A link (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/index.php) is always helpful. TWC has a extensive array of mods for every total war game. Simply scroll down to find the correct section.

My favorites:

If you like vanilla RTW but want better units and a bigger map, you can't go wrong with XGM, the Extended Greek Mod:

http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=127

If you want a much bigger scale map (more distance between cities) and some great new units, including 35 named legions, each with their own skin, Roma Surrectum is your mod:

http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=137604

For Roman campaigns with truly epic battles, SPQR has yet to be topped:

Oh, and how can I forget the ultimate Barbarian Invasion mod, IBFD:

Once you've tried any of these, you won't play vanilla again.

Do any of those require kingdoms
Those are all for Rome Total War.

For Medieval, I think the overall fan favorite (and I have to agree) is Stainless Steel:

5.1 is the latest release of Stainless Steel, and it's amazing. It does require Kingdoms. Note that a new release, 6.0, is due any day now...

RTR - Rome: Total Realism

The best RTW mod ever.

I've heard that Broken Crescent for M2:TW is excellent. I was going to buy M2:TW just so I could play BC but then I realized my computer probably wouldn't be good enough to run M2TW.

If you can handle the long load times then EB is unparalleled for R:TW. It's challenging, balanced, fun, and historically accurate. The mod team put in a tremendous effort.

Very long loading times, indeed, i think originally when i downloaded BC, it took around 3 hours, i had to uninstall it last night, as it wouldnt work, i was going to reinstall it, but the time went up to around 6 hours, and my download window kept not responding... Although i have never modded RTW, EB does sound excellent...
