Hi, I just bought my M2TW. I'm interested to play this "hotseat" thing. I am new to "hotseat" so I might need some guidance along the way. My M2TW version is defualt 1.03. How do I go about playing "hotseat" ?

Hi Andy,

"hotseat" campaigns are played very similarily to single-player campagins.

A host will set up the game and decide on rules etc. The first player will play his turn, then save the game, and pass it on to the next player in turn. And so on, and so forth.

A lot of the fun also comes from engaging in diplomacy in the forum, or via pms, or just shouting general insults at one anther (always in-character and within reason, mind).

Your main problem will be that most hotseats are focused on the smaller kingdoms campaign, because those dont require as many players. There are two "grand campaign" hotseats going on currently, which wont require the kingdoms expansion, but as far as i know, both of those are full currently.

Greetings, lords and ladies;

The Dark Lord Askthepizzaguy is seeking challengers for One-Versus-One "duel to the death" Long Campaign hotseats.

I've already accepted challenges from Monk, Ichigo, Elite Ferret, Ignoramus, and Grog. However, I finish the turns so quickly that I still have time on my hands waiting for more save files.

I've managed to defeat two so far, and in the rematches and still-active matches I am in very good positions. But if it's not facing me that you fancy, sign up here to challenge others. There is supposed to be a league or tournament between Duelists, but thusfar I'm the most active, and I only know of one duel that doesn't involve me.

If you feel like tackling the AI in a race to conquer the world against a human opponent, or you just want a slow PvP game, then duelling is for you.

Versions I can play:

Vanilla 1.0, 1.3
Broken Crescent Mod 1.5 (with hotfixes)
Lands to Conquer 3.1
Stainless Steel 4.1

I can also host the game so you don't have to edit the files, if you like. Though I don't mind playing a game hosted by someone else.

Because there are only two human players, turns go much quicker (typically) over full hotseat games, and because there are only two players, the strict rules typically found in hotseats no longer apply. There is no 24-48 hour deadline to complete your turns, and being active in a duel takes up so little of your time, because you can play at your leisure.

In order to keep the save files from clogging up the Org's server, it is recommended that sendspace hosts the files or that you play by email (your actual email). Also it's good manners not to clog up other player's PM boxes. Please have a valid email account that you check regularly.

You don't have to have any experience with hotseats or duels to participate. I'd be glad to show any newcomers how it works. I'm on here more than most, so if you have any further questions contact me at askthepizzaguy@yahoo.com.

many mods are full mods which stand alone in a seperate folder. Some are patches which affect Vanilla.

BC, LTC, SS, and others are full mods. I'm not sure which ones act like patches, but find out b4 you download.

I've played the Britannia Campaign, an SS and a couple of BC campaigns via TWC and would be interested in finding a game via the org. I've noticed some pretty interesting games over here with strong diplomacy via the forums and some very interesting in character updates. I'll be keeping my eye out for a game or two with this in mind :) I'm a player who likes to fight to the bitter end so there's no chance of me dropping out mid game.

I have recently acquired a copy of Medieval 2, 1.000 version, as well as a separate copy of Kingdoms.

I need to patch M2tw to 1.3,
Install Kingdoms,
Install the 1.5 patch,

And then I should be ready to play hotseats again.

I'd also like to install VanillaMod, Stainless Steel, Broken Crescent, and perhaps other versions if they are good.

I'm looking for a replacement for our Campaign Dual Alliances: Double Jeopardy.

For those of you who don't know the concept of the campaign, it's a Stainless steel 6.3 campaign where the settings are for the AI are on the Hardest settings.

This makes capturing rebel settlements extremely difficult...
However, what stands out about this campaign is that instead of controlling one single kingdom, you control two back to back.
As a result, every kingdom in the campaign is controlled by a human player.
We are currently in our 7th turn...
Some players have already seen their 2 kingdoms reduced to one, as Leon and Scotland have been destroyed.

At any rate we are currently looking a Replacement for the Kingdoms of Crusaders and Venice. .
One player will inherit both these Kingdoms:
The political situation of these kingdoms are mixed, To be honest the Crusaders are on their last breath, and will almost certainly be destroyed this turn.
However, Venice is doing particularly well, is not in any wars and is continuing to expand.

We are set on having a never ending series of gams in the Britannia, Teutonics and Crusades expansions from M2TW:Kingdoms. Britannia should end in 10 or so turns if nothing too weird happens, the Teutnoics game just started and is a long way off and the Crusades game still has an epic clash to resolve between factions with about 25 provinces each.

We really have several openings in Stainless Steel 6.4 games and if you've never played the mod, you should definitely give it a try, trust me on this one. I'm a gamer who for long years abjured anything that wasn't made by the original developer team and I hated mods and fan missions, until I understood that the developers can never put in as much time on a project as the fans can. SS has a longer (and still ongoing) development cycle than M2TW and it fixes so many annoying things from vanilla (low movement rate, inaccurate map, stupid AI etc.) and adds so many more (extensive traits system, historical accuracy, lots more factions, great and diverse unit rosters etc.) that it is a sacrilege for you not to give it a try.

