I was getting my castle assaulted and I had a couple of arbalests sitting inside. One of the enemy units was crashing the front gate and then I noticed that one of my arbalests was firing. So I zoom in on the arbalests and sure enough the arbalests were firing on the unit trying to knock out the gate. So I moved the other arbalest unit close to the gate and they fired at the enemy unit also.

Hmmm... That only took a month and a half of playing this game to figure that one out. So after the battle, I thought it would be interesting to see how effective missile units are firing through the gate. So I tried some custom battles and the arbalests would not fire through the gate. Nor would the crossbows, desert archers, or nappy throwers.

So can anyone explain why it worked in the campaign battle and not in the custom battle. Maybe I have been playing too much and just dreamt that it happened.

In the tests you did, was the enemy trying to knock down the gate, or just sitting there?

How damaged was the gate?

Was it a castle gate with a portcullis or a solid gate, or a stockade gate?

How close were your troops to the gate?

I've had units shoot "through" gates and walls - generally when the enemy is eitehr trying to knock the wall down, or is some distance beyond it - there apepars to be a dead ground at intermediate rangegs.

And it also helps if the shooting unit is some distance from the wall or gate - apparently it makes it easier to shoot, so I guess they're shooting over it.

Hakonarson,
They were trying to knock down the gate.

0%-99%

Portcullis if that's the one you can see through.

My troops in the custom battle were at all ranges.

The thing I noticed in the custom battle is that when I would move the cursor over the unit it would show them as reloading, aiming, and firing; even though they weren't going through motions or expending bolts. Unlike in the campaign battle, the arbalests were going through the motions and expending bolts and dropping the enemy like flies.
