View Full Version : chivalric knights vs. royal knights...
I was looking at the stat page...
Why would anyone pick chivalric (or feudal) knights over royal knights?
Chivalric knights' require a ton more buildings, more support, and all their stats are the same if not lower than royal knights...
The only advantage is that there are 40 chivalric instead of 20 royal. I dunno... I guess that is a huge advantage, but i dunno... anyway if anyone has thoughts I'd appreciate them.

Perhaps you should do some tests in custom battle to see which is better. I would but am not at home, so its not possible at the moment

i use huge units so royal = 20, chiv = 80. So chivalric are just a bit more practical.

Chiv knights are relatively cheaper.
Having 40 instead of 20 is a big advantage.

And, to be exact, you get 53 Chivalric Knights. That's a lot of lances and charging horse flesh for an enemy unit to deal with. Royal knights are good to round out armies that can't accomodate another 80-man unit, but will accept a couple of 20-man royal knights.
53?? Strange why does this guide that I downloaded from the org site say 40?
Ok, I guess that convinced me.

53? What?
Chiv knights are 40 man units.
Maybe you are playing with large unit sizes?

That is strange. Most cav units, including Armenian, Mamluk. Ghulam Cav, Feudal Knights, Mtd. Sergeants and Chiv Knights come in groups of 53.
Just to make sure we're all on the same page: The amount of men in most units (excluding royal knights) are dependant on the unit-size you've set in "Options",
the default of which sets most units to app. 60 men
40 men is the default size for cav, 53 would, i imagine, be one of the larger unit sizes (40x1.33=53).
I think the main advantage of chiv over royals is the size, but they also cost less to upkeep per man, which is maybe worth thinking about...
Curiously, chiv knights are also cheaper to upkeep than feudals. Maybe being chivalrous makes them too polite to have more than seconds at dinner time, while the royals and feudals will stuff pie till there's none left? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

the default sizes are 40 60 100 so yes i guess your unit size in options has been changed but his points are still valid as it is all in proportion http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
imo i find 20 man units are hard to get your money back from them.

Unit size under the options menu? WTF? My software has no such option available. Are you guys running some kind of patched version? Mine is v1.00...

It's in options under Performance. There's a wee scaler there, scroll it up to the top and the armies get really big. I used to play it on that setting but then came to the conclusion it's just not as much fun.
In MP I once had royal knights rout my 2 valor muwahid foot soliders, attacking head on. Chiv knights would never have done that. However I have no personal experience using them in MP as I usually play muslims and when I do take christians I almost never get anything heavier than feudal knights.
Edit: Gahh, where is the underline tag?

Chiv knights are the best cavalry for many factions. Why wouldn't you go for the best thing if you can? They are way more durable and destructive than the feudals as well. Royals are good, especially since the late ones have even better stats than the chivs, but they can't be relied upon to last as long. First, they have less men to start with, and second, because they have less men they tend not to kill as fast, which makes them lose men more rapidly.
Chiv Knight has the same stats as High Royal Knight. 1 Chiv Knight (40 men, 875 florins) cost less than 2 High Royal Knight (40 men, 1250 florins) and cost only 100 floins more than 1 Late Royal Knight (20 men). The best Knight I can get.
I only field Royal Knight early in the campaign since Early Royal Knight require relatively low tech and cost only 325 florins each and I only have to face weaker early units. However, I will go with Feudal Knight (40 men), same stats as Early Royal Knight, for 475 and a little tech up.
You only get that slider option from the main menu, its unavailable from the in game performance options menu.
Small/Default is normal. Medium is 1/3 more. Large is 1/2 more. Huge is 2X.
So if you have 53 man cavalry units you set unit size to medium.

Units size option changes how much men in each unit ahahaha no wonder....
Now i have 133 in feudal sergeants etc, 53 in chiv knight etc, and 80 in ranged etc, and 20 royal knights etc
All this time i thought that option changes how big the units look in battle LOL...
Im wondering how much units would i have in each of these wit the option tuned down?and do the enemy (AI) get the same amount as well?? or have i been playing with a huge advantage (if so no wonder i thought conquering europe was easy).
