indonesia and Philippines but not any other Southeast Asian country? I do most vehemently protest. >:\ I refuse to vote in the nearest category because I most definitely am not Indonesian or Filipino or 'Oceanian', and I hope at least to see 'Southeast Asia' there because it is an extremely poor oversight on your part.

Selection of categories should be neutral, not skewed just because you think it should be that way. It's only an assumption.

Pez, I just made the divisions up while looking at an atlas laying on the desk. I didn't want to take a full day thinking about the absolute best way to divide the world up and the way to keep every single person from getting upset at the divisions (not humanely possible - only 30 vote slots exist). I specifically know about you being in Singapore man - I've been there. I'm not forgetting it. What you ask for "Southeast Asia" is there, but it's not by itself - it's with India/Pakistan, and the number of players we have from there is probably going to be small so I didn't divide them up like I did other places where I see posters saying they are from more often. Chill out and read my first post about not getting hung up on this. I didn't expect this sort of a response from you.

Also - I missed Poland at first and wasn't sure which group was best to put it in.

Finally - Sorry that I just plain missed Lithuania.

Well next time Teleklos might just dump the whole of the US including Canada as one voting option. ~;) (Not such a bad idea actually given the fact that most people in here appear to be from Europe anyways, and that the US attracts roughly as many voters as the UK or Germany or The Netherlands/Belgium in these kind of polls...?)

Then we have a few poll slots left to flesh out Asia. Mind you, Pez, we've had a couple of similar polls before and even though Chinese is spoken by a very large number of people - Chinese wasn't voted for much.

Sorry about that outburst. I take your point. Should've just arranged it by continent/region in future ;-) People will probably announce their exact locations, and maybe even give you their addresses, telephone numbers and availability at night even if the poll just said 'South Asia, Middle East, Central Asia, West Europe, North America, etc'.

But really, looking at an atlas for a while isn't enough to do this, considering the nature of the choices involved and the fact that there are some very nationally-minded people here. (including me, I'm discovering a vein of national...pride?...I never knew I had)Cheers, though. I'm cool. It was silly, now that I look back on it.

I won't complain, but put Slovenia together with them next time. We only became part of the bloody balkans after a series of really bad mistakes and national hopes that lead us astray. We won't repeat the same mistake again.

No nationalism here, all right?

I didn't vote in this poll, I'm Iranian, and what "baffles" me, in the humorous sense of the term, is the clustering of a huge, ethnically diverse area spanning significantly more ground than western Europe in its entirety (Dare I say the entire Europe?). It's not Teleklos' fault or anything, he really does try his best, but this simple obsevation does not deserve to be shrugged away as "nationalism". Iran alone spans more than three times the total area of Scandinavia, and it's not like it rivals Mongolia when it comes to official population figures either.

There are more Iranians playing this game and this mod, much thanks to my endorsement of it and mouth-by-mouth information. Your reasoning can be appreciated, but does not apply in this case. Kambiz is an easy target, and English is not one of his primary languages. This is what he meant, besides the anecdote of Iran's macro-historical significance.

Looking at the numbers TPC, I think the only mistakes I made was not putting BRazil and S.A. in one category, all of Africa in one category, and maybe putting Georgia/et al. into the Central Asian category, that would free up three more and I could have divided one of the ones that has a ton in it - like Ireland Scotland England, or one of the scandinavian ones. I totally grouped countries by the representation I have seen on the EB boards and general proximity. It may seem unfair to have two whole continents (SA and Africa) get only two categories, but that is how it should have been done if you are really interested in seeing where the players come from and only get 30 options. Going by where I've seen folks' "location" lines from that's why I put Brazil in its own (because we've had a few members from there), and Armenia/Georgia in their own, because we have had fans and members from there, though none of them are showing up here. The wide distribution of 4/3/5/2/4 etc. shows I was pretty close on most of them to "levelling" it out.

I really did not expect any sort of real irritation at this given the statements I made in my initial post. It really is probably best if I close this I think. The basic information sought after is visible even at this point, and since I started it I suppose I'll now close this little experiment and save us the trouble of all getting further irritated.
