Recently i had been taking a break from EB and for a little R&R from the classical world; i was riding down Orcs and reigning death upon Middle Earth with my beloved Rohirrim in FATW. :charge:

Anyhow, after taking a little break, i'm itching now for that KH campaign that i've never managed to complete. So i'm settin up my install with how i like to play EB when i remembered a mini-mod quite awhile back made by a very bright fellow who use to hang around here by the name of Oleo ( not sure if he's still active ) and inspired by Teleklos Archelaou. The mini mod added Spartan Mercenaries to EB.

Unfortunately, Oleo's download links do not appear to be active any longer. Not that it's of any account really because the unit itself was not contained in the download anyway. It was left in an older build of EB but was not referenced by code as explained by TA in the original thread i linked to. Well i really wanted this unit so i went on a mission so to speak with the aid of our friend Mr. Google. :lam:... I was able to locate the build that contained the unit i was looking for. After generating sprites and making unit cards for the unit (here's where Oleo's link would have come in handy as i could have just skip this step :yes:).......BTW, as for the unit cards; I realize they are not exactly of EB quality but i am not artistically inclined and consider myself fortunate when i'm able to draw a straight line. Anyhow...Spartan Mercs...

So two things.
1)Would something like this interest some of you in the form of a small mini-mod?
If so....
2) I would of course need leave i presume from the EB team to use one of their old units in a mini-mod. It would of course only be used as a mini-mod for EB and i would only post it here at the org, EB's home forum.

I don't have them in EB yet as i'm going to generate some sprites for them in a vanilla data folder but they'll be in there soon enough. Them dudes sure look sharp. My crappy pictures don't to these units justice.

Hmmm,Yeah, I forgot completely about the Korinthians. If you have UI and sprites for them I'd definately would be willing to add them in my EB too.

I just remembered that I have the korinthians in an old 0.6x version. If you want I can upload the ui and stuff.
Or do you have them already?

EDIT: nevermind. They apparantly had no UI back then. wierd.

Thanks for offering just the same, Moros. It happens I do have the UI files for the Corinthians as I got them from the .72 build I believe it was that I was able to track down. They had sprites as well but it seems they were using shared Roman Triarii sprites. So I took the liberty of generating new ones for them. IIRC, I'm not at my home PC so I can't double check but I believe the templates used for the UI files were different than the ones being used currently but they look fine just the same. What I didn't have were UI files and Sprites for the Spartan Agart model. So I made my own since I couldn't get a hold of the ones Oleo made way back when. Not of EB quality I would say, the UI files that is, but the sprites are fine.

I would definately be interested in a mod that included these units as mercs, however I wonder if it would be compatible with Minime's mod that I use to add Sabean units to a larger AOR (primarily a modified Desc_building file I believe). I also have heard a a rumor that the 1.1 build will have maxed out the unit limit, and that will come out soon. Thank you for your efforts!

Oh nice. Cause my 0.!x and 0.7X versions were deleted because of HD space. The 0.6 however will never go, as it reminds me of how far we've came. You'd can't believe the difference between 0.6x and 0.72. It's bigger than the difference between 0.72 and 1.0.

Now that is saying a lot. Because just last night I was going thru the old .72 files and comparing 1.0. The difference is astounding and difficult for me to describe with just mere words. It certainly has given me a whole new appreciation for the dedication and work that this mod team has put into Europa Barbarorum.

I'd definitely put Spartan Mercs in my EB lineup.
But that also means we'd have to fight them more often,too... :skull:
The Spartans in EB's timeframe were in their twilight,but still one of the most potent fighting forces in existance.

No, he's no longer active. He joined the EB team due to his great ability at spotting causes for CTDs. I seem to have exhausted my own ability at the rebellion CTD that still haunts us, so I certainly wish he'd return, but he left the forum entirely only a couple of days after joining, and hasn't read any PMs. I hope he's okay.

