View Full Version : EB Fan-video Contest!

Teleklos Archelaou

Greetings Europa Barbarorum fans.

Today we have a first - an honest to goodness contest for EB fans, with real prizes to be won also. We are, in fact and possibly surprisingly to some out there, just human too: fan videos are something that are especially cool, and while there are a few videos of EB out there on YouTube and similar sites, there has never really been much of a request for them. We hope to change that today.

We are offering prizes for the best fan created videos that feature Europa Barbarorum. The team will send the winner his or her choice of a hooded EB sweatshirt (you pick the size) or long sleeve shirt, as well as an EB mousepad. You even get to pick which Caratacos or Discoskull unit art image is featured on them also! The runner-up will also get an EB t-shirt with your choice of unit art as well. Here are some examples:

https://img183.imageshack.us/img183/4871/productspj1.th.jpg (https://img183.imageshack.us/my.php?image=productspj1.jpg)

So what are the rules? The videos should be between 2.5 and 5 minutes in length and must feature scenes from the mod itself. These won't be hosted by EB, they will just be posted by the creators on YouTube or whereever else is easily accessible. We just want to provide a little motivation, but we aren't interested in making them "ours" or anything like that. Other than that, there aren't really any rules about what must be shown, how to do it, what music to use, anything. Again, we don't want any ownership of or responsibility for them, we just want to enjoy them along with the other fans. If you are interested in some inspiration, there are always the absolutely amazing videos made by sin329 of M2TW battles on Youtube, like his Battle of Ravenna (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BubXmPP0zPQ) or Battle of Crecy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aNf1mQQ7_4) as well as his others there. The best ones out there currently for EB are probably those by whitesharkin in his video AAR like this one, his Chapter 3 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DK6jTDrHMzA). As you can see, it's always better to be able to crank up the graphics to the highest level possible, and have huge armies. That's just going to be the case no matter what, but we still hope everyone who wants to participate will do so, no matter their systems.

The deadline for submissions will be two months from today, and then we will probably take at least a week or so to do a thorough vote on them. The results will then be posted here. Enter as often as you like also! There is no rule prohibiting multiple entries here. We will make every effort to get the prizes sent to any international address.

Good luck and we look forward to seeing the entries!!
-The Europa Barbarorum Team

Guess I got my new computer just in time.

Does anyone know of any good video recording programs that don't stick their logos on your videos? I know FRAPS and GAMECAM do this unless you register.

Any and all suggestions will be highly appreciated.

I did this awhile ago, so I figure it is still relevant to this contest. It's a mediocre attempt at a video (my first try), but I figure any competition is better than none. :2thumbsup:

I suppose this is the place to ask this, I've been playing with the battle replay controls but I can't seem to get them figured out. I figured out how to make the gui go away and move the camera, but I can't seem to figure out how to advance or rewind time. I think there is a way, hitting 'i' brings up the time line and '+' and '-' advances and rewinds it, but there seems to be no way to get that to correspond to the action. Anybody know where I can find a guide to such controls?

This is the best guide I've found, but it doesn't seem to cover what I perceive are all the features of the replayer:

Actually, I tried once a few years back to requisition about 6 to 8 high-end computers at a lab at my University for the express purpose of recording, editing, and directing the Battle of Cannae using EB.

When I told them I had to install EB on each terminal they slapped me with a flat "no." Even if it was for "educational purposes." I would been allowed to use the film in the course I was TAing. But they didn't care.

But that's essentially what I think I'd need.

The Battle of Cannae would require about eight players total.

1-Roman skirmishers and triarii
2-3 Roman infantry legions (hastati and principes)
4-Roman Cavalry

5-Carthaginian left cav (Lusotannian and Gallic cavs)
6-Carthaginian right cav (Numidian Cav)
7-Gallic/Lusitannian center
8-Libyan infantry wingers

The PCs required would have to be top-of-the-line to be able to a) handle that many soldiers, b) have everything maxed out (max detail in units, vegetation, smoke/dust, etc), and c) run as smoothly and seamlessly as sin321's Crecy and Ravenna animations.

Another possibility suggested was to film three or four segments of the battle separately. Example, film the infantry clash in the center using 4-6 players, and the cavalry clashes separately, with 2-4 players each.

The entire thing would have to be overseen by a director, and every maneuver thoroughly scripted and delineated ahead of time. It would be a hell of a task, and just filming the actual combat and maneuver footage would be a heck of a task.

But imagine! Watching 50,000 Romans marching toward battle as they had 2300 years ago!

