We are losing a lot of greats this week, and few will be missed by me as much as probably the greatest actor of his generation (if not the twentieth century) Paul Scofield.
I was lucky enough to see his Salieri at the National and it was truly awe-inspiring as an anatomy of understated yet volcanic bitterness. I wish I had seen his Lear.
Paul Scofield (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/obituaries/paul-scofield-oscarwinning-actor-whose-phenomenal-range-was-unmatched-in-his-generation-798984.html).
Richard Burton said of him: "Of the ten greatest moments in the theatre, eight of them are Scofield's."
