It figures that most of the soldiers are wearing LS, but the centurians look OK.

I saw that too in the tv. It is very cool and maybe something that many other cities should do to incentivate the culture of the people, something that we are lacking in our modern times.

Wasn't the Lorica Segmenta very popular in the 1st and second centuries AD? After all, that was Rome's zenith so I don't see why they shouldn't wear it.

I agree. No need to hate on LS, there isnt a timetable era set on the parade.

A shame they couldn't have a variety of outfits from different eras -those who made the costumes obviously put considerable effort into them. Then again, if someone was there, dressed like an EB Camillan Princeps with a pectorale and so on, would a layman even recognise him as "Roman"?

The outfits look like reinactors - most of those I have seen here go for LS as it's how most people view a Roman Legionary. So good luck to them. If we were looking at the pre hoplite Roman of the time of founding most people wouldn't recognise it and the parade wouldn't draw much media interest. Apart from geeks like us of course.

If the Italians were smart they would have their Military raise and keep a full Cohort in Rome to guard the Ruins or whatever. It would be a huge tourist attraction much like Great Britains Palace guards.

The British Guards have a very active military role too - I think there are units of the Italian army that provide the same joint service but the uniform is not Roman!

I'm Italian (not from Rome) and I don't agree: they are already spending our taxes on soooo many useless things you can't imagine. A public-paid legionary cohort patrolling Rome would be too much IMHO.

Interesting, the tax thing is a perspective I hadn't thought about. Anyway, how much more expensive would 100 guys in roman kit be to upkeep than 100 regularly equipped Italian army troops? Weigh that with the potential economic stimulus their presence in Rome would have. I would say that they may just pay for themselves and then some. :wink:

Maybe, but I'd only agree if they first remove some other useless things with the same costs. And knowing the italian government and local administrators... they keep making new things (mostly useless, just to show us - the population - that they are doing a lot of pretty things) but they rarely undo anything :P

Yep, thats pretty much the same with any liberal government. They come up with new and innovative ways to tax you and spend the money on useless crap.

They won't need anything except 880 grams of unground wheat, and about 620 grams of extra food stuffs. Oh, and a few plastic denarii, they won't know the difference.

Well I will say this, picture number 8 makes me want to want to enlist all over again. Women love the military stuff even if they say they hate it or that is boring. Goes to show you, 2000 plus years later, digging in the dirt, having your NCO yell at you all day long, and the whole "every paycheck a fortune" there are still the fringe benefits of fine female attention (at least when you are in town for the parade and not in some god forsaken dessert or forrest):furious3: :wall:

Look at how much of the tax payers' money the English royal family sucks up and wastes. They are completely undeserving of the lifestyle given to them as they have no power.

But look at how much money they bring in from tourism... The queen is nothing more than a tourism attraction, and her two idiot grandsons Harry and William too.
