What an odd start. I'm playing England early/hard and for 4 turns in a row the Pope threw 1,000 fl my way. Does anyone know what triggers this? 4 times in a row seems like a little bug. He also waited a few turns after I attacked the French before the excom warning went out.
Needless to say things are going well. Bribing the Welsh was affordable and I was able to balance guns and butter while reducing France to Brittany and taking Scandanavia.
The funny part is all of my Princes are either cracked brained, alcoholic or just plain drunk all the time. But coming from a traditional Irish family I can relate.
Here's another oddity, the Danish launched an invasion of the HRE (my ally) leaving Denmark wide open.
Ya never know!

As the Danes, once I had conquered the entire world except the papacy, they started giving me 1000 florins every 2 or 3 years.

Hmph. Never once did they send me anything when I was battling the Egyptians and the Turks all across the continent.

Nor when I saved their asses from the Almohads.

No! Only now, when they the only scrap left on my plate do they start feebly sending me cash. Sheesh.

I too have a problem with my english kings and princes being 'less than'royal.

I got quite a few donations from the start from the pope also...

but, I haven't committed a single king or heir to battle, because I have the most disfunctional royal line imaginable.

I've seen everything from my kings and heirs - unhinged loon, 6 toes, drunk, lazy, secret heretic, etc. etc.

All I can say is--- my royal line will me a hell of a discovery channel show.

Ace - all the more reason to send them in to battle, but on their own, watch the inbred fools die and hope a better one comes along to inherit the throne.

Oh and on the other point what do you have to do to get money off the pope, as the english i seem to get donations for the first few years and then nothing ever again, perhaps i should go on crudades, build churches and if that fails threaten to kill him? I suppose you have to be the most religious guy out there.

That happened to me twice within the first 5 turns of a Spanish Glorious Achievements campaign on Hard. I guess the Popester liked the fact that I was making the Iberian peninsula safe for Catholicisim... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

I have noticed also that with the english you get a 1k startup from the pope.

I am of three minds on the cause of this;

1. The pope notices you are bordered with rebels and hopes the money will help your none catholic expansion.

2. As the english i always spend 5k ish in the first year, so the pope send a little bung to help me along in the assumtion that i will send many poor blighters on crusades.

3. The pope is (as always (like God http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif)) a F&*&ing mystery.

MonkeyMan, I use my Princes to go on long, wild flanking moves (keeping in character)to take out french ballistas and cats. They usally survive and then plow into the backs of some other unit.

Which reminds me, what is with the AI and the use of siege weapons on defense. The French build a lot of them but always seem to advance their inf to me half way.

I get the Royal Knight charge but does the AI consider its peasants and militias better off attacking than waiting for my spearman in the woods? Their advance cuts into the time I'm under fire, and brings their boys to my long bows. Do they get pulled forward when their general charges?

I can understand not having an imaginative AI but I think a solid, conservative, stay at home type, should be possible.

Well, his holiness the pope hasn't given me a penny, nada, nowt. Despite umpteen crusades, reducing the Egytians to a bunch of peasants, and saving Christian civilisation from the Islamic Elmos. In fact, as I launched another crusade to retake another Iberian province for the Church he INCREASED the crusade fee on me! Cheeky monkey. You'd think he'd be grateful or something...

Note that you get the papist money for converting pagens to christianity (pagens are a non-playable religion in the game.) You don't get it for conquering/converting other catholics, orthodox catholics, or muslims. It's why you generally only get the money near the beginning of the game, Since there's no way for the pagen religion to increase in size, over time it becomes non-existant.

That's interesting, as it supports my own pet theory about the Papal 'bungs'. This is that the poorest non-excomm catholic nation gets sent them each year (or every few years?). If you were the only catholics left it would fit!

I also think that the reason why we don't tend to see the donations after the first few years is because invariably, either the Danes or Aragonese will go into debt from having to pay the upkeep on all the Royal knights they get quite early on. Thus each turn, unseen by us, the Pope is sending the cash to one of these two, trying to bail them out of debt.

It's just a theory though, & I accept that it may have flaws, or just be plain wrong! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
