View Full Version : NEW Fix for CTD when starting campaign (Nvidia, High End Cards)

Hello,
since I got my Nvidia 8800GTS I could not start MTW anymore, which was especially annoying because I bought the Eras Package. I even tried an old MTW version but it also did not work. After reading in various forums I thought it had something to do with the Nvidia Graphics Driver.
When I updated the driver tonight (version 175.16) I decided to give MTW another try. CTD when starting a campaign, just as I was fearing.
However, for some reason I also installed the Napoleon Total War Mod and tried again... SUDDENLY IT STARTED PERFECTLY. :dizzy2:
So it could not be a graphics driver issue... I started toying around, removed and cleanly installed MTW, made a backup and tried to find out what made MTW work when I installed the Mod. I succeded to narrow the problem down to TWO FILES:
button_ipnext.BIF and button_ipprev.BIF in the "Medieval - Total War\campmap\buttons" Folder.
I verified it by using the clean, vanilla installation and only replacing those two files with the ones from the Mod.
NO CTD'S UNTIL NOW ANY MORE !!! :laugh4: :laugh4:
So to all those out there who also have the CTD problem when starting a campaign: Please try it out and report if it works for you.
Since this is my first post I am not allowed to enter a direct Link to a zip file containing the two buttons, so please look here: rapidshare.com / files / 115211547 / MTW_Gold_v2.01_CTD_Fix.zip . html (just remove the empty spaces between the words).
Alternatively you can of course install the NTW1 Mod.

Allow me to officially welcome you to the Org, peter_de123! How wonderful that your first post here also contains a possible solution for people having problems running the game. My hat's off to you, sir. :medievalcheers:

Indeed. I've already added it. ~:)
Is this the isolation of the problem that's usually solved by the 2xAntiAliasing setting, or something beyond that?
I guess the next question is, what's different between the BIF files?
Welcome to the .Org, peter_de123! ~

Welcome to the org, peter_de. :2thumbsup:
And I can't thank you enough that you've found a way to fix this issue that has plagued a many MTW players for a very long time.
Although it never affected me personally, it is still a great leap forward for the players of MTW.

That's excellent news. I haven't been affected either, but I'm glad for all the others that there seems to be a workaround. In case this turns out to be a viable solution (let's wait for the reports of other players) this surely deserves an applause.

This is most interesting - Peter, was your MTW installation include VI?
Also - a questions to modders - does a mod such as XL change the files mentioned by Peter? If I mod to Xl after installation, do I do the change then or is before Mod OK??
Those files seem to be with the GUI, so any total conversion would probably change those files. The super mod, XL, and the MedMod probably don't change those files as well as the some of the newer mods that also keep the timeframe (i.e. Pocket Mod). But I wouldn't know for sure if XL does or does not change those files mentioned. :uneasy:

Thanks for the praise, but let us wait until we hear from other people who had the problem.
I installed MTW from the Total War Eras Edition, so it is actually the GOLD Version, which includes Viking Invasion.
I don't expect this to be the general solution for the CTD-Campaign screen problem, but every single player who is helped by this will certainly be happy about it.

I'm reinstalling MTW Gold right now to see if this solves the problem for me. If it does...yay. If it doesn't...I sure hope this computer decides to recognise the M2TW DVD, because if it doesn't, I will snap that game in half (when I first had it it played up, damaged DVDs...now, the computer seeks to ruin just about everything for me, be it work or games). Then, I'll just be left with RTW, which I recently uninstalled to make room for M2...
EDIT: Okay, it seemed to fix the campaign map. Nvidia 8600GT or whatever the card is called, used to crash just as the load bar had completed. However, battles are still an issue - units appear ABOVE their cards (when you move the camera view, if any units are at the bottom of the screen, they don't disappear under the cards), and the attack cursor still does not appear when hovering the cursor over enemy units (another issue is units not going where they are supposed to). I'm assuming a similar fix might work for this, though? Could be some files once again?
And yes, I am grateful to you for this - but what about battles? It's just not MTW without those lovely battles...:(
EDIT 2: Just checked the official Total War website, and yeah, it's those mouse-over problems I'm still having.

