Open desrc_strat in the C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign folder and cut and paste all factions from unlockable to playable. It should look like this:

campaign imperial_campaign
playable
england
france
hre
spain
venice
sicily
milan
scotland
byzantium
russia
moors
turks
egypt
denmark
portugal
poland
hungary
end
unlockable

end
nonplayable
papal_states
aztecs
mongols
timurids
slave
end

You can also make the papal states playable

What happends if you play as the Papal States? Is it the same as SPQR in R:TW.

You can play the papal states??? Many people have told me that they are unplayable as they need much modification to them, and many of the exsisting modifications do not work. You could try it, im not sure what would happen if you did though, also, im sure that the timurids and mongols are possible to play arent they???

Also, what computer tpye have you got, if you have an XP it should work, but if you have a vista, you might need to turn the UAC off...

If you play as the papal states you will get bored to death. Everyone that attacks you is excommunicated, you will get free assassins aka inquisitors. Those inquisitors move during the AI turn and can be used during the players turn. They are excellent in killing unwanted guests like assassins, princesses, merchants etc.
