View Full Version : How do you determine your game configuration?

How did you determine to have a good, balanced and fair game? How did you determine the number of mafiosi, doctors,...?

I'm starting up a game on another forum, where it's the first time this game is played. I currently have 16 entrees and hopefully we'll get a few more.

How many mafiosi would you think would be best, and what other roles could I add. I want to have a few uniques (depending on how many more poeple will join), but I don't want things to get complicated. As most players are new to this game. What do you guys think?

EDIT: make it 18 players.
Joining deadline moved to this evening. I'm not a good waiter. ~;).

Maybe 2 mafiosos who have to kill the same person and a serial killer? Doesn't seem like enough for a doctor or a cop.

It'll vary depending on the numbers in the game.

If you're doing a traditional mafia, it generally runs about 1 mafioso/SK for each 7-8 entrants. GH's classic typically uses 3 mafiosi, 1 detective, rest town, regardless of numbers. The key is: mafia can coordinate, townies have preponderence of numbers but no real coordination.

My capo's are mafia wars so the numeration is different.

I go with 2 mafia, 2 kills per night, one detective, the rest town. Of course, this is usually with 30+ players. If you're hovering around 20, I suggest either knocking down the amount of kills per night (adding a mafioso to balance it out) or adding some more power town roles.

Too late. I just deleted the configuration I was going to use. As I don't want them to find out the secret roles.
Thanks though.

EDIT: also it became 19 players.

The Bus Driver role is a pretty cool role. He can choose two people to switch during the night. I used it in one of my mafia games (GH) and haven't seen it since.

And I made one successful switch during my short life in that game, and it completely backfired. :laugh4:

that is cool role. MAybe next time.

And patience? No, not in my dictionary!
When the game had ended I'll repost my configuration. As I did add a few unique roles. With one I've haven't seen in any maffia game yet.

I see your username is back to normal.

Now, about that avatar :brood:

I think 1 mafia for each 10-15 players and 1 kill/night for every 15-20 players. A serial killer who can kill only on even or uneven nights can balance things as well.

I have hosted frequently for a group of 10-15 players. When I got 13 or more, I did 2 mafia, 2 kills per night, 1 detective, and sometimes 1 immune and/or 1 doctor. That would allow for town to get three chances on the 1st succesful lynch. With less players, usually, a kill per night less, but a mafioso more.

Weird roles as a bus driver and intresting ones like those in Kami's recent game or in the capo games are difficult to balance. So is recruiting. The mafia setup GH brought to these forums is simple and easy to balance, and still good fun. :book:

Absolutely. I love adding in interesting roles, but it'll often take me weeks of mulling things over to provide an appropriate counterbalance within the role, or with some other role, or with a modification to existing roles. GH's are classic and I play them whenever time admits of it.
