View Full Version : MTW is the best game ever devised
.... and I dont care if anybody claims
otherwise.
I've been playing games since they only consisted of EBCDIC character maps on MVS systems, and no game has ever captivated me as much as this one has. None.
I've bought two copies of it just because I thought CA deserved more than 40 euros for it.
My wife dresses up as a medieval princess now to get my attention (nice bonus I'm sure you'll agree).
Bless you CA

I am sure, though, our unmarried friends shall lose lots of potential gfs (and maybe spouses) because of the effect of this game, not to mention the once-happy-now-wavering marriages...
Maybe CA could include a real medieval princess (but a washed one, unlike the original M.Ps) with the pack, for those unfortunate youngsters who lose one gf after another due to serious MTW addiction? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

There I see my father.
There I see my mother, my sisters and brothers.
There I see my line of ancestors back to the beginning.
They call on me and ask me to take my place with them in the halls of Valhalla where the brave may live forever.
It is an excellent game. It's just a shame it suffers from a ton of bugs and a lot of pretty useless units in multiplayer.
It's a very good game, but not the best game ever (of course, this is all IMHO)
The day a game is released that is better than The Settlers is the day I relinquish my aetheist beliefs and worship God! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif I'm fairly confident it will never happen, though.

The Settlers was a work of pure genius is is true.
We'll never see it's like again, I think.

Well.. the settlers IV is a good game (as is Cultures, I think it is called).
But they have moved away from the pure genius of Settlers (also called Serf City in some places).
Since the orginal would be impossible to find now, probably, Settlers IV would be your best bet.
BTW it is primarily a game of economics, not military combat.
I still have a copy of the original (and yes, the version I have *now* is called Serf City, but the original version I had was simply The Settlers)
You can find a complete (and no password protection system'd) version online if you look hard enough... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Hello,
Settlers? SETTLERS is your best game of all time? (Sound of retching in the background.) I had to review that series three times for CGW. Ugh ... Yetch ... Hurl ...
I will defend to my death your right to that opinion ... but, OMG! I just can't imagine ... Personally, I'd like to burn my copies, but I can't bring myself to look at them again.
Now, if you said EU1 or 2, or Empire, Starflight, Civ, even, Masters of Orion, Masters of Magic. SOME game of true quality ...
I am among the heathen, it would seem.
Just so you know, while I am serious about my opinion of the Settlers game, I am kidding in my response. Even though I now have serious reservations about your collective judgement.
Sorry, I couldn't resist posting a response. The horrible memories of having to play Settlers again and again were just too much.
Nuke it from orbit,
It's the only way to be sure,

V'ger, if you knew the very serious and real personal danger you are now in for making that remark, you would not be able to sleep at night!

Best game ever is a stretch. It is a damn fun and addicting game though. With some features to reduce the tedium of micromanagement in the SP game, it could be even better.

I simply love this game. MTW has skyrocketed to one of my top 5 all-time favorite computer games.
My biggest complaint is for want of a better AI opponent in the strategic game and in the tactical battles.
If I could only have one game on my PC, M:TW would be it, no question. Although I would miss IL-2 Sturmovik badly.

Ummm.. well I think MTW is not THE best game ever in this genre.. Which is pretty hard coz there is not much like this around.. I'm an old Shogun player.. and I still think it rocked for being fairly simple.. MTW has a lot of options, some of which are more usefull and fun than others..
I agree Settlers was pretty damn good too. My personal all time favorite remains Civ 1 though.. that game paved the way for many clones to come, but nothing could top it's sheer uniqueness...

Best game of all time? Its pretty good but not better than Fallout 2 or Deus Ex. But, I'd rank it up there with Close Comabt as one of my favs.

Fat an on TOP!
Hi,
I just wander, are all of you that so love ... Settlers (oooh the painful memories) from Europe? I ask because I've noticed over time that European tastes seem quite different from ours. Just as computer gamers tastes are different from consoles.
Getting back on topic, I will say M:TW is one of the best 5 games I've ever played. Only time will tell if it is the best. That is, how long my intense addiction lasts.
If CA remedies some or all of the problems we've talked of here (and their patch promises to fix a good deal of them) I may end up like that Korean guy; dead at my computer.
I don't remember any game in the last 25 years that has so addicted me and kept my interest.
Templars and Mamluks and Kataphraktoi,
Oh my,

Yes MTW is an awesome game, but I don't think it's as groundbreaking as STW was.
I don't play many games, but the few I do have really sucked me in. Lemme think of my top five:
1) STW
2) Championship Manager series
3) Elite 2: Frontier
4) Civilisation
5) Counter-Strike (although I don't play it much cos of crap ping)
Privateer 2: The Darkening should get an honourable mention. Anyone know of news of a space/ trader that can compare with this and Elite 2?

NinjaKilla, there has been a game two years or so ago, X: Beyond the frontier and X-tension as an expansion pack that was similar to Privateer, but fairly sub-par.

Yeah I've heard of those. They were released on Gold but are unavailable now. Is it worth trying to get hold of them? I think there are rumours of Elite 3 to be released soon, however I fear that it might be just as disppointing as some of the recent attempts in this genre.
