View Full Version : You Play for Me!
As most of you are aware the Colosseum does not have any hot topics, most noticeable with the thread by Overlord of A.
I have had an idea of the Colosseum Frequenters picking my faction and telling me how to play. I will have the last say but you people are my advisors.
There will be an unlimited number of advisors and to add a sense of roleplaying it would be good if you could pick a historical character to represent.
Right, I don't think we need explanations, it is pretty straight forward. Which faction would you see me play as?

Are you playing vanilla Rome or a mod? If vanilla,I'm gonna think outside the box and say the Scipii. They have your run of the mill Roman legionary troops with the best gladiators, plus an expanded navy of corvus quinquiremes and deceres.
And for your advisors,do they have to be faction-oriented? If so,I'll represent Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus Major, the conquerer of Carthage (if I've got my Roman history straight).
But if not, then I choose Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, instead.
You have touched upon good points there, to make myself clear:
Vanilla RTW with no mods.
Advisors can be anyone, past or present you choose.

Okay, then definitely Scipii due to the above advantages.
In the case of advisors, then,I'm Alexander III of Macedonia, instead of the two Romans I named above.

I personally would possibly recommend going for one of the more difficult factions to add more of a need for the advisor. Easier factions most of the time will not really need any assistance from the advisers, while more difficult factions are more likely to result in the contribution of much more diverse tactics.
Scythia and Parthia are difficult economically, but I would be inclined to say they are too easy to play as on the battlefield - the AI doesn't know how to deal with horse archer tactics.
Due to this I would be inclined to say Numidia. They start out with a low quality economy and their forces are not really too almighty to say the least. This makes them more of a balanced challenge rather than the difficulty being focused on one area.
~:)
And who shall you advise me as OA?

Numidia seems like a good faction to use, not one of my favourites but that should work in Numidia's favour.
Gaius Scribonius Curio

I was going to recommend the Kingdom of the Parthians, but Omanes is right, battles can get very easy in the end. Rome is too overpowered imo, but thats just me.
If you do go the Romans, then I'd like to see a Scipionic Campaign, (I never bothered myself). But really I'd prefer to see maybe Pontus, Parthia (even with the above reasoning) or maybe a Barbarian campaign like Germania.
I'll be advising you in the guise of... who else... Gaius Scribonius Curio, friend of Mark Antony and Publius Clodius, husband of Fulvia, and Caesar's loyal Tribune of the Plebs!!!

For a variety of tactics rather than sticking to a single favoured tactic (i.e. phalanx-heavy for Greek Cities, full horse archer stacks for Parthia/Armenia/Scythia, etc.), I'd recommend Pontus. They have missile cavalry which can also perform as regular cavalry, regular infantry, as well as chariots and phalangites later on. Although not my favourite faction, its troop roster certainly promotes diverse battlefield tactics (IMO).
Is this going to be a PBeM kind of thing with writeups and such? I'd want to be one of the retinue members, it'd be interesting to do writeups from that perspective.

Just to correct you here, Scipio Africanus was the man who defeated Hannibal in the Second Punic War. Scipio Aemilianus was the man who destroyed Carthage in 146. He was Scipio Africanus' adopted son, so I suppose you were close enough.
Quirinus, I like your idea of Pontus. Does anyone have any objections to using them? As for PBem, I thought that I would be the only one playing and the other people playing the role of Senate or Council of Elders. I am not too sure that I know what you are meaning here. If you explain yourself then you could have a good idea.
http://history-world.org/PontusI.htm
have a look at this, it lists a lot of different characters that were involved in this hostory of pontus. I suggest that what we could do is apportion some characters, and try and develop a bit of strategy behind them regarding to what sort of advice.
Sylla for example would advise trying to avoid fighting romans as he was roman.
Tigranes would advocate avoiding conflict with the armenians
there are somecharacters who could also be set up as advisers.
regarding economy, Lucullus is said to be the historical character who bought many fruits etc into europe from pontus, he could be responsible for advising re building markets and agricultural developments perhaps?
http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/12234c.htm
Chalybes is mentioned as a pontic tribe whome the greeks named as the first smiths, perhaps can advise re building forges, blacksmiths etc etc.
just throwing some things out there.

Oh, no, I don't mean that we should all play it, just that you could take and post screenshots at regular intervals and/or just your battles, so that we can sort of construct a narrative out of your game. For example, say you fight a major battle, and the retinue member I'm roleplaying as is the Decorated Hero, I might write an account of the battle from the Decorated Hero's point of view. It doesn't have to be restricted to that ancillary-- people could take up roles as the Wise Man, Inventor, Drunken "Uncle", Priest of Hercules, Mistress........ or even the Evil Mother-in-Law. ~;)
I dunno, it doesn't really improve on your game, it just adds some flavour and makes it more interesting for the rest of us, I guess.
I think brave wants us to try and take the role of advisers, he posts the screen shots and gives us updates, and we advise what to do based on the characters we play.
every new turn we can all post what we want him to do based on what our 'characters' would do.
Your idea is good though as well, Im more than happy to play the drunken uncle, however I would draw the line at being the catamite should his faction leader adopt that trait!

As an adviser I would be Quintus Julius Cicero. Grandson of consul Lucius Julius Caesar. Son of Julia of the Patricians Julii family and Quintus Cicero the elder of equestrian family. Which gives me link to Gaius Julius Caesar as a distant relative and cousin of Marcus Tullius Cicero. I am a Populares Senator who had various jobs from aedile to quaestor of the empire. Supporter of Julius Caesar until his assassination and fled to Spain. Currently a rich merchant living in Carthage and friend of Marcus Aemilius Lepidus.

