after expirimenting for a whole day, i can not find out how to tweak it without getting a CTD. even the smallest change (example: law 3 to law 4) causes the problem. can someone give me a guide on how to mod the trait file?

Try not using notepad. There appears to be something wrong with using notepad when modding. I think textpad or something else would work.

Textpad is not free, so you may want to get Notepad++ instead.

Where/how do I get Notepad++?

Google. One would think people were used to searching out stuff on the net by now. :inquisitive:

I just thought you could have saved me the time by giving a direct link to the website to download it.

The time it takes to reply on a forum is shorter than you changing the website to google.com and typing in notepad++? How slow is your internet connection?

Sigh.

Here we go again:

Notepad is being smart by remembering the last econding you used to save a file with; instead of the encoding the file usese itself. That's all cool and stuff; but when you edit the traits code you must make sure that you do *not* save in Unicode formats. For some reason the game doesn't like Unicode encoded traits files; however the other option in Notepad (ANSI) works just fine.

Still, a more advanced text editor wouldn't be such a bad idea either.

My time on the computer has been sporadic since the introduction of studying for school final's and GTA IV on the XBox 360 into my free time. I haven't even broken an hour's worth of EB 1.1 time this whole week. Anyway, thank you for the help Foot, I decided to try out WordPad first before I downloaded notepad++ and that seems to be working fine.
