Out of curiosity, if you could be a soldier in any EB unit, which unit would it be? And why?
Me? Grivpanvar easily. Just look at them...they just had to know they were the best.

Well, I´d most likely be part of the Druhtiz Skandzisku (Scandinavian Spearmen). https://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee276/GeneralAppo/sweboz_druhtiz_skandzisku.gif
What I want to be in? Don´t know, maybe the Cohors Praetoriana (Cohort of the Imperial Praetorian Guard)
https://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee276/GeneralAppo/roman_cohors_praetoriana.gif
Good pay, little to do, good chance of career advancement, nice enviroment, get to hang out with celebrities. Sounds like a nice job.

Any somewhat-armoured fast-moving very good stamina-possessing horse archer unit is good.
:wiseguy:
Probably a Toxotai (an archer). Shooting from a distance without risk yourself. :laugh4:

A soldier in Octavian (Augustus) Caesar's bodyguard. That way I know I'll never see combat, but I'll get to watch every battle, gain all the glory, and march in every triumph.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Perhaps, could have made it more clear. So which would it be?

General's bodyguard for a good general. I would most likely just be there for show, unless something unexpected occured. It would propably be even better to be a bodyguard for a governor. Being a Sweboz general's bodyguard would propably mean lots of games and drinking. Perfect!
Now the real question: which unit could you actually afford to be in?

I'd probably either be in some Anatolian sheep-fuc-- *ahem* I'd be in some Anatolian skirmisher's or hoplite unit, or a Garamantine unit, OR a Yuezhi unit.
any kind of artillery

But I'd probably would have ended up as a pet idiot to some nutjob.

Well if u aim low then the chance of a dissapointment should be pretty slim. The only thing worse would be to become a m2tw priest who is secretly female I guess.

I would probably be that archer that on occassion manages to kill someone on MY team.
Hetairoi obviously, under a competent commander though, no-one is gonna charge me head first into a phalanx.
The slightly overweight naked fanatic scholar infantry. Really low attack points because we're not terribly strong and swords are heavy. Poor armor because we're naked and sunburned. The special attack is where we attack a city, scale the walls and go read in the library.

Definitely Athenian warship as an oarsman. Nice way of paying one's debts.

Afford to be in? He, might as well go all the way with this.
Well, for Rome, probably the whole Hastati, Principes, Triarii thingy, I think I´d be counted wealthy enough for that. As for Greeks, maybe a normal Hoplitai, after all, they are drawn from well to-do citizens.
As for the Seleukids, I´d probably be (counting that I´m of Hellenic descendancy) an Pezhetairos, bordering on Prodromos, seeing as how many nobles there were of that kind.
For Ptolemais, the same as the Sele´s, though maybe I´d be an Galatikoi Kleruchoi.
As Makedonia, probably just a Hoplitai or Pezhetairoi, nothing exciting.
For Luso, either Gestikapoinann or Scortamareva.
For Getai, either Tarabostes or Komatai Thorakitai Stratiotai.
For Sab´yn, probably Abbir Ezra'him.
For Pahlava, maybe Dehbed Asavara.
For Pontos, either the normal Hoplitai, the Lonchophoroi Hippeis or If I´m really cool, the Galatikoi Kuarothoroi.
For Sweboz, most likely Herunautoz.
For Sauromatae, I guess I´m bordering on one of the many Noble HA´s.
Same goes for Saka-Rauka, but in Indo-Saka days maybe I´d be an Hoplitai Hellenikon.
As Karthadastim I´d likely be a member of the Carthaginian Citizen Cavalry, as long as I was a Carthaginian citizen, were I Libyan or something else, that would change of course.
As Hayasdan, maybe the Mardig Sooseramartik.
As Epeiros, Hoplitai or Pez.
As Casse, maybe the Botroas.
As Baktria, the Pez or Hoplitai Indohellenikoi seems likely.
And as Aedui and Arverni, the Bataroas.
I think it is important to remember just how expensive it is to raise and manage a horse. In Rome there was only one group considered wealthier than those of eques status: those who qualified as senators.
Right now I could probably count myself as a euzonos with a helmet. After I get my DVM I could hopefully afford enough to be an upper-end hoplite. There is one member on the team that, assuming stocks don't keep falling, could probably get away as a heavy cavalryman of some kind.
Of course, historically this all depends on where you are.
An example would be that piss-poor farmer in Hellas could be a full-on phalangite if he migrated to Baktria. Plenty of opportunity, land to have, and bronze for armor is cheap because Baktria had tin mines.

I've got a lot of money. I could afford to be just about any elite in the mod.

I'd want to be in Argyraspides of the Seleukids if I had a choice.
I could probably actually afford to be one of them too, maybe even part of the Hetairoi cavalry. My family on my mom's side is quite wealthy and prominent in the Philippines. My grandparents have been close associates to every Filipino president since Ferdinand Marcos, which for anyone who knows about Marcos and most recently Estrada and Arroyo can come across as a mixed blessing at times. :laugh4:
Well, the Silver Shield corps worked a bit differently. They were sons in their twenties of military settlers and equipped by the state until their time in the corps was served.

I'd much rather be a phalangite of the Arche Seleukeia then :beam:
Hmm now maybe I could be one of the Peltastai Makedonikoi. They were quite often sons of nobility and I think being part of a family that have been confidants to leaders of a country would make me eligible (If I was a son of one of the noble families in the Arche that is).

Pez, you sound like a woman :laugh4:. Will you be asking for an aesthetically pleasing (high bling factor) pointy object with which you can force opponents to say "Ouch, that hurts"?
Abou makes a good point: most likely I'd be standing with 239 somewhat unwilling co-workers either wavering or routing.
Well I'd like to be in the Irish super-heavy inf, the idea of carrying more metal than a medium sized motorcycle on my back appeals to me.
If I lose a few more kg's I'll be volunteering for Dhampir's elite formation. Maybe we can have "escalator ladders" to make the wall climbing a bit easier?

I'd probably wind up a Peltast, a Hoplite or a Skirmisher-horseman of some kind. We can afford a Pony or two.

Oh, but I already have an aesthetically pleasing point bling bling with which to poke the opponent in my right hand. If all goes well, he doesn't have to say a thing -- he wouldn't be able to. :D

Any of the three man-tank units.

Perhaps an archer or skirmisher or Voinu (geographicaly), I am hardly a macho, so there is no chance of being something where lot of strenght is needed. Another oportunities are siege engineer, diplomat or spy. :laugh4:
And the top ones - with good social status and training - Elite Hoplite,Brihentin, Bosphoran archer
Cartaphilus
05-15-2008, 17:33
Geographicaly I would be a balearic slinger.
Ethnically I don't know, in Hispania it's difficult to say (I can't see more far than Middle Age), probably some sort of iberian milites, roman or german trooper.
If I had to choose something - I would go with some elite phalangites: Lets say Seleucid silvershields - You would find me in the last row. ( I guess that this could be quite a safe place for me with at least seven (up to fifteen) rows of battle hardened and skilled veterans in front of me)
Geographicaly I would be a Boii swordsmen, but ethnically I would be proto-slavic human flesh eater (Voinu - Slavic spearman)
Strategos Alexandros
05-15-2008, 18:04
Geographically and money wise I would be a Brigantes Lugoae or Botroas.
I would like to be a Kluddargos though.
Toxotai Kretikoi.
Thieving liars? Hell yeah.
i would of loved to be in a horse archer army
they just...cheat.
in reality i would of become a priest and never set foot in a battle, and if the enemy got near my location a naked fanatic
geographically, i would be a campanian cavalry, or an akontistai, or a levy hoplite, or a samnite, or a rorario etc.
ethnically i cant say, i should split myself in all the thousand and thousand combinations back to 2000 years ago, i could find every think..., it's totally impossible.
what i want to be if i had a machine time that throw me back in ancient times?
i think an ancillary, a sort of mad poet, a joker, a totally baroque, empty and complicated sophist or something like that...

05-16-2008, 03:40
I could afford to be a militia hoplite (middle class free man, but not a land owner...) but I'd like to be an Indo-Greek Noble Hoplite! I think that being way out on the very forgotten edge of Western civilization, and yet having villas and slaves for being an elite warrior would be amazing... Plus it would be a meritocracy, so your lack of of family status would not count against you, rather your ethnicity and ambition would be decisive. That's the type of place that appeals to an American, descended as we are from a bunch of people who left the old world to find better opportunities at the edge of (then) civilization...
By the above statement, I am just saying that we have a national fetish for the "frontier" and that that would carry over into my fantasy unit type...
Geographically and money taken into account I would be a Botroas, Iosatae or Gaelaiche.
I would like to be in any elite really. Good pay, little chance of actually dying, partly because of the equipment and partly because in most battles no-one wants to waste us.

I think a Roman legionnary, especially after the early imperial era. You could basically demand to get paid what you wanted, kill the emperor if he didnt agree and after serving your term, retire to some nice spot with a lot of cash. Plus many of them didnt really see that much action and could come from virtually any social or cultural background... :egypt:
