Fought my first overwhelmingly outnumbered battle

I am HRE and I attacked the Byz. They mostly retreated on my first turn but came back in force the next year. I had 1200 vs 4800. I killed and captured 2800 and only lost 580. This was so much fun and the battle really only lasted about 1 1/2 hours. Unfortunately, my general ransomed 500 units back. I wish he would have slaughtered them all. Is there any way to make him kill them?

I am so addicted to this game. It is the best.

Just be careful killing prisoners. Too many and the general gets a vice that gives -2 morale penalty.

I though I did pretty well in defense.

A couple days ago, I had my most sucessful defense. My 3000 Almohad defend against over 6000 Egyptian in Egypt. I killed 2186, captured 615 and lost 244. Over 3000 Egyptians were capture after the battle since they couldn't escape after the amphibious attack. The Egyptian refused to pay some 100,000 florins for the captives including the Egyptian Khalifah, 4 princes, 7 nobles and some 4000 troops. After the defeat, the Egyptian entered a quick downfall. Within 10 years, most of the Egyptian lands were capture either by me and the Byzantine. Sad to see an empire that took over 200 years to build, fall in only a decade.

My best was turning back an Egyptian army of 3000 with an English army of 900. Their king was a good runner, a coward (not sure if it was good runner and coward or something else and coward, but there were definitly two serious morale penalties in there) and a weak attacker.

I set my lads up on a hill and waited, expecting a hard fight since my good troops had skipped on ahead to invade a province further away by sea. Those that I had were mostly understrength veterans and militia.

I killed around 150 of his guys (including half the King's bodyguard) with longbows and a catapult before first the general and then the entire army turned and simply legged it. Then there was a moment's silence, then the second wave came onto the field, a catapult rock was fired at them as they approached, it missed, and they legged it too.

An extremely interesting fight as the Byzantines vs the Spaniards.

The Spaniards had launched several crusades against the Egyptians and the Elmoheads and they controlled the whole of Iberia and north Africa. I controlled the Balkans and Asian provinces up to (and including) Khazar. I was fighting a war against the surprisingly strong Hungarian and had two crusades (by English and France respectively) ante portas.

Soooo... my only significant force in the middle east was a 1100-men strong (5 byzcav, 2 kataphraktoi, 4 Varangian and the rest byz inf) army in Sinai.

I had a force in Rum and Armenia (just build) and I planned to move them there (via a port in Trebizond) but before I could do that, the Spaniards attack with 7000+ (!!!) men.

Among those 8-10 Jinettes, half a dozen Order Foot, three at least Knights of Santiago, loads of feudal seargents and MAAs, crossbowmen, and the usual assortment of urban militia, militia seargents, spearmen and a few peasants. Interesting thing: In the first three (!) waves they didn't field a single peasant or spearmen unit, that should tell you what kind of a challenge we took.

I had a 9-star general with some pretty good V&Vs (ex heir) to command my force, but the landscape was all but helpfull: two hills (far from eachother) and the rest... plain desert.

It was a truly great battle. It took on for hours and hours... After his three first waves, I had only the Varangian (AWESOME units) with about 60 mean each (I play with large armies) 1 byzinf with about 100 and the two kataphracts: A princes with 4 men and my general... all alone!

We made a last stand on a hilltop in a square-ish formation, totally exhausted even since the routing of the first wave, and managed to kill off the fourth wave. But the fifth was too much - all full units, with a couple of MAAs too - and one Jinette (those did horrible things to my moral in the later stages of the battle, when I had no cavalry to hunt them down).

so, we took the way home. I managed to safely deliver to Tripoli about 300 men, of an army of 1100. They lost almost 5000, of an army of 7000+

A truly epic battle.

Current campaign, Italians. My doges are weak. So I try to make battles for my current, hoping the heirs will be cool. Egypt declared war on me. To punish them, I conquered Antioch with 1000 men. Now, every year, 3000 attack me, I kill 300 with my arbs & pursue them with my king. the 2 last fights, I've only lost a few men(less than 10) due to friendly fire... Cool to get V&V as defensive!

last night I fought a similar battle, Ile de France, 900 HRE vs. 3800something Almohads. In the end I won, but with totally exhausted troops. I general (ex-heir) got the virtues "last stand" and something like expert defender....

Last nite as HRE I had taken some Byz lands and they hit my 800 men with 4400. I was up on a steep hill and had plenty of cav and archers. They didn't stand a chance. I only had to use my infantry to kill kataphraks, the rest I handled with archers and cav. I captured 1400 that I then killed, I will have to look at my general's v&v's. I killed 2800 all together and only lost 156 (mostly cav).

I am also having huge battles with the elmoheads that have declared jihad against me. That war is going well too. They are only throwing a stack at a time against me but they have 4 stacks sitting there. I keep waiting for all of them to attack at once. If they keep it to one stack at a time, they will be dead in a few more turns. Then I can start to sweep thru their territories too.
