Hi all,

Is there any bonus for putting your troops behind hedges etc. You get a protection bonus for other cover like woods and hills, but am unsure if CA have included this.

Surely hedges should make charges more difficult and provide some cover from missile troops.

It doesnt cover this in the manual, or the strategy guide. I havent seen this mentioned on this forum either.

Any ideas.

Devs have said that hedges are purely decorative...

So nope! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

No bonus that I've noticed, and I guess the Devs have said "no."

I am hoping/expecting that the next major expansion for TW series includes some advancements in field-obstructions. Fencelines, hedges, and treelines were especially effective at slowing advancing troops and giving ranged units cover.

Numerous battles in the American Civil War were entirely decided by the placement/use of obstacles, fences, etc. In Medieval times (Agincourt) sharpened sticks were effective at holding cavalry at bay or at least directing them away from critical positions.

I understand that we can't expect a 100% accurate battle simulation on CA's 2nd try, but I think they've laid the groundwork (forgive the pun) for a future refinement of field-obstructions.

the devs have stated that hedges are decorative and confer no bonus/penalties.
forests, however, have an effect on some battle stats. See the archives for more info.

hmmmm.there might be something to the "use the scenery" idea, but as it is, my graphics card is totally overloaded with the game as is, I can only wonder how slow it would get with burning buildings and forests.
But then, if the game designers can have collapsing castle walls.....

Hi all,

thanks for all the replies. It is as I thought.

Perhaps in a future TW......

well for the burning forests, if anyone here has ever played Stronghold (great game btw) you would know the "apple orchard" strategy, for those of you you dont know instead of pitch ditches infront of the walls, you put the large flammble apple orchards in front and some pitch near that, light up the pitch, bye bye anyone nearby (or the poor guy picking the apples)

lol - I don't know of too many examples of burning battlefields historically - except perhaps Leignitz and Hattin??

However there are many, many examples of ditches, hedges, fences and other "small" obstacles having effects on battle, and IMO they'd be a good addition - and the code would probably alos allow use of stakes, pits, and other minor field fortifications used a lot.

Come to think of it War Wagons such as the Hussites and others used might be a part of the addition too! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I was going to make a wise crack about shrubberies only being effective against the Knight-Who-Say-Ni! but thought the Monty Python references in this forum have been getting a little over done. Aren't you glad I restrained myself? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
