I was playing as the Byzantines. I've had an alliance with the Papacy and the Hungarians among others for about 20 years now, until the hungarians decided to invade Wallachia with 2,500 men against my 600 man garrison and the pope decided hitting Naples with Urban Militia, spearmen and Feudal Spearmen was a good idea, when I had a Jedi 8-star general leading a mix of Varangian Guard and byzantine infantry was a good idea.Needless to say, both invasions were crushed quickly with many losses to them, but can I depend on them to do this, whenever they feel like it? I'd hoped XL 3.0 would be a bit better in this respect.

Unfortunately, the AI in MTW is something that is not incredibly easy to modify, in fact, I don't think you can modify it at all, you can manipulate it to some extent by limiting the units it builds to ensure it doesn't build cheap, poor quality ones. But that's about it. If you want an everlasting alliance, try allying with someone on the other side of the map (e.g. Castile-Leonise with Kievian-Rus). That way, if your ally survives long enough, you and your ally will crush the enemy in between you without much threat of your ally backstabbing you. Your paths won't ever cross until only you and they are left standing. Then you're merely left with one extremely massive, immensely strong, unbelievably rich faction that you have to contend with. :cool4:

Raz is unfortunately correct. The AI seems to be pretty much hard-coded into backstabbing you under the proper conditions. The main solace in that is that I don't believe it differentiates between the human player and the other AI factions -- in other words, it's just as likely to backstab other allies as yourself.

I guess I'll have to resort to the method of invading and pillaging everything in sight to get my point across then.

It's just like life in the Middle Ages! You can't trust anyone ;)

I'd like to think that in the MIddle ages they had more sense than to attack someone without enough troops to overcome them quickly, and they didn't start naval battles that went on forever and only ended with the nation that started it being destroyed, but again there's only so much you can do with the AI as it is.I enjoy when the AI betrays me with a decent army for the challenge, but fighting armies that I can crush easily just annoys me sometimes.

 I have an XL3 game going now as Kiev, and the Portuguese have been my loyal allies all the way from early through to late era. Our common bond was a deep and abiding hatred of the French who are now sandwiched between us. The French backstabbed me after a long period of alliance, damn I'd even let through their Crusades against the Volga Bulgurs. Such ingratitude.... (after all, if they wanted to set up a buffer state between me and the soon to arrive horde, who am I to stop them :laugh4: )

I have found the key to keeping the AI from breaking alliances...want them to do it. I decided I would have my Danish kings be 'honorable' and not attack any allies, figuring I'd have ample opportunities to whack deserving knotheads when they attacked me, or at least be able to make alliances that would void the ones I wanted out of. Not so...I want to mash the French so bad I can taste it but they are firmly loyal. Meanwhile the English have refused repeated offers to ally with me while the French are thumping them right out of existence for the second time.

LOL. Yeah, that happens too sometimes.... :laugh4:
