Hey, all.

So, it's ~200 BC, Romani, the Carthaginians have been reduced to Tuat (that sandy hellhole WAY south of the Atlas Mts.), the Epirotes are no more, KH Macedon and Getai are rump states, Gaul is crumbilng.

In other words, all is well. I mean, the East is being choked by a gray blob, one which I'm going to need to confront eventually (I've terrible nightmares about it... j/k), but besides that all is well.

But I'm coming up on the Marian reforms. They're a ways off, I know (172 BC), but I'm preparing for it.

I have over 6 latifundia in Italy, but I don't know about these traits.

1. Is there any way to increase my chances of a S/C/V character becoming Consul? Maybe keep them in Rome?

2. What on earth is "Popularis" and how does one get it?

Couldn't find anything specific in the Traits and Ancillaries FAQ. :-\

To become a consul the family member needs 1 command star. Needs 5 or more influence to be even considered. Has to have been an Aedile. And it needs to be spring. It's always a twenty percent chance to get this. The data says something about age, but I don't exactly know what the trait TurnsAlive means. Usually people get the trait when the guy's at least 40 years old, usually when they're 50 though.

Popularis appears to be easier to get if one is a follower of Ceres and he builds temples of Ceres.
Also, popularis is three times easier to get for a Plebeian than a Patrician. (15% versus 5%, per turn I'm guessing)

To be taken with the standard wikipedia pinch of salt. A rich motherlode of factional politics and (cynically exploited) class conflict.

Thank you both. I remember Populares and Optimates now. Closest thing the Roman republic had to actual political parties, AFAIK.

Now, how does one become Aedile? I've gotten the trait before, but only as a pure accident, I've never actually tried to get it. I take it requires some influence and age?

It appears there's a number of turns before it's impossible for a character to become Aedile, but it seems to be a large range. Also needs to have more than two influence. Then there's a twenty chance of getting it every spring.
