Playing first campaign as English. Doing okay. Elmos have declared war vs. me in Spain. They have attacked twice with HUGE armies.

Only, both times, I was able to defend across a river. It is TOO easy.

133 Spearman can hold his ENTIRE army on the bridge while my archers have their way.

I am not complaining, but is defending a bridge this easy for everyone???

That is the problem with Bridges ...

Only a few man (compared to the size of an Army) can get oven/upon it at the same time.
Only the first few of them can fight, so the fight takes longer and you can hold a force way greater than yours ... your men will get exausted over the time while the enemys will be well rested, tho.

To pepper the enemy with Archers/Arbs from the flanks aiming for the back/middle of the enemy formation is quite clever ... try some ordinary catapults, but aim them at an enemy unit that is on the bridge but not in close combat http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif !

its a lot easier than in STW - if it was a river province, it was a river province, no matter how you looked at it - this is an improvement, in fact I think I've fought two river battles in about 8 campaigns...maybe thats just the way I fight...

dont feel guilty cause when they can attack ya on land only provs its extremly difficult to beat them even though ive got largest armys most money and best technoloy i find fighting them a long hard battle which takes 100 years each time we fight

It seems easy now but when i was attacking them the bastards put AUM's on each bridge and there archers just took me out i still won but i lost 1698 while they lost 1320.....so enjoy it while it lasts http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I fired a bombard shot down the length of a crowded bridge once. Not pretty.

Well in STW when you attacked on a bridge map the AI would always be waiting for you at the other side of the bridge, ready to pounce on any troops you tried to send across. In MTW the AI seems to overlook this simple tactic and often will set up its forces quite some distance from the bridge, giving me plenty of time to get my army across without much problem. Attacking across bridges in STW were real nail biters, even if you chose to exploit the AI and lure its units across to your side one at a time.

I find the AI still uses the Shogun tactic, however this is a massive weakness. If you take an ordinary catapult to a bridge crossing and stick it as far forward as you can get you will generally be able to get a shot at his general. Once the general is dead (time lapse it, you're bound to get him sooner or later) you can hammer the army until the ammo runs out then cross.

I rember crossing a bridge once with the AI on the other side. He decided to change just as my men were coming over the bridge. The bloody battle that Ensued was just bloody. At the end I still was victorious but My army was pretty much down to noting now.

I hate bridges.