*sigh*

Some day, when I get my PhD and get a tenured position, maybe then I can flex my academic muscles and get that battle filmed and edited. Then I could show it in my classes.

LorDBulA

You are getting to it wrong GodEmperorLeto.
It has to be movie not a replay.

In hollywood when they make movie they dont take 10000 guys and order them to fight for 2 hours and in this time they record all battle scenes.
You can direct it scene by scene.

Why do you want to fit in 50000 troops in one shot. Its impossible. Show 3000-5000 in one shot and it will make great impression but still you will barely see most of them.

What you describe is totaly doable on one good computer, but you must think about it as a movie and not battle.

Niether am I. In fact, though I like pretty much any other kind of music, I just can't stand death metal. So I just turned off the video's sound and put on some Jimi Hendrix instead. Otherwise it's a fine video (excusing the visible UI, of course).

By the way, stupac's link tells you how to remove the UI.

stupac
05-11-2008, 01:33
removing the ui is easy, my problem is I can't figure out how to move the timeline. As in advance or rewind. All I can use is the ordinary battle time advance features (2x, 3x) without being able to rewind. Is it possible to rewind in the replayer?

Hooahguy

:thrasher: AWESOME JOB HOOAHGUY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

btw man what the name of the song in the getai video!!!!!!

"A cadence to Arms, by Dropkick Murphys"
it says it in the bottom...

btw Birka Viking, that was ok, but i suggest you dont use WMM- use Sony Vegas Pro 8.0- u can use the trial version for 30 days. luckily my dad sometimes works with movies and he uses Vegas so i got it free

btw again, the most crucial thing in any move is that the sound & the movie go well together. ull notice that w/ my pahlavan movie, the second time it said "shadow on the wall" i had an overhead view & their shadows- and i timed everything so when the music was soft, the action was soft, and vice versa.
as i said, timing is crucial!

One can, of course, make his own shortcut to enable movie cam with EB1.1 as well; apart from messing with the xml files used by the Trivial Script. Sorta depends on what you prefer, really.

For the shortcut:

"<Your RTW>\RomeTW.exe" -mod:eb -movie_cam

Alternatively you can enable the movie cam through the Trivial Script by default. Here's how:

Got to <Your RTW>
Find the file: ebconfig.xml ; open it.
Find
<Element>
<ID>RtwStart</ID>
<Type>String</Type>
<Values>
<Text>RomeTW.exe -mod:eb</Text>
</Values>
</Element>

Change it to:

<Element>
<ID>RtwStart</ID>
<Type>String</Type>
<Values>
<Text>RomeTW.exe -mod:eb -movie_cam</Text>
</Values>
</Element>
Save and exit the file.

It only works in a replay of a custom battle or historical battle though. So it wouldn't really help in AAR pictures.

I recreate key battles as custom battles and save the replay. Then I load the replay and play camera man to get the most cinematic pics. My AARs tend to be sweeping dramitizations full of actual game events and roleplayed events alike. :beam:

Korlon
05-15-2008, 18:11
Eh? But the AS didn't fade. You're giving yourself a broad range of from win to lose. If you said, "My chances of winning are fading faster than Hayasdan faded," then it would make more sense. Now your range is from lose to... well losing faster. Unless you meant what you said before, but then the "Darn" would make no sense.

Try choosing "watch in high quality" when watching on Youtube; it's right by where you rate videos and such. It'll turn it into pretty much the same quality as when I uploaded it.

I actually showed the text much faster before. I could read it just fine, but I figured many others couldn't. Guess I didn't lengthen it enough.

I can make another one with other sorts of music on it

no please, you are the artist, so choose only the music you feel inspired, my comment was only about my "personal" tastes on metal music, but the whole video is excellent and epic, and i think if you choose the music you like, that is very important to make an inspired video, keep it up with other videos when you have the time!
and to be sincere when the cavalry lower the spears and charge the music has its part to the epic feeling, so i correct my previous sentence:

"except the music that is not my kind of music, but i enjoyed the whole video the same"

salut!

Yep, this is now what I was expecting in trying to get this contest going. Multiple people, some with multiple entries. Some good stuff! I have my own particular tastes, which I won't talk about here, but still I'm glad to see more and more people interested in this. I uploaded some new options for the prizes too (more designs from Caratacos: the sabaean general, the sweboz general, the midland elite brit, the indogreek, the celtiberian, and the hayasdan general).