Start a SP campaign in SS and if you are still unsure I could help you out with pointers or even est up a small "tutorial" hotseat deathmatch between me and yourself where I'd give you pointers and reviews on each turn as we play it.

Hi buddy - welcome to the Org and to the Throne Room!

You are indeed posting in the right area and thanks for stopping by and expressing your interest in a game.

What we have found is that the grand campaign in vanilla M2TW is not the best setup for hotseat games, largely because of the slow movement rate and large number of rebel territories which makes it long-winded to wage war on each other.

Recently we have tended to play hotseats in mods like Stainless Steel (where the movement rate is greater) and also to use the hotseat function to move the game along automatically to a later date so that the starting position is more developed with more units available.

You'll see that the two grand campaign hotseats we currently have running (Wrath of the Khan 2 and March of Time) both have used this approach.

Also, most players are in multiple games at once and these games tend to take a long time to run their course - hence starting new games is relatively infrequent unless we get a big influx of new players at the same time.

This is why others have encouraged you to join one of our existing games in the meantime while you wait for a new game to be started.

It'd be great if you would consider doing this - there are some great games going which are in their early stages (i think both of those I mentioned are only in the single digits in terms of the number of turns played) and some vacant factions which are in good positions.

Of course if you do get enough interest in a new game it would be great if you would consider hosting it here.

Otherwise I will certainly let you know when a new game starts - the most likely is for a new game in the Kingdoms campaigns which you can see we are running one each of (except Americas).

Anyway, great to see you here and I hope you find a space in a game that interests you!

I will do my best to see if any one bites at a new grand campaign, but i will give SS a run through and get a feel for the speed of play and new features, if i feel i am up to playing hotseat with SS what factions are open, in Wrath of the Khan 2 and March of Time? and are they open due to getting "poorly managed" by the players that have dropped out?
my perfered factions are russia or the turks BTW (odd i know but i just seem to do well with them in early game)

In March of Time the Khwarezm Shah is open and is in a strong position after havin been controlled by an excellent player who had to leave the game due to RL time constraints. The Shah is a Turkic nation that you will find similar to the vanilla Turks.

Do you want the Moors? They are yours if so. The courtroom is quiet in that game because everyone is talking behidn the scenes in a group they set up (just like in WotK1) - but you are right that there is less IC interaction here these days. Why not help me revive it?

Hey, I was there until you killed me. If you really wanted to keep the courtroom alive you should have let me live :)

In general though, I would love to see more courtroom action. i enjoy it a lot myself but have a hard time participating unless at least a few others are as well. Point being though, if you guys get some stuff going, I would gladely throw in my faction's two cents.

As for my RPG, there is actually even more RP going no than is apparent because there has also been a fair amount of RP going on with other factions through PM's to me.

Yeah, Were getting a KGCM hotseat game up on TWH(Where I'm from, and your new partner site :D ).

The hotseat patch is obsolete, but luckily, it's been incorperated into the new patch for the mod, and that includes the ar improvement/balance. From what I've seen lead battles are very rare in hotseats. I like that I can get more/better traits from doing the battle, catch more prisoners, and kill the enemy general. I know how to make really tough ar builds in retrofit(original ar) though. I tried doing research on how ar takes everything into account, but it seems not much is known, but they're theories. I'm fine with either though, and thanks for the welcome.

Check out my guide that's stickied here, I've posted what I know of regular M2TW AR as well as the modified Stainless Steel AR. Basically AR cares about troop numbers, armour, health. In M2TW or Kingdoms, having a stack of 150 men per unit, 20 armour spearmen will basically make you a force to be reckoned with.

AR also greatly advantages strong generals and it cares about Night Fighter when it's used (even against a single army).

My main problem with KGCM is that phonicsmonkey said that the factions have been imbalanced when they tried to equalize everyone. Some start with catapults right off the bat, and for example the HRE is a major target that loses in the first few turns, while in say, Stainless Steel, the HRE is a force to be reckoned with.

Yep, that's pretty much what I know about ar, infact, I think I read that guide before. Unfortunately, I don't think more can be known, I'm really curious if AP(Armour-Piercing), terrain, and speed are taken into account.

From what I've seen KGCM is still really balanced, haven't played all the factions though. I haven't gotten into SS, So my knowledge is limited in that.

AP is definitely taken into account. That's why some 13 armour Axemen give clear victories versus 21 defence spearmen in equal number. But armour is still better than AP (though if you have high-armour AP units then you get both) because it protects your troops from casualties and AP diminishes in value when fighting low quality armies (not much armour to halve). There was a discussion on the Teutonics campaign in the guide thread, you can read that. I'm also glad you had found my guide prior to registering :laugh4:

Ahh, good to know, I've been really wondering, I wonder if that counts for AP sidearms too, like cav with lances and a mace as a secondary. Still, even more a reason to like shields(which are not effected by AP if I am correct).

