Has anyone else found that these 40 men units fight extremely more effectively when dismounted compared to when they are mounted?

Once i start a crusade i tend to dismount these troops and use them as a shock element, leaving cav duties to mounted sergeants and light cav.

I'm probably stupid, but in 5 campaigns I still haven't figured out how to dismount.

In the placement section (before a battle starts) right click on the unit and its one of the options (second to bottom i think).

Only works with some units.

Supposedly Spanish Jinettes can dismount and fight as Spearmen but prior to one battle I was unable to dismount them.

Can they still throw their javs? Seems a waste to have them fight on foot, but would make sense in certain situations.

Some units, e.g. Chiv knights can dismount for any battle, but IIRC all cav can dismount for siege battles, attacker or defender.
IMO its not worth it except with elite units though, most cav becomes a pretty mundane foot unit, eg feudal sgts, that only has 40 troops in it. I'd rather take a proper sized infantry unit along to assault a castle with. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Jinettes become feudal sgts. Don't kow whether you can dismount them in the open field, but in sieges you can.

I like to do it when I am defending and have some woods to fight from. The enemy can bring all of the cav and archers they want and they will never be able to dislodge them.