If I remember correctly from my own trials, use the * (asterisk) key to move up. Use the / (forward slash) key to move the camera down. Use the - (minus) key to pan the camera down. Use the + (plus) key to pan up.

I'd suggest making your own shortcut instead of wallowing your way through the trivial script. If you need to change from singleplayer to multiplayer and back, just go to configuration and do so.

Just add -movie_cam at the end of the target address in the shortcut, being careful to put a space before the -movie_cam.

I believe CA made those videos using the rendering function, which has, since 1.3, been rendered unusable due to some changes to the executables or whatnot. So you'll have to settle for still shots or start getting used to the idea of doing the movement yourself.

I have another video in the process of editing. It's going to be relatively short compared to my other videos, but it'll be nice nonetheless. Music's already in. Just need to edit sound, which should take a few hours, and stick in a short introduction.

By the way hooahguy, might I suggest not using so many transitions? It really cuts into the excitement of battle. Probably a fifth of the time I'm watching a black screen.

Hooahguy
05-18-2008, 15:16
neh, its not a transition- its a fade in/fade out- is a must for me- cutting immediately looks unfinished-

Good. Using too many transitions is actually a sign of an amateur. Though we are amateurs, we should strive to imitate the masters! Just watch any movie; you'll see that in an action scene, you'll never see any sort of transition, just a whole bunch of cuts.

Also, does Vegas have anything that resembles a dissolve in Adobe Premiere Pro? Those fades are too slow to work with.

Very good Korlon!

I will hopefully upload my film tomorrow. My network-card is messed up so I cant upload anything from this computer. Ill take the film to school and try it from there... btw: what film-formats do youtube support?

Korlon
05-18-2008, 22:12
What video file formats can I upload?
YouTube accepts a wide range of video file formats such as .WMV, .AVI, .MOV, and .MPG transferred from most digital cameras, camcorders, and cell phones.

If you don't think your current video file format is recognized by YouTube, you may get the best results from converting your file to MPEG4 video with MP3 audio.

I highly suggest using the XviD MPEG-4 codec to compress your file though. It's what I use when I uploaded to Youtube and the quality's excellent as long as you choose to watch it in high quality.

Well, what I told you to do was how to show it in high quality, not HD. I don't even know if YouTube supports high definition, but they probably don't.

And I do agree about linking posts or just putting names in the first post with their videos beneath that.

Hey. I understand I'm brand new to the forums. I rather enjoy playing the mod, it is, if I may say, the best one I've ever come across. So accurate and much more complex than The Creative Assembly could ever had made. I fancy myself as quite the director, actually. I've made game movies before, a few on RTW, M2TW and certain other games. So I will try my hand at this! Using movie_cam and a top notch editing program.

Oh, and might I say, there are some splendid and quite amazing videos in this thread. This community is a talented lot, I can tell that straight away!

May I ask when the competition ends? Apologies if it's already been said, I cannot seem to find it on the OP and anywhere on the recent pages and the first 20 or so.

Nicely done hooahguy, there were alot of close up shots, how about a few more which give a sense of the greater perspective, ie along the length of armies, and even perphaps above, partic when you consider that perphaps the Parthians could fill a large area with all those horse archers on the march.

For whatever Faction I was doing, I would want to particually portray something about them, which you did with the heavy cav, but what about what they are well known for, the Parthian shot(which might not work, unless you can show the Parthians lurring an Enemy with their cav being chased, in the greater tactical sense of the battle).

Also what strikes me about the Parthians, both from playing them and from what happened to Crassus and the Legions, is the devastating constant hail of arrows they can put down, because they don't fire in volleys, just a massed continual rain, partic if you have the correct masses of those unarmoured h/archers.
Shots of units under very heavy fire, the first time I watch units recieving what my Parthians could dish I thought wow, look at that!

Anyway just my views, no critisim intended.

Hooahguy
05-23-2008, 13:42
well, theres a problem with showing big armies for me.....
when i record, my FPS drops down to at most 5 FPS, and it lags a ton, if i have more than 8 units. when i dont record im fine- i can have multi-stack battles and still have at least 40 FPS. but not when filming. it may be my FRAPS, maybe ill reinstall it then well see.

1. How long before the contest is called? I've just started work on a video, man, didn't realize how much work this is. Just want to know how much time I have to polish it up.

2. Anyone have any recommendations for a free, non-linear video editor? I'm used to using premier when I used to do editing for a public access show, but I don't have it anymore. Now I got 4GB of raw avi ready to be distilled down.

Thanks guys.