By the way, I'm messing around today to see if this fix works while playing XL, and I'd just like to point out that, according to the 'date modified' column, it doesn't look like the mod changes the two files. Of course, I installed the fix after XL, so I could be wrong...
NEWSFLASH!!! I just tried battles, and they seem to be fubared regardless of resolution (or mod). Now, I was hoping 2048x1546 or whatever the one resolution is (2048x1536? Think it's double 1024x768) would work, but it meant I had to alt-tab and close MTW from the Windows Task Manager (screen was entirely blank). 640x480 didn't work either (thought it did for a moment). HOWEVER - I tried one thing randomly - clicking on the radar map. That seems to work properly still. I can send my units where I want, and the attack cursor properly appears. Now, it isn't perfect, and might take some getting used to, but it is good enough considering the problems people have been having. I'm going to go and explore a bit more with this, fighting battles and all that, to test it out.
EDIT 2: The only issue using the radar map seems to be that I can't alter the depth of my units in battle. A shame, really, but then again, we might have to do without, because for all intents and purposes, we can play battles again. LOL. Question: Does the computer ever alter the depth of units, or is that an ability reserved only for the Human player? If only the Human can do it, I'll be more than happy to consider an inability to change rank depth something that levels the playing field.

So, I was thinking...anyone up for looking into this further? Peter_de123 has started the ball rolling, and I think we might be able to sort out the battlemap too. One major point there is that, although elements of the battlemap do not line up properly, giving mouse-over problems, other elements do. The radar map allows you to move units to the correct place, albeit in a more difficult manner, and attack enemy units properly, and the other buttons on screen still work. It could be an unresolvable graphics issue, but it seemed like that for the campaign map - maybe, as with the campaign map, certain files don't agree with the Nvidia drivers, and we could tweak them to work?

So, am I to understand that this is a dead thread, and no one at all is interested in looking any further into this? Peter has given us some important groundwork here, he might have given us the route to stuffing those driver problems once and for all...and he might not have, but I do kinda feel ignored in what I've said, and surprised no one is interested at all...

Since I run with an ATI card, I don't see the problems. I also am not familiar with what is involved with the BIF files and their format. Maybe this should be brought up in the modding forum, to see if any light bulbs go on there. My guess is that there is a rendering feature causing it that the Napoleon mod guys don't use. But I don't do graphics, that's just an edumacated guess from a software guy.
I don't think it's that no one is interested, so much as it is that not a whole lot of us possess the necessary expertise to be able to mess around and find the solution (goodness knows I certainly don't, anyway :embarassed: ).
As for moving this thread to a more appropriate sub-forum, I'd considered moving it to the Alchemist Lab, except that it's not exactly the busiest of places and might therefore take even longer to get a response there. Perhaps the Apothecary? :juggle2:
button_ipnext.BIF and button_ipprev.BIF are the up and down scroll arrows for the review panel. They are already known to cause visual glitches. If you have an annoying flashing bit at the top of the screen directly above them then this is why. I had no idea they were actually causing the CTD though, so this is an important discovery.
In retrospect this can also explain the corrupted GA cup icon on the review panel and the crash I was having when clicking on constantinople after ending a turn. That was probably also caused by the review panel up/down scroll arrows appearing.
As to the in battle synchonisation issue, AFAIK this is an Nvidia video card driver related problem. I have not seen or heard of this occurring on ATI cards.
In basic terms the mouse clicks are not being translated correctly onto the 3D space. If you can downgrade to older drivers, that may solve it. In my case it did not but changing settings in the Nvidia control panel eliminated the problem entirely. You can try those settings yourself, they are in the CTDs thread in the apothecary.

