So I was able to send in an army as the KH and liberate Massalia from the Roman overlords. Problem was I had no FM anywhere close by, so I immediately put in a type 4 gov. Eventually, the dirty Romans returned a couple of years later and siege my new city so I went into battle. Needless to say I was shocked to discover that my client ruler was not a proper Greek general but a barbarian lesser king.
I know that Massalia had both Celt and Greek population at this time, so why not allow a Greek to rule instead of barbarian. It just seems the natural choice. Or is this really a clever Greek general that has just “gone native” in his fighting style? I understand the choice would make sense for barbarian faction in the area to support one of their own but just doesn't seem realistic to me that KH would go out of their way to support natives when they have their own kind to work with.
I just wondered why the EB team made the choice it did, is there some historical information like the Greek population being decimated or a historical precedent of Celtic leader of Massalia at this time. Don’t get me wrong I’m not nagging; I appreciate the hard work put into releasing 1.1 and all its goodies, but I would like to understand a little bit more about this anomaly.

I guess that that "celtic" general still had a greek looking portrait - and that only his bodyguards were celtic - So you should role play it - like he is a greek governor who choosed to accompany himself with celtic bodyguars for his own safety. (and to avoid the danger of being overthrown by some fellow over ambitious Massalian greek citizen)

Some greek cities allowed non-greeks to basically be in charge of military matters "protecting" them. I'm thinking mainly of evidence from the Black Sea cities where minor Getic kings would have been in charge in many ways, or of cities further north along the coast there.

Well, many great generals (Hannibal, Ceasar) have used "barbarians" as bodyguards becasue of their great skill in battle and immense loyalty, as long as you pay them that is. At least they won´t betray you just because of some petty political dispute like greek soldiers might. Anyway, Massilia had their own goverment, ruled by a kinda senate, so I like to think that I keep this senate when I take Massilia as the KH (or Roma for that matter, if I install a L4 Gov) but appoints a military commander that might work a bit as headman of the city, but he certainly doesn´t govern it all by himself.

Okay thanks for your replies. I will for now roleplay the situation as it is. However if I went into the script and changed the bodyguard type for future games would there be any serious gameplay issues? Also while the settlements on the black sea are an interesting parallel I guess I was looking for specific information for cletic client rulers of Massalia with Greek or even Roman control durring this the time period of EB or slightly before it.

No I don´t think that Massilia was ever ruled by a Celt. I don´t have the book were I read it right here, but I believe they some sort of Senate or "Elders" who elected a couple of higher officials or something. You could always look it up on Wiki, though be careful with what you believe. Massilia didn´t actually lose it´s indepence until I think 46 BC when Ceasar took it as it had decided to support Pompey, up till then it had been an independent city within the ever growing Roman Empire. After that I think it got some appointed Roman official to govern it.
