What agent does reduce the chance of ageneral being assasinated? Is it spy, assassin or priest? Assassin? Maybe all?

you can add the following traits to your general/governor:

CounterSpy 3
AssassinCatcher 3
HighPersonalSecurity 3

to reduce the chance of assassination/sabotage in your settlement.

Spy

Hmm are you sure - I have been assassinated with a spy in my stack, but never when I have an assassin in my stack. Also, when you add an assassin to your stack, he says "Protecting the troops, Sir"

I'm pretty sure nothing is foolproof.

Playing yesterday as Sicily, I had my faction leader assassinated in Naples, by a lowly 1-skill Venetian assassin. I had a spy in the town and I was training an assassin there the turn the enemy assassin struck (so I'm not sure how the timing works there, if my assassin was considered to be in the town or not). My spy had at least 3 skill, so that must have been one lucky assassin.

I'm playing M2TW with Kingdoms installed, no other mods or patches.

Wish I knew more about the calculations made when determining things like security vs. assassination attempts. Anybody have any insight?

Can't base anything on sounds, those are often misleading.

From my testing only spies reduce it noticably. As CMRVHS pointed out, they are also not foolproof and are subject to chance.

Spies do seem to reduce the chance of assasination for me. They also increase the stacks LOS. Quite useful.

Has anyone ever noticed an AI general carrying a spy or assassin? I don't think I have. But, I'm old and forget a lot. (I do know for certain that in none of my games have the Mongols or Timurids.)

They do at times.

Also if you are concerned there are a few ancillaries and traits that reduce chance of assassination. Veteran Warrior or Swordbearer - to get either one send your general into personal combat (he has to get a bunch of kills and lose some HP)

Also guard dog helps, you get one by surviving an assassination attempt.

A bunch of the holic relics you get by capturing muslim cities on crusade increase personal security as well.
