View Full Version : Roman Legionaries
Another one lol. I was playing my Romani Campaign last night and used my hastati to protect a bridge. I thought they would completely own the unarmoured gauls, but they didnt use the Legionary fighting style of stabbing from behind a shield wall and staying together, so it was just like any other fight.
Also the gauls arnt phased by lack of space to swing their weapons around as they did, and i was wondering if there is any way to help this, or is the fighting style burnt into the program? Thanks again

I'm starting to get a wee bit fed up with all the people coming in to complain how this-or-that unit is this-or-the-other-thing, which usually reads "not how I imagined it" and/or "I'm bloody using it wrong", is all.

The irritating thing is often that complaints we get are really complaints aimed at the Vanilla game, or not knowing how to control basic units.
While we're at it, I'm really displeased with how EB portrays Spartan phalanxes.
According a recent documentary (can't really remember the name, something bout 300 something) these guys were trained in the ancient eastern art of sword ballet.
Who do spartan phalanxes act as normal ones then?
Weren't Spartans supposed to fight off millions of enemies?
anywayz, IMBA! fix it or I go play RTR

The Bean, spend a while looking through the Forum to pick up hints and tips on units, fighting, buildings etc.
But, put your Romans on guard mode, it is a very useful technique, it does have limitations. I especially like it for the Romans, you won't kill the enemy as fast but your units will hold formation better and won't tire as quickly, then switch off for the coup de grace. Though when holding a bridge I leave it on all the time, especially given the AI's approach to river crossings!
Also remember to have your legionaries on fire at will for their pila.

First i always play with KH and the Spartans do just fine, if your mad 1 unit cant hold an entire army at the gates, remember the 300 were eventually slaughtered and that was in their prime, BEFORE 272BC i believe.
If its that big of a problem for you, you can just edit their stats to your pleasure.

Allow me to give you a very simple counter-argument to that: the Vikings. Spears aside their favourite weapons were axes and, among those who could afford them, long slashing swords. Their favourite combat formation ?
Closely ordered shieldwall.
Should be 'nuff said.
Watchman, I'm seriously not having a go at anyone...I dont know anything about whats possible to make the game do, so all i am doing is asking whether it is possible to achieve-which is part of what these forums are about.
And contrary to apparant common belief i'm new to the game lol, i just dont experiment. I find what works and keep using it, so i miss what other people find obvious often.
But yeah thanks about the guard mode tips, i've always only used to stop them chasing after routing enimies, and never really thought what else it might be doing.
But seriously I'm only trying to make the game better, so dont have a go at me

Yeah, nothing personal - just general exasperation.
No harm done lol...i shall have to experiment more often on EB and find different ways of doing things :beam:
Not sure if it will work but the export_descr_unit file contains certain information that could be used to make the gauls more like a mob. Also, how well they're trained helps determine how orderly they are. You could adjust these for the Gauls... I think units fighting in a looser formation suffer hits to morale and generally can be outnumbered (2 men attacking 1 man) more easily by a close order unit.
ALl of that is speculation, except the part about the export_descr_unit file.
