View Full Version : How to go to america
I've a question, ive played medieval 2: total war for some time but ive not managed to invade america, is it an event which lets u do this or do u have to just sail over with the best boat? any help would be appreciated.
ps: this is normal MOTW 2 no expansions.

Once you get the world is round you can train ocean going ships. With them you can cross the ocean and sail west. Once you reach the black area you will discover new land. The main area of Mexico is only accessible from the north. You will find there four Aztec cities filled with guys masquerading as chickens. Bring enough cavalry with you that will scare the living daylights out of them. :whip:

Keep in mind that guns arent always the answer, you will be duking it out in the jungles most of the time so id say that bringing your best infantry is something to seriousley consider. My knights ripped through their loinclothed bodies pretty quickly

Infantry?!
No, no, no, no. Bring cavalry. Light, heavy, medium... anything with a lance. Half a stack of cavalry with shields can wipe out the entire Aztec army. A full stack if they aren't carrying shields, as you'll suffer more losses. Hire the local mercs for your sieges if necessary.
You can consistently get 10 or 15-1 kill ratios with cavalry stacks against the Aztecs.

As others have said, keep going west in a boat after turn 160. You wont be able to build boats for the ocean crossing (you wont have the building available b4) until after *the world is round* event in that turn.
The new world is directly west of Ireland, the landmass is southern but the only way in is the north.
Theres no right or wrong way to go about it, but Id suggest capturing Misskukee
or the Carribean which are the 2 rebel settlements next to Mexico so that you can refit your army as they attack the Aztec. Or if you are wealthy and powerful perhaps you can afford to send unit multiple stacks in the first crossing. Theres also Fortaleza (brazil) which is a rebel settlement its south of the Mexico landmass, its kinda far off from anything but I like to take it all the same, plus only need 6 town militia or so to take out the rebel garrison there.
All Aztec cities and Fortaleza are EXTREMELY rich once developed due to the massive amounts of trade goods and their distance from your capital. Also if you happen to be a faction such as Portugal or Spain you can train Conquistadors from the new world cities after. You dont have to have a huge city for them either just regular city will do.
As for the armies Id suggest taking anything that the Aztec do not have be that guns cavalry or missle cav. Ive had the most success with the guns... but Im sure any combo will work .. alot of INF is NOT the way Id go about it tho since the Aztec have very good INF to begin with. My suggestion would be to take 2 stacks of good troops (your attacking army) across the ocean and 1 stack of militia for garrisons.
Enjoy the New World chocolates!!! mmmmmmmmmmmmm

Just don't expect much and you won't be disappointed.

Treasure and savages not campaign completion is what the americas are about.
If you enjoy seeing cavalry rip thru 3000 club wielding peasants or perhaps you wish to blast those same peasants with mass cannon or musket fire. :idea2:
Gold chocolate and tobacco are nice too.
I dont see why noone ever wants to go there... kinda like how it actually was though... once we start sending the pelts back everyone will come running.

Alexander conquered the "known world" in less time than it takes to sail to The New World. Bah! It was just marketing hype.

Does anyone have any pictures of the map once the new world is discovered? I've never had a campaign drag on that long I suppose.

Just type
toggle_fow
Into the console (Press ~ in-game) and then you can see the whole map. Scroll left until you see "America"

You were probably using the wrong kind of ships. What the "The World is Round" message allows you to do is train ships capable of traveling on ocean so you can actually visit the new world.
If you had 50 ships ready to go when the message hit, they were probably the wrong kind of ships. Sorry to break it to you, but you'll have to train a new navy. Check your recruitment options for a new ship variety (If you don't know which train it is, I believe it tells you in the description that the ship is capable of going on the ocean.)
Good luck and happy hunting!

You need Carracks I think to get there. Anything below that will not get you there. If you can't wait 20 or 30 years, board a plane to any location on the American continent.

To sum up:
1. Build your ports up as high as you can.
2. Wait until you get the "World is Round" message, about turn 160 or 170 (in the unmodded game I think it arrives about the year 1400).
3. At at least one of your ports, build the new upgrade that is available, Naval Drydock.
4. Once that is built, you can build Carracks. ONLY Carracks can make it to the New World; if the stack of ships includes any other kind of boat, they can't go.
5. Load on stacks of armies (cavalry is pretty devastating, as usual, against them).
6. Sail west (very, very slowly--it takes about 8 turns to cross the Atlantic as I recall, depending on where you land).
7. PROFIT!:smash::smash::smash:

The Aztecs have 3 or 4 (Can't remember specifics) settlements, and they are more trouble than they are worth. Brazil has only one settlement (Owned by the rebels, no less) and has all the resources that the Aztecs do.
Cuba and North America and ugly and have little to trade.
After the world is round, I usually ends up ignoring america, too much war on the old world front...
America in regular M2TW is very un-impressing. The Americas campaign in Kingdoms is good though.
You can also use the Caravel from Spain and Portugal. Not many know this but they are also ocean faring ships.