Hi
On wot Nvidea card will MTW VI run propaly cane somme one name a fue :help:
It can usually be run on 7xxx series cards under XP without issue, though under Vista it could be a problem.
Is there going to be a update for this problem ? or wot about the 9000 series?
Is there going to be a update for this problem ?
Not as far as I'm aware.
...or wot about the 9000 series?
I'm assuming you mean Nvidia 9xxx series cards and not old ATI 9000 series cards? Assuming it's the former there are no known cases of users trying to run MTW on a 9xxx series card as yet (unless I've missed something?). It's likely to be much the same as 8xxx series cards however.
Unfortunately if you want to play games like MTW you will probably need to keep an older system handy for that purpose.
Hi Cynwulf,
thx for your reply, so this meens in a fue years nearly no one cant play MTW VI anymore becose the old grafic cards arent for sale then and the driver updates will just be for newer cards, it will be Nvidea 8000 or 9000?? i find it hard to believe that there will be no updates for this.
i got more old games running just fine its only MTWVI wot cant be played and this is my favorite:furious3: isnt there any thing we cane do or sega????
is it just the Nvidia 8/9-series cards that have this problem? If so you could use another card,if there's anything that matches the speed of the 8 and 9 series cards.
Hi mate
I know wot you meen mate, but i dont think there s a grafic card with simler speed, becose i also use other games and programs wot require s a better card like 8000.
But i dont think its got to do somme thing with the grafic card, but with updates and drivers this all started with the new grafic card wot been also made for windows vista.
so i think there will be updates or drivers wot will fix this in time, i cant believe that they will not do any thing with it becose they want to sell there game s to  and there will be only newer cards wot will hold Vista so i think there will be updates.
Maybe the community cane do somme thing
In my humble little opinion, peter de123 should be properly sainted for this discovery...
My ATI-sapphire Radeon x1950Pro AGP, would not go anywhere near a MTW-campaign until I found out about this and I fashioned some replacement-files of my own, all according to peter de123's info and files he supplied. Since then there have not been any problems at all with MTW.
- Now, I am not able to determine here if this thread got a sticky or not, but if it don’t, I sure think that it deserves one.

Ok, I've downloaded and then extracted the files to my desktop but I'm unfortunately pretty darn clueless when it comes to computer stuff... What do I do now? heh.
Do I put these two files into my MTW gold edition folder or what? :help:
Well I'm not sure where the MTW Gold Edition installs to, but it should be something like:
C:\Sega\Medieval - Total War Gold\campmap\buttons
Or:
C:\Medieval - Total War Gold\campmap\buttons
Just copy the files into the \campmap\buttons directory and it should prompt you as to whether you want to overwrite, click yes.

So If I read this correctly, you only have to replace these TWO files? And yes I have the 8800 GT VC, and yes the game crashes when I load up the campaign game, I'm gonna reinstall the game and see if this works!

Finally. I am able to play this game for the first time. Thank you.
Here is the system I am running it on in case anyone was wondering about compatability:
Vista Ultimate 64-bit
E8600, 780i, 4GB DDR2
GTX 280 (181.20)
X-fi Fatal1ty
Sadly while replacing the two small files gets the game running to the Campaign calendar part of the game, it doesn't resolve the issue about the mouse not recognising or moving units in real-tile battles. I was so upbeat about having repaired the game until I tried the first battle, and the same fault occurred.
Is it an nVidia driver issue (just downloaded the latest drivers dated 21/1/09 which didn't cure it) or can anyone recommend a few graphics tweaks to cure the problem on an 8800 card?
The two button files will only cure problems with the campaign map, this is because they are physical parts of the campaign map UI (the up/down arrows on the unit/building review panel at the bottom of your screen).
There is no cure for the problem in battles. It is caused by the Nvidia display drivers. I advise that you have a quick skim through the thread below. You will not see any solutions there, but it will give you an idea of the scale and duration of this problem. So far Nvidia have not commented, nor have they done anything to help their customers. You will see that of those that contacted tech support, I think pretty much all were told that the game itself was to blame.
I advise that if you want have any hope at all of running this game, you should invest in an ATI graphics card. It is not guaranteed that it will work, but people are having much more success with ATI than they are with Nvidia 8xxx and 9xxx series graphics cards.
http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=40869&st=0&start=0
I wonder if the settings in the nvidia control panel can be set in some special configuration to emualate the older cards for MTW...
This has been attempted before but is always worth attempting again. I had seen the problem on a 7xxx series Nvidia card and changing some settings did seem to solve it. On 8xxx and 9xxx series cards none have had any luck so far however.
This is the thread at Nvidia forums relating to this exact issue: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=40869
Thanks peter. Really odd though, I installed on my new machine and it ran perfectly. Then I had to reinstall since my machine decided to delete the exes and dlls for both MTW and RTW. After that I got this error. :dizzy:

I'm sorry to bump this but does anyone know why it worked fine last night? I mean I managed to play the campaign for few hours although with crashes. I got CTD when I tried to click interface etc. Today, earlier, I couldn't even load a new campaign or my saved campaign from last night. I'm running Vista Home Premium, Dual AMD 5200, etc. in case you're wondering.
Anyway, I downloaded the two buttons and its working again now. Thanks so much for the trouble finding it. I don't have BIF reader on this machine but I plan to look at the N:TW buttons and the default ones and try to see what the problem is.. soon. I'll let you know if I do but can't promise lol.

