Street battles lasting several hours have gripped the German port city of Hamburg, in what police describe as the worst riots there for years.

Left-wing demonstrators angered by a neo-Nazi rally hurled bottles at police and set cars and rubbish bins ablaze. Police responded with water cannon.

I'm sorry, I just find this dreadfully amusing. NAZIs show up and the lefties start a riot. Don't these people know they're on the same side? :laugh4:

Couldn't help but notice the striking form of the man with the long stick. Looks to be a classic sword strike - stepping and leaning into the strike.

That would hurt and possibly break the arm of a shield bearing man.

Number of guys in protective masks would indicate a concise planned riot - not a spur of the moment thing.

The so-called "Schwarzer Block" of the extreme left always comes masked and ready/willing to riot to demonstrations.

These guys are not much better than football hooligans with the main difference being that they use a political leaning instead of the "support" for a football team as an excuse to riot.

Most lefties are not too happy about the Schwarzer Block to show up at their demonstartions for "support" as they tend to turn a potentially well-meant peaceful demonstration into a streetfight. And guess what is getting the headlines then - the message/arguments of the demonstrators or the violence...

If they come that prepared - they are wanting the police to escalate their response. Yep, it seems if I was a peace loving leftie - I would immediately avoid and cancel any demonstration these fellows decide to grace with their presence.

Someone is going to get killed with guys swinging sticks the way those guys do, and prepared for violence the way they seem in the picture.

That or the police will get tried of getting beat up with sticks and resort to more extreme measures.

Yep makes me glad I didnt chose law enforcement as a career. I would be more inclined to let the knuckleheads duke it out, but that doesn't prevent the riot from spreading - often has the opposite effect - it grows.
