To avoid excommunication pick your targets carefully. Attack, siege and then assault within the two year warning period. Ignore the Pope's warning and expect to be excommunicated. Remember: The Pope will always excommunicate larger factions when they attack smaller ones. So be aware that it may sometimes feel unjust that your aggressor has not been excommunicated but it is probably because he is smaller than you.

If you cannot avoid excommunication, prepare for it. Your provinces will become very unhappy during the excommunicated period, counter this be keeping a good spy and a decent garrison in every province.

You can attack Christians (as Christians), but you need to be prepared for the inevitable consequences. An excomm will cause problems, so you need to adjust your provincial happiness levels beforehand (lower taxes, increase garrisons, build happiness structures). Once your empire grows, don't use your king on any attacks, keep him safely within your territory, and keep an eye on his age (and looming death). Use your heir (as long as you have a spare) as a commander often, and beef up his stats in preparation of the succession.

I play the Danes a lot, excommunications are like breathing. ~D

happiness buildings?

The main ones are watchtowers/border forts, and religious buildings. There are probably others but I play so many different mods I'm not 100% sure which work in vanilla - I think the brothel and tavern lines aid happiness too :2thumbsup:

Just the brothel and not the tavern, strangely enough. Also only the first Town Watch building actually increases happiness, the upgrades have no effect at all.

I couldnt emphasize this enough. Use your emissary to bribe, send inquisitors and spy's into revolt then attack there last remaining provence. Ive actually got rid of france this way in 2 turns and they had 4 provinces.

The pope also only warns you for one faction at a time. That is, if you're not allowed to attack the Poles, you're free to attack any other catholic factions during that time frame.

This one and attacking within the 2 year period is easily able to keep you on the Pope's good side. I don't remember last time I got excommed. :beam:

As the English when dealing with the French it often appears that the Pope is 100% against you. And this is because he is. In early the English start out with 6 provinces (a relatively large faction) and the French start out with 5. This places the French as the underdogs from the start. The HRE always have a knack of ending up at war with the French, the latter might have started it, and usually do, but the Pope backs them because they're smaller than the HRE (15 or so provinces). This is why it is so common to see the HRE excommunicated - they are surrounded by smaller catholic neighbours and whoever they go to war with they're on a loser. Mid campaign the French usually get stronger and push the English and HRE back, then it's usually their turn for excommunication. The Papacy is basically a mechanism for controlling expanding factions and maintaining the balance of powers, it's not a perfect system but in some respects it works very well.

If you play the system you can win it, but if you strive against it, it can often result in disaster. Saying this when I play as a catholic faction I usually always go down the excommunication route so as to force a state of war and grab more territory. Crusading can make your neighbours very vulnerable. A well timed invasion into the enemy's chapter house province can spell doom for his crusade and his kingdom, any resulting civil war becoming fair pickings.

Brilliant, machiavellian even :2thumbsup: Why haven't I thought of that?

I confess I cheerfully use this exploit fairly regularly, particularly if I want to go after a faction that's been pissing me off. I just launch a quick attack against another Catholic faction I have no real interest in, withdraw my invasion force after receiving the Papal warning, and then rage against my *real* enemy to my heart's content. ~D I normally don't go for such cheesy tactics, but I feel justified in using this one, as it allows me to get around the problem of the Pope not wanting me to attack smaller factions that attacked me first.
