View Full Version : Can't start campaign. Details inside.
Hey fellow EB-players.
I've encountered a really annoying problem. Namely, I cant start a campaign. Everytime I try to start a campaign the game loads for a split-second and then it throws me back to the Single-Player menu where I choose Campaign/Custom Battle etc. All atempts to start a campaign has been fruitless. The strange thing is that I can start a custom battle perfectly.
Now, to give you information that might prove usefull I've modded my version of EB with TWFanatics (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=94341) mod (Only the phalanx one, not the Aquilifer). I've also changed the Casse generals bodyguard to be Rycalawre instead of Chariots. I've also disabled the Large and Epic stonewall beacuse I think they are unrealisticly huge.
Apart from that my EB version is completely original. Running the validateinstall program is also fruitless as it only produces an empty document in the EB folder.
Now, EB is such an wonderful game, and I'm starting to feel the side-effects of not getting my dose of it. So please, pretty please with sugar on top, help me! :help:
I think I've seen your exact position before, but I don't exactly remember what fixed it.
Have you tried deleting your map.rwm yet?
Thanks for the reply. Haven't tried that one out yet, will do right away.
Stay tuned for results!
Tried to remove the map.rwm and it didn't work. Should I remove it from both the SP Game EDU Backup and the \world\maps\base?
Just the one in the base folder I would think.

The SP Game EDU Backup ovrewrites the base one everytime you play singleplayer though. But if you delete both and it works you'll have to copy the new one into the backup folder.
Since nothing seems to work I'll try a complete reinstall, RTW and everything. I will keep you informed with results. Hopefully the problem will disappear. Thank you all for your help so far :)
Tried to reinstall and it didn't work. Custom battles works fine but everytime I try to start a campaign the game seems to be loading only to throw me back at the singleplayer screen. Tried deleting the map.rwm once more. Would really appreciate help :(.
Shameless bump, read above. (Correct me if I'm wrong, but when editing a post, does it count as a new post? As to notify others that the thread has recieved a new post? Else I will stop editing and just post new posts. No ill will or spamming involved here)

I had this issue when trying to run EB with the Alexander .exe. It was solved by using the -noalexander command line switch. If you are using Alexander, that might be the issue - if not, I have no idea.
Thank you for the reply ElectricEel but I'm running EB on a clean RTW 1.5 install. There should be no problems with BI/Alex. whatsoever. Hopefully someone will know what to do! Else I'll be a sad sad camper

Have you tried to run the validation tool (the bat file in your RTW directory) yet?
Did you download EB from the torrent; or did you use an FTP style link? In case of the latter, I suggest you redownload - better yet if you happen to have torrent client software (available for free on the net) you can download the torrent file, and do the following:
-place your possibly corrupted EB installer in the directory your torrent client software uses for storing downloads;
-'run' the torrent file with your client software.
It should then check if every section of the file matches the released installer's counterpart; and if not it should redownload that bit of the file.
I used the torrent file for downloading 1.1 and did as you said, Tellos Athenaios. It wasn't missing anything though (The .exe file) so my .exe file should be completely healthy.
About the validation tool, all it does is create a black window full of white text telling me that the validation could take a couple of mins, followed by a "Validation is complete *yiddi yadda* ...press any button to continue..." (Don't really know the real term for it, so I'll just referr to it as "Black Window", bear with me). When pressing the "Enter" button, for simplicity, it tells me that there is no document called "ebValidationResults" and asks me if I'd like to create one. I press "yes" and am greeted with an empty text document leaving me no clues at all as to what might be wrong.
As I mentioned in my first post I've modified some files, nothing big, to create a, for me, more enjoyable EB experience. Could this be the source of the problems perhaps?

It could very well be the cause of your problem. Yeah, I know it sucks but you should really try to undo your changes, and then see if the 'regular' EB works.
Tried editing the descr_unit file and changed it so that the Casse general is the same old chariot unit it once was, and it worked! :smash:
Though I'm not happy with it. I'd love to see the Casse general as a Rycalawre. Very well, they probably wont bother me in my AS campaign anyway :juggle2: .
Off to the "EB Unofficial Modding Projects" for further questions then! :idea2:
If there is no such file after the validation, there are two things that may have happened:
* The validation failed. Check the "black window" for any error messages.
* You installed EB under "Program files". You were warned not to.
Even though the situation solved itself this time it would be good the get the ebValidateInstall to work properly. You mentioned something about program files, Bovi? I'm not sure if I have done this or not, but to my knowledge, I haven't. EB is installed to D:\Spel\Activision\Rome - Total War, on my computer. Unless I'm missing something, thats not program files, no?
So then it's the first bullet and not the second. What is the output of the validation in the "black window"?
Sorry for the delayed reply Bovi, busy doing RL stuff. I'm sure you're considerate :sweatdrop:
I'll quote the exact words that are shown to me in the "black window":
"Running validation. Could take a couple of minutes, please be patient.
Java är inte ett internt kommando, externt kommando, program eller kommandofil (Swedish, English translation = Java is not an internal command, external command, program or command-file).
Validation is complete. There should now be a file called "ebValidationResults.txt" in this directory. However, if you're running Vista and have installed RTW/EB under PROGRAM FILES, it probably won't.
In fact, if so you're very likely to run into trouble later beacuse of the placement. Make sure you have installed EB/RTW anywhere else.
Tryck på en valfri tangent för att fortsätta... (Swedish, English translation = Press a random key to continue...).
That is all that the "black box" really tells me. When pressing a random key (In my case, Enter. For simplicity) it tells me that there exists no such document as "ebValidationResults" and asks me if I'd like to create a new one. When choosing yes all it does is produce an empty document. :embarassed:
Would be gratefull for answers since I've run into a new problem. Encountering CTD's when fighting custom battles in MP (Against AI, but only want to use "factional" troops :) ). The weird thing is tough, that it seems to only crash when using certain units. :help:

You need to install Java from http://java.sun.com.
Ah, thank you very much Bovi. Will do right away.
By the way, wich Java is it that I need?:dizzy2:
Actually, I was more thinking about the different "Java SE, Java EE, Java ME" etc? Wich one is it that I need, or do I need all of them?:dizzy2:

You will want this one: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6
(Or above.)