I hear ya pez. I've wanted that Korinthioi unit for a while now. Ever since I saw them in some old preview. I started playin EB back in .80 or .81 so I missed out on them. Luckily I managed to stumble on to them. I know some would say " Meh!, what's the point of having all these different hoplites in game taking up DMB space when you could just recruit a Classic Hoplite from Korinthos and that would make them Korinthioi Hoplitai." Well if your not a KH fan I could certainly understand that point of view. However, the KH is my favorite faction with the Maks a close second and I like to roleplay my KH campaigns so I add city specific hoplites to my game. In my little EB world anyway reflecting the fact that the KH is more of an alliance than an individual faction. So places like Athens, Rhodes, Korinthos and Krete all get their own city specific hoplites. Where as the classic hoplite becomes a unit just a notch lower in the pecking order so to speak than the city specific ones. As for an example of roleplaying, I'll have my Athenians and Rhodians protect and seize what is deemed as alliance interests east of Hellas. While my Spartans and Corinthians bring proper civil structure to anyone west of Hellas to include those barbarians who inhabit that piece of dirt that is shaped like a boot on the other side of the pond. :P
As for an install guide:
I'll package it up in .rar, zip or maybe an installer so no special instructions will be needed. Other than the standard unzip or point installer to the correct directory instructions. It's pretty much ready to go now, I just need to add the recruitment. It'll be a few days before it's all complete since unfortunately I'll be away from home base for a few days. Also I want to make sure that it's cool with the EB Team that I use these units in an unofficial capacity here on this forum. It's probably bad form on my part to mention that last part on the open forum rather than PM'ing someone on the team but I wasn't sure who to trouble with a PM about it. So if it has been considered bad form on my part by anyone on the team. My apologies. I posted this thread here on the main page rather than the unofficial mods section in the hopes someone on the team would see it and mention if it was ok or if there was a problem I didn't foresee.

Apparantly there was precedent for the hiring of Spartan Mercs. If you'll read the original thread I linked to in my first post, there was a debate on the team on whether to include this Merc unit in an older build. In the end they decided not to because of DMB considerations.

Merc unit recruitment doesn't get set in the EDB. However, I have been using minime's EDB file as a base for anything I add anyway, so no worries there mate.

In all likelihood you wouldn't have to fight against them too often and if you did fight a force that contained Spartan Mercs you would have the ability to bribe them. That last part presumes your playing as the KH. The provinces where they would be available will be limited in scope as I intend to keep in theme with EB's historical perspective. In other words if one happens to be playing as the Casse you won't have to worry about some Rebel General in Ireland going to the local pub and finding himself an army of Spartan Mercs and invading your island. :P

Shame about Oleo. That fella was a natural in terms of modding it seemed. At the expense of hijacking my own thread...What exactly is the nature of that rebellion CTD? I've seen it mentioned around the forums of course and I always pay attention to your fixes in the sense I install them when you put them out but to tell you the truth...believe it or not I've been playing EB since .80 or .81 and I have never experienced a CTD. Unless it was some code somewhere I happen to butcher myself that is. Granted, I must admit that I have yet to see a campaign all the way thru. So perhaps that is why I have never experienced it?

That said, as long as you call it an unofficial EB mod (as opposed to a standalone mod) I don't think we'd have any problems with you using old material. In fact, some of the units we're cutting in the future will stay in the code, only with disabled recruitment, in order to allow people to just reenable them when modding them back in in submods.

The rebellion CTD seems to have many facets. In its simplest form, the game will crash if a rebellion occurs where the faction it's rebelling to cannot recruit any units in the settlement in question. Vanilla RTW allows peasants to be recruited from the governor palace to circumvent this part. EB does similarly with the apeleutheroi, however we use a trick to disallow recruitment. In 0.8x, we added a low-end unit for each faction instead, causing practically all the AI turn CTDs to vanish. Unfortunately it wasn't dead, only a lot less frequent.

Makanyane cleared up a bit of fog, mentioning that the governor palace could be damaged in the riots or the revolt itself, thereby cancelling the effect of our apeleutheroi insurance. We now "allow" apeleutheroi recruitment from all non-destructible buildings as well, requiring the relevant fix except for in the internal version which already has it.

Unfortunately, there seems to be still more problems, and the game field building seems to be related, although I cannot understand why, and it only happens rarely. But in some cases, a city containing a game field rebelling will crash, while if you destroy it it works. Freaking voodoo.

BTW, no beta tester or EB member ever got a persistent CTD of unknown cause since 0.8x (at which point I was a beta tester and spent most of my time hunting one that I encountered, ultimately successfully), possibly because we make new internal versions more frequently than public ones. Therefore the campaigns don't get as far. Not to mention the time the testers spend on reporting the bugs encountered, discussing stuff on the forum and verifying that the bugs are squashed instead of playing nonstop. I know people have been somewhat jealous of the beta testers, but it's a duty in addition to being a privilege.