I used the same ones to install plus one (VI disc). I'm sure the 1.1 uses the same buttons so download them if you haven't. I have Vista with intergrated chip, GeForce 6150 SE. My campaign map crash was solved by installing these buttons. Also, I used to have crashed on battle map too but those were gone as soon as I switched my desktop resolution, battle map and campaign map to 1024x768. I also went to Nvidia control panel and changed anti aliasing to 2x but it must be changed globally or it will revert back. I'm a happy guy now because I have not crashed ever since! Well, except when trying to exit from campaign map because I play XL mod in debug mode lol.
The Gold edition just doesn't install.
What you mean by this? Bad cd I'm guessing?

I know it is actually a bit unrelated, but I am not where else to post my little moment of joy:
I had an oldish comp, with an ATI Radeon X1650 on it, that was perfectly happy to run MTW for me.
Then, disaster! My graphics card died a month ago. After a bit of a small epic, I replaced it with an EAH4550 (Radeon tech Asus card). Sure enough, That card was wayyy to modern to bother with something as fustian as MTW. :disappointed:
And then it occured to me :idea2:: As my machine is oldish, what about the onboard graphics?
Nervously, I rebooted my computer, nestling the monitor plug with shaking hands out of the graphics card slot, and plugging it into the onboard exit (Nvidia 6100). AND LO! :laugh3: The game is running again. :smug2:
So, if your machine is about 2 years or older, your onboard graphics port might be your best friend for running MTW, should your snazzy new GPU refuse to cooperate.

I'm running MTW on a new laptop with a Radeon Mobility 4850 card. No problems. Glad you got it running one way or another, but you should be able to get it working on your new card.
thank you for the fix !

I got a new card a few months ago - Nvidea GeForce 6200.
Been playing other games, mainly called Shogun:TW. Then finally got back to M:TW, only to get this horrible CTD bug. Thankfully these two little files seem to have fixed the problem :2thumbsup: and I'm now trying out the Sicilians for the first time.
BTW, these files came from a Nap mod? Is the rest of the mod worth a try? I've not tried a mod before, so thought of giving it a go. The one I noticed in the Downloads seems to have various bits and pieces to download with no explanation of what is needed or what to do with them. :help:
Works like a charm, Thanks.
I'm still having a problem with the battlemap. The battle map loads but I'm getting a flickering of the screen. The pointer arrow also leaves trails when I move the mouse. With the game options I can only set the resolution of the battle map to 640 x 480. I have Nvidia 9600. Any sugestions would be appreciated.

Try Alt & Tab; this puts the game onto the Taskbar. You then click on it there and it comes back up ( hopefully ) fixed ( until the next time... ).
HELP !!
I have just tried to download the
"rapidshare.com/files/115211547/MTWGoldv2.01CTDFix.zip" file from rapidshare.com and cannot as the search engine cannot trace the file!!
I did try to download this file just before Xmas ( 2009 ) and found that the free download did not work. I then decided to pay using Paypal and was doing OK until I found out that the Credit Card I had listed with Paypal had expired and Paypal tried to debit my Cheque A/C, but got refused. This cancelled my transaction. I did set up a new credit card with Paypal shortly after, but did not revist Rapidshare at that time to recommence the transaction. Big mistake !!
It seems that rapidshare have revamped their systems since then, as the access etc. is completly different now. The new search engine cannot find the file at all (so maybe the file is no longer hosted ? ) !!
Therefore the link information provided by Peter123 is now ( I think ) redundant!!
Can anyone else provide the relevant "ipnext.bif" & "ipprev.bif" buttons for me direct or make them available somewhere and provide the link information here ??
Many thanks.

