(the connection from seed to Tlacaxipehualiztli seems to be puzzling some readers. This was the spring festival in honour of Xipe Totec, god of springtime and patron of seeds and planting. Captured warriors were ritually killed in a mock battle where they fought with feathered clubs against warriors with obsidian clubs. The bodies were then carefully flayed to produce an almost whole body skin, which was worn as a sort of catsuit by the priests in the ritual dances which followed... and then for a whole month after ... until it literally rotted off their bodies... maya gotta bit wiffy by then methinks. This was supposed to symbolise the germination of a maize seed somehow and guarantee a really good harvest. Xipe Totec also was the god of smallpox, plagues, skin diseases, scabs and blindness... Wonder why?)
