You can do that now too.

Yes, you can merge units together, or you can reinsert a unit that is not at full capacity into the training queue and it will be rebuilt next turn, filling in the holes with fresh (green) troops.

You can do it either by drop and dragging depleted units into the empty boxes on the Unit Training page or you could combine two depleted units into one by picking one unit up with the mouse and dropping it on the other in the army display screen at the bottom of the page.
The problem is the AI almost never retrains depleted units, I've seen far too many AI army stacks with units sporting less than 10 low level units. It's rather funny to se, especially when the AI can train units in that province. As if those 7 peasants will turn the tide of battle!

Retraining units is very time consuming i never use it

I know you can't retrain/reequip your king's unit. As the Byz, I've been able to retrain/reequip the Kataphraktoi units of my heirs.
That's the best I can offer.

Apparently it's a bug, & will be fixed in the patch. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Should be fixed. In the meantime, I usually make sure that I build some extra ones while I still can to have a reserve for later.

That alone will make the patch worth getting. I'm sick of my top generals being marooned in units of outdated cavalry numbering about five guys.

2 things can make me rebuild units :
1)new armor & weaponry available for veteran units.
2)not enough money to maintain many new units, so the building time is not that important.

Slightly off topic but it annoys me that you can't move generals into newer/better units.
Having an army of peasants in your killer stack just because your best general originally came with them loses all realism for me.
You can give him fancy titles but his unit is still a liability on the battlefield that you just hope to hide and not gain bad V&V from not killing enough!