I feel a trite foolish after trying your link!
In my defence I did various searches on the rapidshare.com website.
Following Peter123's instructions ( incorrectly ), I tried :-
MTWGoldv2.01CTD
MTWGoldv2.01CTDFix.
MTWGoldv2.01CTDFix.zip
files ( no trace ! )
115211547
files/115211547
files/115211547/MTWGoldv2.01CTDFix.zip.
Evidently I should have left in those _'s and/or the .html !!
Thanks for putting me right. Sorry re any "panic" caused.
File downloaded today.
It was very quick & easy ( minute or so max - unlike my previous attempt before xmas ) !
I have finally "Patched" my MTW+VI with the revised "Buttons".
I thought it may be useful to someone to advise the results of the "patch".
I have noted improvements as follows -
1) No CTD ( to date ) when clicking on "Resume" after ( say ) "Saving" - this was my main problem. Hopefully it is now cured.
2) I now have access ( finally ), to the two Tutorials!!
3) An apparent increase in "panning" speed when using the mouse cursor.
There is a possable slight increase in the occurance of "Drops to Taskbar". However, when this occurs, the game does not crash and just needs "reinstating" to full screen. To date, no such Drop to Taskbar has occurred during a Battle, and if anything, it occurs during the game boot up or whilst the introduction etc. is running.
Further comments to follow in due course re :
1) CTD when clicking on a particular province/s.
2) CTD when clicking on the arrows in the Training and or Building queue's, when the said province/s is reached.
NB: These two usually involve a province that has more buildings than the space allocated for viewing those buildings can hold, and occurs a few turns after the extra Building is built. I have no such province at present.
FYI: I have bought Shogun TW Gold Edition and it works perfect with my NVIDIA 6800 (battles and campaign).
I also have Medieval TW with the VI ad-on, but I can only play the campaign map. Battles still have the problem with the mouse stalling.
That is NVidia 8600 to be correct, with Windows XP and Intel Dual Core 3.0 GHz
Welcome MTW,
The issues in-battle affecting the Nvidia 8xxx/9xxx series cards do not affect the 6xxx/7xxx series.

I had the issue of the campaign map crashing directly after its loading and i resolved it. But when it came to playing a battle, I had the problem of th mouse stalling, any help with this issue please? Thx in advance.

This is exactly my problem, I have the nVidia GeForce 9600

I have just the base game (not Gold or VI). I tried using the Napoleon Mod method however it did not work. Advice?
OS: Windows 7
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 335M
What symptoms are you seeing? CTD at the start of the campaign, unit control issues in battles, or other? I believe Windows 7 has a whole new set of issues as well.

Only CTD at campaign map. Battles work fine.
Are you running MTW straight up in Win7, or are you trying the compatibility modes? Some have had success with Win98 or Win2000 compatibility modes.
Seventhplain

I'm running it straight. How do you run Compatibility mode?
Right click on the MTW desktop icon, select "Properties". Click on the "Compatibility" tab, and check the box for "Run this program in compatibility mode for:". Select the Windows mode from the dropdown menu and hit OK or Apply to save.

Using Windows Vista and my graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce 9200 GS.
Unfortunately, I don't believe there are any workarounds to the battlemap unit control issue with nVidia 8/9 series cards. I've got an experiment I want to try, but I just don't have time right now (RL is kicking my tail atm ) to work through it.

Alright, would you say what you were going to do? Maybe I could try it out?
I want to try to run WinXP in a VM, with virtualized hardware. I'm curious to see if something like VMWare Player could bypass these issues. As long as you have a fairly new machine, XP/MTW shouldn't stress it it too badly. I guess it will depend on how the VM handles DirectX calls.
Further to my post of 19th May 2010,
No more Crashes to Desktop with error Warnings !! All existing problems solved !!
I now get a few Drops to taskbar ( which reverse perfectly - even during a Battle ) , but that's all.
It appears my Vista O/S does not like me playing the game whilst "background" tasks are running just after Booting up! But this I can cope with!
Excellent.
On the Vista line of thinking, both STW and MTW start up really weird when I have other programs running and minimized. STW was the worst, I got graphical glitches, and both zip up and down from the taskbar while coming up. I had to stop UAC on Vista as well, the "interrupt" while it checks the program out (for your own good!) broke a lot of older games.
Yesterday, I had my first two CTD's since applying the Button Patch...
The first CTD occurred whilst I was moving an Assassin ( Burgundy to Provence or Toulouse )!
Here I lost a game year ( events but no battle/s ), plus my moves etc. ; as I had forgotten to save after
the Events & Battles had been completed ( following hitting the End Turn Button ).
( All events except two were the same ( for me ). The first difference was that my King did NOT die of an illness; the second that my best Assassin ( Guy of Gisbourne ) failed his mission and was executed!! )
The second CTD occurred during a battle. If I recall correctly, I was moving a unit to/from the main Army/Reinforcements boxes, on the pre battle screen.
Here I lost nothing, as I had saved the game, using the Quick Save at the top of the pre battle screen.
Moral - remember to save - ALWAYS!!
[ NB : I tend to save ( when I remember ) :
a) Directly before hitting the End Turn ( Next Year ) Button
b) Before any Battle ( Battle Screen Quick Save )
c) Upon completion of the Events & Battles by the AI
and sometimes after moving my units around, but before I review taxes, build buildings, train units, etc.. ]
Strangely, when I repeated each of the "moves" that caused each CTD, nothing happened...
Excellent.

