Received quite a few complaints on the last poll. Seems that I made a mistake by not letting any Missile Cavalry on the poll, so here we go.

It's gotta be Cossacks! I remember well the movie Taras Bulba with Yule Brenner (you know the bald guy who starred in The King and I, who is even older than I am).

I voted Boyar Sons...

Other units are, well, more efficient, but to see the real succes you must also look at the other units a country has, and see how the missile cavalry fits.

In this case, Boyar Sons goes extremly well with the rest of the russian setup, imho.

Vardariotai. Fast, compound bows, fashionable headgear, curved swords.

The ultimate though would be Mounted Thunder Braves. Fast, long range, deadly muskets, AP axes, Apache and cool.

Turkomans: cheap as hell, fast like the devil, very reliable, everywhere retrainable, lots of stamina. They are still very useful in the late game.

Strzelcy. Cheap, get them from a Motte and Bailey, AP crossbows, AP axes, and will pwn anything.

Although I'm also becoming partial to Jinetes, playing as Spain right now.

Camel Gunners. No contest. People won't vote for them because not many play long enough to get to them.

I would put half a stack of camel gunners against any full stack in the game. And I would attack.

I think I like Boyar Sons the most, even though Polish Nobles are right there with Boyars.

There are several reasons for this, mostly due to their place in a Russian army.

1. They're heavy hitters with their armour piercing attack and javelins, worthy against cavalry and infantry.
2. They have can be used in a key function in almost any setup of Russian army:

A. In an all-missile cavalry as heavy hitters and chargers, taking out difficult targets (cheaper and easier to replace than most heavy cavalry)

B. In an infantry army as anti-cavalry and multipurpose roles (can kill generals and mob most cavalry units if nessessarily, and tie up cavalry for infantry charges), fast enough for many light cavalry roles, and again, pretty easily replaced. I usually have both Cossacks and Boyar Sons, and sometimes 1-2 units of expensive heavier cavalry (usually not needed, as musketeers and mass archers with axemen are so scary).

Dvor cavalry is effective, but expensive and not easily retrained in less developed areas. Cossack cavalry are bread-and-butter of archer cavalry armies, and can take on similar roles as Boyar Sons, but need a bit more building.

I like a mixture of different types in an all horse-archer army (mostly Russian and Turkish), something like 6 light/harassment (kazaks), 3 medium (Cossacks) and 3 striker type (Dvor or Boyar sons), plus the general and maybe some more strikers. Later on the game Kazaks need to be partially replaced by Cossacks for more oomph, and the army needs to be fattened up otherwise.

Polish Nobles (Awesome!), Strelzcy (Groovy!) and Lithuanian cavalry (Pointy!) are sometimes maybe a bit too much. Even late armies find it difficult to counter experienced Polish missile stacks.

Sorry for the overlong post!

I'm going for Sipahis.

Powerful, fast, and surprisingly tough in melee. Plus, trainable from cities and castles and cheap enough to train in huge numbers. They are the Persian Cavalry of M2TW.

Never quite got the hang of camel gunners, I couldn't ever train enough of them to be very useful. But I've been on the receiving end of dragoons, and that is not fun, so I guess they're pretty good.

Well Camel Gunners would obviously slaughter any unit, but I voted Strzelcy because I get them from Turn 1, not Turn 110-ish, by which point I'm spamming armies to streamroller everywhere anyway.

True, so true.

Still, I like Mamluk Archers. They're expensive, but you never have to replace any. Their arrows make mincemeat of lightly armored units, and their maces make them respectable melee units.

Hungarian Nobles are a very close second for me. Almost as good as Mamluk Archers and much cheaper.

ahahaha lol at the pics.

The thing w/ camel gunners for me is that they do seem to get in a bit too late to do much good for me. A unit that comes in from turn 1 and is that cheap to make gets extra cretit on my list.

Camel gunners really should have been made a bit more balanced in the game cuz when u do get them you cant possibly go wrong

strezcely are a fantastic unit, AP ranged and melee, available from start, and fairly unique if you look away from the standard monted x.bows for the catholics, which appear much later. Its also great being able to give hell to "born-in-the-saddle" steppe horse archers and shiny western knights alike, with a fairly modest, non-elite unit.
