I've been roleplaying a chilvarous campaign as Portugal on vanilla M2TW, patched to v1.2.

I've noticed some strange things, which are not necessarily bugs. First of all, I seem to be able to build Jinetes in Minor Cities from the Stone Walls (a nice feature since it gives the edge over Spain regarding light skirmisher troops), but cannot get them from Large or Huge Stone Walls.

And also I have built both levels of Officers Academies, but they don't seem to give me any units. And I've already had the gunpowder reforms and can get the gun units from Barracks.

Speaking of which Portuguese Arquebusiers look very nice. That morale and stamina will make them function much better against the Aztecs than their standard counterparts, as well as the +5 armour bonus.

Don't know about the stone walls, but Portugal can train Jinettes from the Plaza del Toro, or from a racetrack if they capture one. Are you sure you don't have one of these in the city in question?

Portugal can't train anything from the military academy, I'm not sure why they get them. It gives some very nice traits and ancillaries though, so it's worth building. Plus many of them help gunpowder or artillery, so I suspect it's to give Portugal a little bit more of an edge since they're such a gunpowder-heavy faction.

PAs are very nice units indeed, not quite as deadly as Jannisary or Cossack muskets but much cheaper to get and I think a little tougher and more capable in melee. The thing which always annoys me about gunners is that the AI always seems to target them with its archers and towers which pick them off depressingly easily, so the extra armour is certainly very welcome.

Ah, I never knew the Academies gave traits. I'm guessing thats where one guy got the 'Ordinance Master' from, very nice.

I'm sure about the walls though. I actually checked by right clicking on the different walls. Stone Walls give you Jinetes (Max 2), but no other wall, not even the larger ones, allow you to recruit them.

I thought it was a feature because Portugal are such a skirmisher-heavy faction, but maybe it was just a bug?

Well I've definitely noticed the Jinetes recruitment thing in my game, just as you describe it. It functions like a kind of period of grace before you have to shell out 4,800 quid and 5 turns for a Benicio del Toro. Once your city is upgradeable to a large city and you haven't built the bull ring yet it's quite a pain to have to wait for the walls to be built and then wait for the bull ring.

It's an odd little quirk though huh?