Publius Cornelius Scipio Aemilianus 'Scipio Minor', the man who completed the final destruction of Carthage was actually the adopted grandson of Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus 'Scipio Major'. The man who defeated Hannibal at Zama.
OK just to summarise the thread. The faction is Pontus and we have 4 in favour of historical advisors and 2 in favour of retinue advisors, with carbz voting each way.

Well afaik Omanes, Quintus Julius Cicero is a fictional character (please tell me if I'm wrong!), Cicero's brother (Quintus) was married to Pomponia, the sister of Atticus and his son was Quintus Tullius Cicero. Caesar's sisters, both Julia's, were married to Marcus Atius Balbus (maternal grandfather of Octavian) and Lucius Pinarius, later Quintus Pedius.
I don't pretend to be an expert either, I'm just going to try and advise along an honourable sort of line, (Curio as Tribune of the Plebs tried to prevent civil war by proposing that whatever Caesar gave up Pompey had to at the same time, otherwise he'd veto, he almost succeeded in averting it). If you want some ideas I can try and help you out, if you'd like to PM me/ tell me what sort of character you'd be interested in playing.
Of course thats if you want to and thats what Almighty Brave, King of Pontus had in mind! :laugh4:
EDIT: On a campaign note I'd recommend sending a diplomat to Armenia in an attempt to secure trade rights, and then on to Parthia in an attempt to secure an alliance (you never know when that might come in handy, particularly as you're both going to be at war with the Seleucids in the semi-long-term). ASAP annex Bithynia, its better for them to be under the rule of their rightful king, than a pack of invading Greeks! (From a pontic POV anyway, Mithradates was always trying to annex Bithynia).

we can use it in the manner that maybe we all agree to use it if there is a proposal that the dumbass AI would normally accept.

I’d advise to build road in both of the starting cities. Train peasants in Sinope and diplomat in Mazaka. Group a nice army and head for Galatia. Pontus is in a superb position to train mercenary of all sorts. Mercenary Hoplites, Cretan Archers, Mercenary Peltasts, Eastern Infantry, Cilician Pirates, Barbarian Mercenary, Barbarian Cavalry Mercenary, Scythian Archers and Sarmatian heavy cavarlry.

No seriously, its up to you which position you want to put people in. Although with what I've been saying so far maybe diplomatic advisor would be an appropriate post? So long as I can comment on other stuff as well I really don't mind.
Cicero I definitely would not be classified as an expert, I've never studied ancient history at any level, I just read a lot and tend to pick up useless bits of information. Nice background on your character though!

I definitely wouldn’t classify myself as an outstanding military general. My most important reason for victory on the battlefield is preparations before the battle, picking the right troops, make full use of spies and assassins. Using the same but effective tactics over and over again to achieve victory, if the enemy use any unpredictable tactics then I’d probably panic.
I’m fairly good at city management, but I wouldn’t want to wind up in a far away province. So I think I’ll have a go at diplomacy. They do get paid well, right?

The Menelaus in the Iliad is some sort of a hero who ended up reunited with Helen and lived happily after while everyone else all ended up dead (Priam, Achilles, Hector, Paris, Agamenemon…). While Pontus is really a great faction to play as, their only lacking IMO is the road network, at least let them have paved road, that’d help a lot.

If I remeber correctly when menelaus died his son had helen exiled. Back to the topic though, if I'm not mistaked the vbm mod gives eastern factions paved roads. It also makes AI expansion more interesting, adding alittle change from the normal vanilla campaign. Just a suggestion though.

As far as good guys and bad guys in ancient warfare,it's really a vague line between the two, because if it had been reversed, and Hektor and the Trojan army had invaded Sparta (Homeric Sparta,of course!),their sacking of the city would've been just as savage and violent as the Achaean army at Troy.

I think the Pontic campaign will be more fun than the Macedon campaign. The Macedon campaign is kind of fixed. You always get the same kind of campaign every time. While Pontus is much different. You may have different allies and enemy each time you play as them.
The King sat on his throne two steps above his advisors who were seated at a grand rustic table which could easily have seated 30 men. The fire flickered, the wind howled in through the bare window frames.
"As the Good King of Pontus I have deliberated and made a decision. I have a great array of talent sated before me. Now I have to make a decision that will make or break my people."
His advisors sat with rigid attention. All faces were on the king.
“I shall divide you advisors into the following categories: Military Advisors, Agent Advisors and Logistical Advisors. Now, the first category is rather simple, they will take care of the current military forces, advise me of any need for more and propose where we should strike and when.
My advisor to all things agent will completely advise me on diplomatic issues, subterfuge and the benefit of reducing opposition to my rightful lands.
And finally, my Masters of Logistics will oversee finance and construction.
I have a clear favourite to the Military advisor role, none other than Alexander III of Macedonia, The Scourge of Rome. To lead our forces to world domination.
The Agent advisors are a little tricky; the main candidate is someone who knows a thing of two about the highs and lows of Roman politics, introducing Gaius Scribonius Curio. The man himself.
An overwhelming supply of fictional advisors will be crammed into this final, important role. Omanes and QuintusJulius-Cicero will be co leaders, to them I shall entrust the foundations of our state."
A bit brief I know, it will get interesting now we are going to get started. If anyone else wants to join please pick your character, your desired role and you will be submitted.
