View Full Version : AIs don't like Punic Wars

Is it just me, or is it usually so, that if both Carthage and Rome are AI, they don't seem to attack each other, but rather sit around for 100s of years as allies? It makes me wonder, cos when playing as Carthage (I detest Rome, praying only for its destruction and harbour no interest of playing as them) I usually can't AVOID a punic war with Rome. But the AIs seem to be best of friends - not just sometimes, but by far the most of the times... :/

They almost always start fighting each other quite early in my campaigns.

Maybe it has something to do with the campaign difficulty?

I play usually medium campaign difficulty and they stay allies for years too ...
Perhaps in Hard or Very Hard they will have a war sooner :inquisitive:

In my campaign (H/M) they go to war and make peace almost every turn. Every single turn there is an announced ceasefire between Rome and Carthage, and from what I can tell neither one of them has taken a city of the other's.... I think this A.I. behavior is a little strange, and they do not seem to want to fight each other, but they are still belligerent rivals.

I too have experienced the war/ceasefire phenomenon, which was caused by one or the other besieging Messina. Eventually it will be taken and the war will commence. Right now I'm watching the two go at it vigorously, having seen Carthage take Siciliy for the first time! I'm doing 1.1 with BI.
Strange...
I play H/M as Romanus and the Charthaginians behave as they should. Maybe it's the way you play which triggers or not.
From 264 till 240bc I had the Punic war near Messana going on with their armies and fleets annoying my force.
I just ended the first Punic by Force Diplomacy ceasefire and the handing over of Lilibeo.
No complaining concerning the ai's behaviour sofar...
Seems balanced enough on Hard strat map

I guess one of their armies could be stranded on an island belonging to the other faction and starting a siege every other turn.

In my 1.0 Sweboz campaign the Roman would constantly besiege Eleutheroi Messana and so go to war with the Carthies, but then the Romans would be kicked back and Carthage would make a peace with them, only for the Romans to attack Messana again two turns later. This went on for over 40 years until the Messana governor actually died of old age and left the city undefended, apart from a unit of just 2 Akontistai with 3 Gold Chevrons. Must be the first time he actually dies of old age in a campaign.

Well, playing on H/M with BI .exe so far I get the War/Ceasefire phenomenon. Romani seem more active though, having taken most of mainland Italy (except Taras) as well as Sardinia through naval invasion. They have also landed a small force on Corsica with a Blasio family member who just sits on the north-east of the island without doing anything, even though the Carthaginian garisson if very weak... The Qarthadastim seem pretty much asleep, having only sent an army against Kyrene (a great disaster, btw) as well as landing a couple of tiny armies on Magna Graecia.

My hatred towards Rome...? Well, if you love Carthage, the Seleucids and the Macedons, you're kinda BOUND to dislike Rome, right ;).... I usually play Medium and they never declare war - actually Carthage is usually at peace with everybody... I don't mind it, just thought it was rather odd :laugh4:
