If you use your King as a leading general early in your campaign, and build up some good V&V, will this increase the chances that his sons may at least start with some decent V&V's? I usually don't use my king in this way, even early in the campaign, and never far from the homelands to prevent rebellions. I'm just curious to know if your king's sons starting V&V's are totally random or if the actions of your king, and the developement of some positive V&V's, can help improve his heirs. I've been getting some real schmucks as heirs lately. Does the apple really never fall far from the tree?

I think it does work like that - I played one game where my king was an excellent general and all his heirs were, but now I'm the HRE and the entire royal line is useless: drunkards, cowards, perverts, you name the vice, they've got it, and every new heir too. Maybe I've just been unlucky.

In MTW as in real life... no. The Nature Argument is back and here to stay baby!

Starting V&V is random. I have had some princes start with coward-line vices, before they have even been in battle.

This is annoying to me. I also wish there was some way to 'pay off' vices. If I have a coward who goes on to win lots of battles, he should no longer be regarded as a coward.

Basically, a good general can go bad (through forced retreats) but a bad general cannot become good. He will always have those negatives.

I wonder about the whether Princesses factor into this as well? I've noticed the Byz and Spanish tend to start with killer monarchs and heirs; would courting their Princesses bring their good genes into the family, I wonder?

I think there is some relevance in king's stats and V&Vs as far as the stats/V&Vs of the heirs go, but of course, there is some freedom around it as well. I seem to have whole lines of tortured/traumatized heirs, and, since it's not that common for leaders to get those vices in the first place, it seems to happen far too often for it to be just a coincidence. And I think the davs said that marrying a foregin princess doesn't have an effect on your heirs, only that the new king will come with a "supply" of maturing heirs of his own.
