When i try to use the validate install it says it works, but the new file will not work. Next when i try to play single player, the rome total war welcome screen starts, and then the screen just goes black. (I am running vista)

Try using the turn off movies option in your configuations. If you didn't install the trivial script, just add -nm to the end of the target of your shortcut.

what will that do? and what location did u download the game from?

It'll turn off the movies, which might be the problem in your case. Just try it.

I used the torrent to download my working version.
