View Full Version : What in the name of....

Hard difficulty campaign, High era. I'm playing as Danes. Russians run over 90% of the world (all but english are dead, who have only 3 provinces) and myself (I have Denmark, Sweden, norway, Finland - VERY heavily defended with thousands of advanced units).
The russians were the supreme rulers of the world... every province had either a castle, or citadel (note: I edited the game to start in 100 AD.. giving me about 1000 extra turns to play.. I am now in 411 AD) Anyway, with 90% of the world under Russion rule, I was ready to launch an attack and see if I could take it from them (note: I let the russians expand because the game is too easy.. I wanted to see if I could take a nation that already ruled most of the world).
Two turns before I decide to attack, I am spammed with dozens of messages informing me of various russian provinces rebelling. Finally the turn ends and I look at the map with my emmissaries... the russians are decimated from 90% power, to 2 provinces!! Every single russian province rebelled except novgorod (sp?) and Byzantium. One turn later, the russian king dies (his heirs were killed I guess in the rebellion forceS) and he is eliminated.
All that is left is the english and me... But what the fuggle was that????? This is so goddamn stupid that the whole game was ruined by a world wide rebellion.. I was about to have a load of fun fighting a challenging opponent and he all of a sudden rebelled (I did not use spies or bishops or such to incite rebellion).
This, or something similar, happens time and time again when I am about to face a huge enemy and have an epic war... the stupid nation goes into rebellion and he loses 2/3 of his land.. meaning no fun for me.
Can the programmers PLEASE fix this? I am sick of fighting rebel armies of my foes to take their land.. the computer just goes utterly useless when they begin to control much of the world and go from super power to extinct in 2 turns (this has happened MANY time).
All I ever get to fight are weak pathetic factions that have pitiful armies. It's not right that I have to say to myself "oops, I better stop attacking so I don't wipe him out and have nothing to fight in a few turns."
I have to sit back and let the enemy grow slowly just to have a mediocre challenge (and all I ever own is no more than 5-6 provinces).
The same deal on expert mode....
Can we PLEASE get fewer spontaneous rebellions? It's no fun at all.
Note: I have never once had a rebellion, so that isn['t the problem.. I have no difficulty keeping 200% loyalty in all provinces (even when I own 2/3 of the map).

Reading between the lines what you describe sounds like a ruler triggered rebellion.
With a large empire the position of your ruler becomes critical to the loyalty of your provinces. If the ruler moves too far too quickly it can trigger massive rebellions in outlying provinces.
I suspect one of two things happened.
either
a) The massing of your troops on the border caused the Russian ruler to move along with the bulk of his forces to counter the threat triggering a mass rebellion.
b) The Russian ruler was killed in battle or died of old age and his hier was somewhere out in sticks triggering a mass rebellion before he could get back to take up the reigns of government.
Funnily enough most people would see this as a positive thing as it keeps the game active. One of the big beefs with STW was the Hojo Horde syndrome where purple always seemed to take over the world.
Even if you hadn't had the mass rebelion problem you would have found the Russians suffering from frequent re-emergence issues.

Rome made a damn good run of it and would have gone further if not for the sporadic quality of its emperors.

Naw, it was due to invasions from the Goths. Every single rebellion was put down.

I would be interested, as I expexct others would, on how you managed to edit the game to give you extra turns. I'm hate this time limit on a game that I am enjoying only to have a reminder appear that I have 20 years left to conquer the world. I would like to conquere the world in my time and not the A1's time!!
www.gamefaqs.com (http://www.gamefaqs.com) has a little tutorial how to edit the game..
I know this is off topic but . .
Rome's problems (among many) were:
It was too large for one man to rule.
Co-emperors usually came into conflict.
Succession was almost always contested.
In contrast to Rome I think we have it easy.

All I can say after reading this is:
Its not nice to fool with Mother Russia!
Seriously
After that many years its very likely for a ruler to die with no heir.

yep and it shows even the ai has problems with managing loyalty is large sprawn out empires
seems the rebellion "bug" is a good thing

So whats the final word on your King? Should he stay in his home province, (with a port?) the majority of the game to keep the people happy? If not, where should he stay?

I compared something like this with real life too and Gil told me in a reply that we shouldnt compare this game with once was real life.

King inspired revolt - Possibly the king moved to a province where he was incommunicado with much of his empire - an island province that that lacked a friendly port, eg if he amphibiously invaded England.
Suddenly his whole empire loses touch and all eth local big-wigs get ideas above their station!!

Keep your king in a province that you think best resembles the 'center of gravity' of your empire. Coastal provinces with ports should take precedence over land locked ones. Basically the larger the empire the more important it is to have ports in all your coastal provinces.
To illustrate the importance of your king's provincial placement I'll leave you with the following example. My current English Early era Glorious Achievement campaign has my ally, the king of France, stuck in Brittany without a port to connect him. Since I own the provinces bordering Brittany (Anjou, Normandy and Aquitaine) this means the king of France is essentially blocked from properly communicating with the rest of his lands. As a result numerous French provinces (including Flanders which is closest to Brittany) with sizeable army stacks are in a state of rebellion. Unfortunately my AI controlled ally doesn't seem to realize that building a port in Brittany is the best cure for these rebellions. Ordinarily I would take advantage of this situation but the Almo horde is pouring into Europe from the Iberian peninsula and we Europeans need all the Catholic friends we can get!
Constantinople is the natural center of the board so it is the best mid-late game home for a king.

I don't care if any nation ever held 2/3 of europe.. this is a computer GAME, I am interested in something fun, not 'realistic'. If this game were truly meant to be based on how history actually developed, it would be very repetitive and dull... I just want a game where there is competent AI to give me some sort of challenge... but instead the damn AI suffers from rebellions in every single game I play, every few turns.. A few I don;t mind, but it's irritating to lose an opponent to mass-rebellion... it's like winning by default/forfeit.. it sucks.

Deomoclease,
Did the Russians have a red flag with a hammer and sickle on it? That might explain why they got so big and then just fell apart.

In my Spain-Campaign the Turks suffered from mass-rebellion. They had all Russia, much oriental land and were moving further and further into Europe, after two turns they had just 2 provinces left.
The French and the Sicilians started to grap what was Turkish before but what happened? At once a lot of those rebels became Turkish again. What was this? a fake rebellion?

HAHA WELL SAID! The rebellion bug cuts BOTH ways, for all you apologizers out there. Keep on waffling, developers.