In short: excellent job; and there's a nifty Adobe premiere effect/setting which will allow you to improve upon the slow-motion frames. Again excellent job.

-- Thanks; but unfortunately I don't have Adobe premiere... something about Windows Moviemaker & Vegas Pro and it being related to wmv file format + uploading to Youtube. Also he's been influenced by what he saw at the beta-tester fora.

Here is my entry to the contest.
I tried various video sites to upload it to, but all of them butchered it too much for anyone to enjoy. That's why I uploaded it to a direct download site.
You need an Xvid (http://www.digital-digest.com/software/download.php?sid=1052&ssid=0&did=1) codec to watch:

Legion Strong (http://www.file-upload.net/en/download-913571/wurstiworks---Legion-Strong.avi.html) (~60 MB)

Since the rendering feature of the R:TW MovieCam only works up to version 1.2, I had to use EB 7.2 to realize the video.
As some of you may notice, this was heavily inspired by the Army Strong (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSbCnWe6e1o&feature=related) advertisement campaign of the United States Army.
You can get the music of my video from this (http://www.usaac.army.mil/sod/) site.

Thanks!

I call it "Variations on Romano-Parthian Slaughter." I was hoping to get a few more entries in, I got tons of ideas, but I'm not sure I'll finish them before the contest is over, but c'est la vie.

It says the videos "should be" between 2.5 and 5 minutes. I think it will get consideration - if someone puts a lot of work into something like that, and it's 2 minutes or 6 minutes, we aren't going to just throw it back at them (hell, if they posted something 15 minutes that was awesome, I think we'd consider it too). In the end, we will take the time into consideration and vote on what we as a team think is the best one.

It was epic. Very creative. The battle reminded me of the last battle between the Arsacids and the Romans, the dreaded, heavily contested battle of Nisibis 217 CE.

If you can make a Director's cut, I wouldn't mind even twenty minutes of this as long as it is entertaining enough to separate me from office space boredom. You really crammed the graphics to the max, because that's about as shiny as EB can get. You are quite creative with the in-game music too. I think you got yourself a fan.

Very well done. (Please do PM me if you are planning to upload a full-sized high-resolution version of it; YouTube doesn't really do any video justice)

Great, didn't realize there would be any interest, but I guess I'm absolutely exhausted at looking at the same segments of video over and over. I'll upload a DVD quality version, I'll probably work on a dir's cut after the contest is over cause I want to try to get another entry in, but I had one started. I think I recorded about 3 hours of raw video using 6 different key frame sets, which probably explains why it took me so long to get this done, I just went way overboard and tried to fit everything and the kitchen sink in. I didn't end up getting in many of my favorite scenes either, because they were not essential to the narrative, so I'd definitely like to release a longer version if there is interest.

Thank you for the kind comments, glad you like it. I used 1.1, you'll notice that I referenced TWFanatic and DarthStalin in the credits, I got the Romani models from DS and used Fanatic's aquilifier. I hope that is not offensive to anyone, I absolutely love the new beautiful Roman models, but as a matter of personal aesthetics they don't seem to match other units in the game, even other Romani models, so I chose to use DS's. I thought they would clash too much with the auxilia and praetorians. As for the music, yes I used some of the really excellent music from this mod. I'm amazed at the quality of the custom music and couldn't pass up an opportunity to use it, though I was extremely tempted to use various modern tunes. I was going to reference the music in the credits, but I couldn't figure out the artists for a few tunes, and then I realized if I'm going to do that I should probably end up including the credits for all the artists that did the models in the scene and then I'd probably end up doing all the programmers and then everyone who participated in the mod, so I gave up and just referenced Europa Barbarorum as a whole.

can I put effect on to the video?

You need to publish the video (select publish from the filemenu). You'll want to then publish it to your computer, put in a filename, then on the last page select "more settings" and windows media dvd quality or something. You'll then have to go to youtube and login or register an account, then choose upload and follow the step by step prompts. Good luck, looking forward to seeing your video, man. I know the team is flexible on the length, as long as it is interesting, and I'm sure they are fine with effects, I don't know about the other though.

