Any advantage to annexing papal states

Are there any advantages ie. not being excommunicated, to taking and fortifying rome and the papal states?

When Pope re-emerges, you get to send in your reactionary force with a high-star gen and get to beat the Papists over their head. Seriously speaking, not much.... better to keep him in a small island, and assassinate him if he excomm you.

nar.. i just take the papal states, and 2/3 times he hardly ever comes back

There's a big advantage if you're non- Catholic. No new crusades until he returns. As the Byzantines, you eventually have to controll Italy to ensure free trade so while you're there.....
