View Full Version : I know Greeks are tricky...

I'd almost killed the half-stack of Greeks that had decided to beseige Massalia, with only about 10 of the enemy general's bodyguard left to finish off with 4 units of Neitos, pinned in a corner with no escape.

I gradually picked them off one by one, until only the general was left. At this point things got a little silly. He must have been knocked down at least 50 times, and I'm not exagerating. After watching him get back up again for 2 minutes only to be knocked back down I decided to speed things up. Even at the quickest speed it still took another 2 minutes to kill him. If that's 6x speed, then that works out to almost a quarter of an hour that a single guy with a spear and a shield held off a couple of hundred fully armoured swordsmen!

And that's not all. Every time he got knocked down, my guys figured that the fight was over and started walking back to the town square. Suddenly the general would jump up and stick 1 in the back, before his buddy's put him back down again. Then they'd turn around and another would get a spear in the back! He must have taken out about 20 of my guys this way.

OK, so bring on the "turn your back" or "back to the wall" puns...

I have had several problems with generals with unusual longevity.

Long live the king.

And...

We spy the black birds feasting after battle,
well stocked by a hearty host all born to war.
Those butchered coils remain of prideful mortals,
remorse that knows more fight and an end in sight,
than common sense has any right to bare.

Why don't you just end the battle at that point?

If the AI only has a general left while you have half an army, then surely the game will regard the battle as a victory?

No, you´ll lose the battle.

Yeah, I had also this kind of fun with the greek general unit. Even pedites extraordinari needed quite a long time to kill the man.

Move your men away and charge him with cavalry.

Does anyone know is there a limit to the maximum amount of hitpoints a General can gain through traits etc? With combinations of traits it is fairly easy to get a decent amount of hit point bonuses, might have something to do wth it.

All the foot generals are hard to kill compared to the mounted ones.

It was actually quite funny to watch. Especially on fast-forward. I just needed a Benny Hill-type soundtrack...

Steve: There, we've finally killed that General. Let's all go down to the tavern for a dri-arrrrggghhh!
Mike: Holy crap! He's still alive! And he stabbed Steve in the back. Let's get him!

5 minutes later...

Mike: At last, we've killed that bugger. OK guys, now how about that dri-arrrggghhh!
Bob: Look out, he's not dead after all! Now Mike copped a spear in the back. Let's get him!

5 minutes later...

Bob: Finally, he's got to be dead this time. We'll leave the women to clean up this mess. Come on, down to the tav-arrrggghhh!
Joe: What? Still alive! Now Bob's been skewered! Let's get him!

5 minutes later...

Joe: That ought to do it. This time he's gone for sure.
Tom: Maybe we should just stab him a few more times while he's lying down. You know, just to be sure?
Joe: Tim, you're priceless! You're new to this whole Neitos thing, aren't you? See this sword? It's got 0.225 lethality. There's no way he could have survived this time. Come on, I'll buy you a drink. You are over 18, ri-arrrggghhh!

Apparently Alexander the Great had lots of hitpoints...

Even more when his horse wasn't factored in, it seems.

He was wearing breastplate of the bold.

+50 stamina and +83 defense rating.

Why use that when you have boots of escaping? You can totally dodge a magic missile with one of those.

I find often in that sort of situation that your own guys tend to get in the way of killing the leftovers.
Better to move 3 of them out of the way & let the one unit preferably the most fresh/best stats finish him off.
