I've been playing the Extended Greek Mod for some time now and I've been constantly getting random CTDs for no reason (this isn't any kind of modding or hardware question, just, please, let me vent this harmlessly),and after just now redownloading and reinstalling it,what happens?
ROME: TOTAL REALISM LOADING & FACTION SELECT SCREENS and immidiate CTD upon selecting custom battle!!!!!!!!!!!
No offense to DimeBagHo as it is a great mod,no doubt, but I'm kinda getting fed up with all these problems. Would you guys suggest to me some good historically-based mods that don't require me to download complicated unzipping programs and are easy to install.

(Aside from EB,I mean. I've been to the EB website, but I have no clue how to install it.)

Now .. there is EB subforum .. you could check that out .. in the FAQ thread I think there is everything you need to know about it ..
but .. as I remember .. it will install into its own mod folder so there is nothing to go wrong .. just need to install it to the location where your RTW in offcourse ..

aside EB and XGM there is IBFD - Invasio Barbarorum - Flagellum Dei .. it's pretty good I think .... but it is set to the BI's timeframe ...

Roma Surrectum is rather good. Also consider SPQR:TW.

Sorry. Sometimes I'm not sure exactly where a certain topic belongs.

Update: I've finally managed to find a fairly simple download source for EB (Gamespot),but upon statup it doesn't go past the title screen. A couple of guys from the EB team are helping me in my thread in the EB subforum Bug & Technical Help section.

Update # 2: My notebook ain't powerful enough (according to Hax,no notebook is) for EB,so I'm downloading SPQR 6.4 at this moment.

No go for SPQR. Wouldn't install.
Attempting Roma Surrectum.

Couldn't find a download site for Roma Surrectum,so I tried Terrae Expugnandae, but got immidiate CTD on both attempted startups.

Does everyone have this much trouble with mods,or is it only me?

I'm just gonna find an extended map and a few little fixes, then go back to vanilla. Hopefully that'll be a bit less trouble. The mods can lock this thread up if they want to.
I'll post any questions in the Modding Questions section when it's necessary.
Thanks for the suggestions,guys.

They should be easy - I seem to have nearly every known mod installed on computer and working (just no time to play)

Make sure you have the right version of RTW/BI - that's 1.5/1.6 for most mods. Though some older ones still have versions for 1.2 around.

There are some versions of the game (Gold?) that come with BI and everyone assumes are upgraded, but actually aren't - or in one case installing BI downgrades the RTW installation to 1.3 which suits practically nothing.....

To check what version you are running before installing the mod go into first game menu - select options and look at number in top right hand corner of screen.

If you've had failed attempts at installing mods - especially those that don't come in mod-folders make sure you have got yourself back to a clean version before trying another mod. Hopefully you made a backup copy of your RTW folder before trying anything.....

Only other complication can be if you're running Vista - or if mod uses a particular RAR or .bat file installation method your computer doesn't like.

If you do want to try again Roma Surrectum DL links and instructions are here
http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=65725
that mod definitely overwrites vanilla files though - so do make sure you have a seperate clean copy of RTW 1.5 to put it on.

(we don't normally lock threads - some one else is likely to come along with similar question/problem so they may as well use this one)

My version is definitely RTW 1.5 / BI 1.6,that I know for sure. The problem I'm having now (which I've posted in the hard- and software-related threads (which I hope is the right area) is that I'm trying to put a fresh install in,but the system tells me that a previous install is already present. I'd installed ATG's Spartan Pack with the intention of adding a Realistic Hoplites & Phalangists patch after that, then when I checked to see if my selected skin had been installed,it said "Mercenary X-Pack" in the lower right corner of the menu, and the troop rosters for several factions were complete reskins that I'd seen in SPQR screenshots.
I'm thinking that, all this time, the problem wasn't the mods, but that the game wasn't uninstalling correctly and the mods themselves were overwriting eachother, which I know will result in CTD.

I've learned a lot from you guys and gals here on the .Org.

I am running Vista and have RTW Gold out of the Eras box set, which has RTW & BI on one disk, but it's never downgraded.

And if all else fails and I don't find any kind of fix here,I'm still paying on my notebook at Rent-A-Center and can wipe the harddrive and tell them that it crashed and get a new one (deception: a tactic I learned in RTW).

Hopefully you made a backup copy of your RTW folder before trying anything.....
I can never figure out how to do that. It would be useful, not having to uninstall and reinstall all the time and just making a fresh copy of the file folder after any failed installations.

Once I solve this installation problem (or get a new machine, either one),I'm definitely gonna try both SPQR and Roma Surrectum again. I rather liked SPQR's units, especially those Spartan Hoplites...

That's simple. You just copy everything in the folder C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War (or your PC's version of that path) into one of your own naming such as C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War Copy

It takes some time to copy over but once you have it done then you can keep the original as vanilla (and a backup) and use the copy folder as a source for mods (or for one mod if you wish to install one that overwrites the game files such as Roma Surrectum).

Personally I would recommend only fully mod-foldered mods though, especially for beginners.

I might need a step by step tutorial on that.

erm... ctrl+c the files from the mod's data folder and ctrl+v in your copied data folder!

Is it okay to put the copy folder on the desktop? I'll play around, but I wouldn't know how to put it anywhere else.

Edit: I put it in the documents section. Is that sufficient?

Also, check out the TWC released mods Wiki page (http://www.twcenter.net/wiki/Released_Mods) for which mods are -mod self contained (green folders).

Amen to that, brother. I tried EB, but was turned off by the insanely long loading times.

Hey, I used to be a clueless as you about installing mods, but then I switched to Gieco and saved 15% on car insurance studied this comprehensive guide to installing EB, and am pretty much a pro at installing any mod ever since. You should check it out https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=80270:deal2:

Hopefully this will shed some light on the situation.:7teacher:
