View Full Version : Saxons recruitable?

Hi There,
Is it possible to make Saxon units recruitable in my MTW2 campaign? For example, as England, could I make it so that Saxon units are recruitable in castles of a certain size? And - just to add some historical flavour - could I call the Saxon units 'County of Hainault' troops?

All you need to do is add them to the appropriate buildings in the export_descr_buildings.txt file and then make sure you have a texture for them in the modeldb file. Do you want them to have the Saxon texture or a mercenary texture? If you want a mercenary texture all you have to do is add mercenary_unit to the attributes in the export_descr unit file. If you want to them to have the Saxon texture then you’ll need to change the entry in the modeldb file. You could also give them the English texture but that would again require editing the modeldb file and also generating a sprite.

Hi There and many thanks for this reply. Although I edited the EDU and EDB files, when i went into a battle, the new Saxon units were 'invisible'. Also, I think I need to import their unit cards so that they show up as recruitable. Anyway, I'll experiment a bit more. Thanks again for the info!

Here is an entry for English Huscarls in the modledb that will make them appear on the battle map in the brown mercenary unit color. Just back up your modeldb file and try replacing the English huscarls entry with this one. You have to be very precise or the game won’t load.

That's great - I really appreciate that code! Many thanks indeed. I'll give it a try.
Even though I've unpacked my game, I can't find the units folder, where all the unit cards live. I wanted to move the Saxon unit card into the English folder (I read about this somewhere), but I don't seem to have the relevant file. I only have a modeldb file because it came with Burrek's textures, which I downloaded recently. Seems that some files/folders didn't unpack . . .
But thanks again for this info - much appreciated.

The unit cards are under Medieval II Total War\data\ui There are two folders to modify – unit_info and units. Just copy, rename, and paste to the appropriate faction subfolders within those folders. There is a system for how they have to be renamed, but just look at the existing names and you’ll figure it out.
