View Full Version : Repeatable bug when taking a city

Sieging Carthage as the Romans, they attack me with an insufficient force and not only lose but lose enough to lose the city. When prompted with the take / disperse / enslave screen after taking the city - clicking Enslave (button on the bottom) makes the game CTD.
Have tried this 3 times with the same results each time. I have not tried it without scripts nor have I tried choosing something other than cleaning house (the general in charge won't be able to control a populated city though I could try dispersement.)
3rd try I ran with "show errors" checked with no visible difference (IE - no notification of the error and I didn't see a file generated after searching the directory for files generated today.)
Will try pop disbursement next then without scrips and will keep you posted.
sounds like it could be a trait problem...

Pop disbursement - same result. Will try without scripts once then have to abandon this till later (RL intruding.)
Edit: Same CTD without scripts running. Let me know if you want the file or need anything else from me for testing purposes if interested.
Save file link: Activate the script, hit end turn and run the fight (it's relatively small / short.) Providing you win killing their general and inflicting enough losses you'll own the city (5 straight times - no trouble and I figure I'm only an average or just a bit above on the tactical map.)

Version 1.1, no unofficial mods.
Oh btw - Hard battles and the general isn't Patton. They have quite a bit of cavalry so recklessness might get your whole army to rout even though you outnumber them by nearly 2-1.
Have you saved right before the battle? If so, go back to an earlier save or withdraw from the combat. If not, end the siege and start it over next turn.

That's where the save is. Will try your suggestion.

Tried 2 things:
Added the trait fix and tried it - same result (figured it was worth a shot and didn't take much time.)
Pulled the troops back a turn then resieged. Made for a much tougher follow up fight since they were able to add 2 elite infantry to the mix as well as some other units. Unfortunately didn't win the city outright so even though a couple turns later I was able to successfully assault without a CTD it's not really a replication of the situation.
Ah well, all's well that ends with the ability to enslave more barbarians :).
Thanks for the suggestion Bovi :)
I'm more and more of the opinion that this is a bug caused by saving right before battles involving a potential city takeover.

Possibly - but how, then, do you avoid it as it was in this situation - autosave prior to their attacking me and the decicive victory gaining the city :/.
I don't remember a way to turn off autosaves but I don't think I would even given that situation as autosave has saved my bacon from the rare end turn failures.
You always have the opportunity to lose the fight or withdraw prior to it.

No argument and I'll do that where this happens. Thing is - in the past when something like this has happened a simple reload of the game and rerun of the fight would make the error not occur. The fact that this one CTD'd 6 times in a row was unusual and worth a post.
Thanks again for the workaround. Running without a hitch now.
Actually I've never seen it not repeat (then again, we specifically ask people not to upload non-persistent crashes :sweatdrop:). And every time the problem is gone by loading a save from the turn before, or postponing the capture until the next turn.
It may be worthwhile testing this with an empty trait file, eh?

Describe what to do and I'll test it (have never modded / fiddled with the files personally.)
Try this EDCT (ftp://europabarbarorum.com/nerfed_edct.zip) out. Take a backup of export_descr_character_traits.txt and unpack it into <RTW>/eb/data, then run and see if it works. Restore the backup when done.

Well, put me down as a n00b. Took the autosave from the RTW folder not realizing that those saves are different than the RTW/EB folder :(. Since it was autosaved and uploaded (I thought) I didn't make a special save elsewhere. Ah well - will keep the file if it happens again (which, of course, Murphy will make sure doesn't happen.)
