View Full Version : Problems with Traits in EB 1.1

After installing the 1.1 fixes all the traits of my family members in my roman campaign ( which I started before the patches were uploaded ) have been messed up, giving all of them all kinds of odd traits like victory conditions from other factions, young generals the elderly statesman trait and removing hard-earned ones important for my campaign ( like the ones of the Gaius Marius-ish character I had finally succeeded in creating through role-play in 172BC ) and I wonder if a new game would remedy this - as I understand of course that not all of the patches are retroactive - or that it could somehow be linked to inconsistencies created by the fact that I play EB on the alx.exe ( using the files uploaded by Maksimus ) which in that case would make me redirect my question to the proper forum.
I have also experienced several letters of most germanic words or names of the Sweboz traits being replaced by strange "?" symbols in new campaigns before and after adding the 1.1 fixes, and I wonder if this might be a genuine bug in EB 1.1 or something with relations to some other error, be it the alx.exe again or perhaps that something went amiss during the installation of EB.

I have not uploaded a savegame as I was uncertain as to whether this would be necessary given the nature of my problem. Will of course do this if requested.

Thank you for your time.

Any changes to the trait file are not save-game compatible.

Thank you for the quick reply, and yes it made sense of course that that was the cause of it, but I was confused by the all the strange question marks in the sweboz campaigns I have started both before and after applying the fixes, any thoughts on what might cause this?

That seems to be a problem with the fonts: â, á, ê and what we have there. Unfortuantly I don't know a sollution (but some one else certainly will).

I must confess I haven't checked that the Sweboz special characters show correctly. I believe they do though; otherwise I'm sure Blitzkrieg80 would strangle whoever touched the file last. I wouldn't know why the unicode characters aren't showing correctly in your case, but if you've been tinkering with it I think you may have used Notepad? Don't do that. Use a unicode-aware editor instead, like Notepad++ or Crimson.

No tinkering done sir, aside that already tweaked in the alx.exe compatibility files I downloaded, and if it has any connection whatsoever I know they were all edited using a unicode-aware editor.

Edit: Also, if it is relevant I had no similar problems in EB 1.0 with or without the alx.exe.

Sorry for double-posting, but I just did a complete reinstall and it would seem that it is not due to any errors during the installation; the question marks are still there in many of the traits.
Would any who reads this and finds the time or will to help be as kind as to go start a Sweboz campaign and check if theirs are the same, it should take no more than five minutes as the bug is visible from the very beginning in the traits of your initial family members and it would be very helpful.

I'll check; in the meantime you can fix it manually by opening the files (just open all of the files in the EB\data\text folder as those are all description files) and save them one by one in UTF-8 encoding over their previous non-Unicode versions. In the exact same location mind you; essentially you have to replace the non-Unicode ones with Unicode ones. (And only use UTF-8 at that as characters in UTF-7 depend on your O.S. etc.)

Just fired up a brand spiking new Sweboz campaign; and have not yet seen any weirdness in the traits of my generals. Any trait you remember (in particular) might help me find/verify this 'bug' more quickly?

Checked the Pahlava by using the generic script from within my Sweboz campaign; and though those nomads in pink have got a lot of fancy ditractrics going on in their names (and units) -- no anomalies found. Would've to check my development build to see if such anomalies arise in traitfixes; but somehow I doubt it as you explicitly mentioned to have seen the 'bug' both before and after you applied these...

Opening the files and saving as UTF-8 won't make any difference, as the information is already lost through a lossy conversion to the windows encoding (wincp1252). He'd merely save a UTF-8 version of the file with lots of valid question mark characters.

It is convention when converting between character sets that when you cannot represent a character that you replace it with "?", although in some cases it's shown as a small rectangle instead.

Examples includes the general Ansuhárjaz who have the traits "W?donezoBl?tom" and "Frow?on", or the faction leader Hêruwulfáz who has "Samanojon?m", "Druht?noz", "Sw?b?zez Victory Conditions" and "Hald?nFagroz" among his troublesome traits. All other traits of these two guys look normal in my game.

Thank you for your time, and my apologies for a late answer, I usually stop by the fora on a daily basis but my studies have had me terribly preoccupied as of late. I do wonder though what could be the issue here as Tellos reports that he has no such problems, perhaps I should try another reinstall this time on Barbarian Invasion.

Which should mean that this is 'on your end' as those traits you mentioned are all there on campaign start. (And I checked them to see if these display correctly.)

This seems to be an alx.exe related problem and I will appropriately move this to the proper forum, thank you again for the help.

Quick question ... I had a Client Ruler set up in one of my cities but he ended up having 2 Heroic Victories and being adopted yet he still has the Client Ruler Trait. Just wondering if (and why) this is intnetional or a bug.
