So lets hear them. What are some of the favorite rules you like to invoke on yourself when playing EB in an attempt to either make it more realistic to you or more of a challenge.

Here are two rules I have tried on ocassion and am thinking about for an entire campaign.

1. Generals lead, Captains just panic and charge into battle - Only personally run a battle if you have a general in the force. If your forces are lead by a Captain then you must autoresolve.

2. Generals command or fight but not both - This is a little rougher I think. IF your general is in direct combat then you cannot click on other units and give them new orders until you command your general out of melee. If you have more then one general then as long as any one of them is unengaged then you can command all your forces.

What do you like using?

In principle, not exploiting the gameplay to achieve an unrealistic result. For instance, laying siege to a wooden walled settlement with 3 cav units, routing the enemy cav back through the gate, killing them and running around the walls to capture the other gates thereby locking the enemy out of their own city.

The result? I capture the settlement and the enemy force - often thousands strong - vanishes. I won't do it (anymore!) as it would seem that the enemy would simply counter-siege my depleted cav units in a reasonable world.

Also, the strategic consequence of this technique is rapid expansion at low cost, which means in particular that the balance of power at the start of the game is blown away.