Teleklos Archelaou
06-29-2008, 22:49
Well, on April 30 at the end of the day (central standard time, U.S.), I said "The deadline for submissions will be two months from today." That logically would mean June 30, but since we don't want to squabble about when is it June 30 in one place vs. another place, let's just say as long as it is submitted by the end of the day on the 30th wherever you are. That should be fine. If something is submitted well into the 1st, I can't say for sure whether or not we will consider it - the team would have to talk it over. I'd hate to have something a lot of work was put into be thrown out because it was a few hours late, but we would have to talk about it and decide between us (since we are deciding on the winners anyway).

windows movie maker cannot save the movie to the specified location. verify that the original source files used in the movie are still available, that the saving location is still available, and that there is enough free disk space available then try again

I've tryed other locations

I've tryed putting all the files used back to where they were first recorded

trying to save to harddrive and I got enough room on my disk

could it be that the movie to long? or to big 101.93 MB and I try saveing on you tube it's not working need different format and tryed using sony vegas to see if that could read the data which it cann't :sweatdrop:

is there anything else I can try?

Hmm, let's see, where are you trying to save the video? Make sure you select publish to this computer and set a path somewhere on c:. Also make sure if you have video or audio clips on an external drive that the drive is plugged in so that WMM can find them when trying to publish (make sure the drive letters haven't changed either and that you haven't deleted, renamed, or moved any of the source files after importing them). After you publish it you will have a video file in the format you selected on your computer at the path you selected. I suggest using dvd quality (3.0MBPS), which will get you a nice .wmv file. Then you need to go to youtube.com, login, and click the upload button and follow the instructions. You'll select the file you published. You don't actually use windows movie maker to upload the video.

I wouldn't upload the movie maker file, it is useless without the source files in the exact same locations as on your computer, nobody will really be able to play it.

anyway I think it has something to do with the video files I moved them to ones I used and ones I might use in to different folder from where they orignal came from and when I couldn't upload them I moved them back to were they can from could I have messed it up by doing this?

I'm used fraps to record the videos

anyway if I can't get it sort in 2 hours I'll post back and let you know I can't enter but will still try to get the video to you at a later date

Yeah, if you move, rename, or delete any of the files, WMM won't know where to find them, all the project file does is save paths of the source files, it doesn't actually contain any video. Make sure you move the files back to exactly where you had them when you imported them in and it should work. Sounds interesting, look forward to seeing it. In WMM, save just saves the project file, publish takes the source files and encodes it into a video file for use on a computer or for upload. Sometimes "save" can be used loosely because publishing can also refer to saving a file and vice versa, but that is the nomenclature used by WMM.

Should, try to put the clips back where you had them when you first started editing, then reopen the file in WMM. Check for any files with red x's or that won't play, and if you can't remember where it was supposed to go, re-import it.

Pretty good, looks like you played it in WMM and used some type of screencapture program, that's probably why the audio and video isn't as good as it could be. You had a good, cohesive narrative (though there was a bit of mis-spelling in the titles). Namely it was technology holding you back, bro. You could also have made use of the movie cam a bit (and key framing), but that's nit-picking I think. I wish I had done the research to do an accurate historical battle like yours, but I spent all my time just fiddling around with the camera.

thanks stupac :2thumbsup:

I started to do another one of it but the fourth age has come out so I not sure if I'm going to carry on I tryed to go for mass effect and a kind of story in the battle itself more than anything I though the old film kind of idea put that across better and make the units look more different

I didn't know/start using movie cam after the video I was trying to get it in time for the contest:sweatdrop: I know I cann't spell to well ever so sorry about that I was looking to get it like a movie film in the shortest time possible so not to long to bore but at the same time tells you what happened in the battle although not sure if it a 100% but 80-90% I'm sure

for my new one if I get it done I want to give more of a birds I view with better shots and stuff across between yours and my

EB team members have voted, it has not been open to the public. Hopefully it won't be too much longer before ya'll hear something back on this, but be patient just a little bit longer.

The voting has been done, the winners (when applicable, see post #1) have the opportunity to 'choose their prize'; and when that's all arranged an EB moderator should post here announcing the winners & prizes as well as lock the thread. (And start a new one too.)

When someone takes the time to create the announcement. By the way, I have not got the address for the second place winner yet, and I won't get the prizes shipped until I can pay it in one go.

Because noone seems to be up to the task of making a proper announcement, here's an inadequate one.

Congratulations to our winners, which are:
1st place: Stupac - Variations on Romano-Parthian Slaughter
2nd place: Korlon - In the Life of a Legion
3rd place: Wursti - Legion Strong

It was really a landslide victory for Stupac, taking almost all of the votes. 2nd place and 3rd got an equal amount and got a tie-break voting, which Korlon won with a slim margin.

Korlon, please answer my PM as soon as possible, so I can get the prizes sent :beam:.
