View Full Version : What is the diference between Dicipline and Morale?
Disciplined status means that the unit will not be panicked by the death of the general, and will not receive the morale penalty from routers who are not of the disciplined status as well. Discipline itself (the one supposed to be provided by the military academy) should provide you with more controlable troops, e.g. less prone to charging without orders.
Morale is a modifier that defines whether the unit will rout or not.

I just think disciplined means a unit can keep its cohesion better in 'hold formation' mode. Spear units are generally screwed once you divide the formation into pockets of unsupported men. A disciplined unit should be less prone to this occurring.
I'm not one of those cool people who has the strat guide though so I could just be talking out of my bum.
Ok.Thanks, but I must say that the Byz.Inf. rarely roots despite its 0 morale. And I agree that more disipline better cohesion.
imho byz inf. routs a little too much. especially after some losses: if one unit routs, the others throw in the towel too.
i cannot seem to win a battle against a bigger army with my inf only consisting of byz inf. definately need spearmen as core of my army.
According to the Strategy Guide, elite and disciplined units who see lesser units routing receive 1/2 the normal morale penalty. The normal morale penalty can be as high as -12 for seeing two units of equal or higher level routing. Also, as hrvojej said, highly disciplined troops do not suffer any morale penalty from the general's death. The general's death penalty is normally -8 for a few seconds before dropping to a -2 long term penalty.
But what is the penalty for the general running??? When he runs we get informed that the enemy is disheartened.
Now it makes sence that the Byz Inf don't like Spearmen running, I must say I was surprised the first time I saw my Byz Inf run in fear when the Spearmen to their left ran. The enemy had yet to come into a flanking position (the Spearmen were slightly ahead of the Byz Inf).
Shouldn't Elites only get a quarter of a penalty when a non-disciplined unit routs... But I suspect that they just treat Disciplined units as normals.

i'm telling you, it is a domino effect!
Kraxis,
I believe that the general routing just produces a normal morale penalty because that's the way it was in WE/MI. Also lost would be the extra morale boost he gives to nearby units.
Rnold,
It is a domino effect because when a unit routs any flank supporting, morale bonus that unit was providing to the next unit is removed. Longjohn said he did something to reduce the so called chain rout, but wasn't specific. In WE/MI, flank support was removed instantly when a unit routed and your whole line could rout instantly if it was engaged and suffering morale penalties from taking casualties.
So, if I'm getting it right, the elite units will "ignore" routers of the disciplined status? In other words, the hierarchy of the levels would be: 1. elite 2. disciplined 3. regulars, am I right?

Yes, that much I know, but the point is more if Elites treat Disciplined as Regulars.