Thats strange, I could have sworn i did reply to you. I must have written the message then got distracted before I actually hit reply or something like that. In any case, I don't really have a preference between lead and autoresolve. I think they make for very different games and I enjoy the variety. I know that some people like silvershield have a strong preference for lead battles though.

As far as starting a new game, do you have any ideas for specific variations or mods?

We already have one vanilla game in place. BC could work, the last save got corrupted by a member who hadn't installed correctly I think.

We can limit our SS game to eastern factions only and no expansion past a certain border.

Can we choose Mongols in SS hotseat? Little bit OP for start, but, european soldiers far better in late game. Byzantine soldiers too OP too but Cumans simply have nothing. SS isn't a balanced mod.

You can't pick em as an early faction in SS so that would be a no. Unless we play late ofcourse. Can we simply incorporate the entire map to spread players out a bit more? Or do you veteran hotseat'ers seek a different challenge?
Adding an imaginary boundary through the map does add some unbalancing. As Lithuania you can only expand into the maw of Novgorod and no scandinavia for example, whilst being barraged by catholic western europe without the possibility of retaliation. Just to give an example.

Or everyone chooses a faction, massas their starting forces and teleports to a random x,y coordinate to start anew. The coordinates could be determined on forum to prevent cheating. Could make for an interesting game. I've rp'd Principality of Antioch with the Scots in this manner. Swung the Teutons all over the map aswell :)

OK so if SS is unbalanced to you then I'm open for suggestions for other mods. I know SilverShield likes Crescent Moon. We can get a game going on that, though it is similarly imbalanced IMO.

Well, actually, I've been playing singleplayer with the Jirza, Dhimmis, and Kafirs submod. It adds a lot of flavour to BC, including the division of Islam between the Shia, Sunni, and Ibadi, Jirza tax on non-muslims, and even the Jewish and Zoroastrian minority faiths(neither are playable though) that can be interacted with. I think it would be even more interesting if we could get a hotseat going with this and I believe it makes BC more balanced too. I'm not entirely sure about doing something out of the ordinary, but getting a large amount of players would be nice. I'd like to see a lot of diplomacy and intrigue, so I'd rather not have teams.

I'm new here, and I'm interested in trying hotseat games. I find the diplomacy and intrigue between actual human player to be very interesting and want to give it a try. (I also what to sack Rome as the Scots again.. but that will probably come later)

I have M2TW with the Kingdoms Expansion, but no other mods besides a very simply adjustment to Vanilla to "add" Hotseat for the grand campaign. I did test it and it does work, so my game was not broken by this little endeavor.

Sorry on the slow reply, life is very hectic for me right now. I would be happy to do either of those campaigns.

As for the mods, the main one we use is Stainless Steel which you can find at http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=314

Stainless Steel definitely makes for a slower game though, and the kingdoms campaigns are probably better for smaller amounts of players.

As far as hotseating goes, playing vanilla is a vastly different experience from Stainless Steel, mainly because SS really rebalanced the autoresolve mechanic. In vanilla (or Britannia, Crusades etc.) heavy infantry trounces everything else. In SS, archers and cavalry have a much greater impact on autoresolve results.

I've won all 3 games I've played in Britannia, all of them wtih an ally. It comes down to this: someone makes a pact with England and they steamroll the rest. At the end, England and their ally win, or if the English player doesn't want to share, he can overwhelm his former ally because England is so blatantly more powerful than the other factions.

The only way I can see it becoming interesting is if Wales takes over the English infrastructure, then they can become strong with upgraded merryonid spears.

The Crusades campaign has two Catholic factions with great infantry, the ERE which also has decent infantry, and Egypt and the Turks who are lacking in that department. Crusades in lead battles is much different though, as then the horse archer factions at least have a chance.

The Teutonic campaign is reallty interesting for MP, but the Teutonic Order is much more powerful than the other factions due to its starting armies, position and the ability to recruit 21 armour Order Spearmen from tier 2 castles.

I think giving the crusades hotseat another go could be a lot of fun. Do you know if you would prefer battles to be led or auto-resolved Theris? Allowing them to be led tends to turn the game into a battle of forts and just making absolutely sure that you always get to be the attacker, since it is so easy to beat the ai in led battles. Auto-resolve tends to create a lot more possibility for surviving a defensive battle, but is also somewhat exploitable in terms of knowing what the system favors in terms of recruitment.

I would have to say led battles sound better, even if it can turn into a war of forts, though from what I remember in Crusades forts tend to be very expensive at 2500 per fort. Also, I downloaded Stainless Steel a few weeks ago and WOW, that is an incredible mod.

Forts are indeed expensive in Crusades, and you can't just plop them down wherever you please in the desert. We can make a maximum fort rule to balance this out. Say, you get 1 fort per province and only the King and his Heir can build them?

That sounds more than fair, and makes fort placement and garrison a lot more tactical in the long run.

Also, how does a clean Diplomacy sheet sound? No starting Alliances, and no starting Enemies?