Strange. On my Vista O/S I have not had the same problems with STW as I have had with MTW.
To date, I have not had any troubles with the UAC either, for any of my games, other than two ( MTW is one, but not STW ), where I need to confirm that the O/S can proceed before it starts running the game. Maybe it's because we have different Graphic's Cards...
Hello,
since I got my Nvidia 8800GTS I could not start MTW anymore, which was especially annoying because I bought the Eras Package.
Friend!!! you are the M.F boss, I'll be grateful for eternity, this crap of modern video cards do not know what a good game, thanks for the solution. MTW forever

Welcome to the Org, NEDEUS! ~
Glad it worked for you. If you don't mind, what are your system specs (OS, video card, memory)? I'm assuming by your tone that you are not having the battlemap issues others have seen with the nVidia 8/9 series cards? I'm trying to get as much data as possible for what works and what doesn't with MTW these days.
Welcome to the org and the main hall NEDEUS, enjoy your stay
I have strange problem. Everything is working fine, untill i'm trying to start battle on map with river. Somtimes game crashes after seconds, somtimes after couple of minutes. Anyone know why?
Don't think I've heard that one before, maybe a rendering issue with water? What are your system specs?
Welcome to the Org, Kopta! ~
You can take out all the river maps - this way you get more interesting battles anyway. In my mod i've done just that - although for gameplay reasons. I don't know what may be causing it.
drone is most likely right, it could well be a rendering issue - if my memory serves me correctly I get strange looking water in battles, I've been to the doctor about it but he said...
What graphics card is it? Have you tried changing any settings or using default settings? What resolution are you running the game at?
ATI radeon HD 4800, on lower resolution it's better, i finish a battle after fifth try.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand now its my turn to wring hands and grumble! :P
Hey all, I hope all is well!
Hopefully I can show my own empire progress on M:TW once I get the sod working!
I decided to post here, since it seemed the most appropriate, I don't have a Nvidia or.. other card, but I didn't want to clutter the ol' forum.
Anyway, onto my problem:
I have a R510 laptop, all drivers updated, vista sp2 updated, medieval (one): total war patched with the oldest patch (1.1) and it's still not playing ball, I can load battles just fine, video works fine, it's just the campaign!
I select whom I want to play, it loads up and then goes into the pause menu. Whenever I try and resume game, it just goes back to the pause menu. Do this a couple of times (or just leave it on this menu) and it crashes to Desktop with no error messages.
Before posting I tried the solutions given, example:
Keep to the same resolutions
run in compatibility mode xp sp2
try with 16 bit colour
replace the vanilla campaign button icon with the updated one
but still exactly the same problem :/
I can't change graphics card either since.. well, it's a laptop.
Can anyone here help, or am I doomed to go on my next exercise without a decent game to play?!
If it helps, the spec of my laptop is-
System Model: R510/P510
Bios: Phoenix SecureCore NB Version 06LI.MP00.20080919.SCY
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T5750@2.00Ghz
Memory: 3032MB Ram
Graphics: Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family
Main Driver: igdumdx32.dll,igd10umd32.dll
Version: 8.15.0010.2302 (English)
DX: 11
Thanks for taking the time to read this and for replying
Edit: Forgot to mention, It's Medieval (one): Total war, not any of the expansion packs or gold edition, although I could probably get it off of amazon if gold is needed to play hah. I'm pretty impatient, but I MIGHT be able to last a week without total war before cracking up... o.o
Welcome to the Org, Greyacid! ~
Intel graphics chipset, this has been a problem. What resolution are you trying to run with?
The only things I can think of are to try different resolutions, add a skipcredits.txt file in the top level of your MTW folder, try Win2000 compatibility mode instead of XP, and maybe turn off Vista's UAC.
Anyone else got any ideas?

:D Thanks Drone, it's nice to be here, and thanks for the reply!
Before I launch the game, I switch to 1024x768 to match the largest option in the video menu, and it still gives the same crash to desktop at the same place.
Yeah, tried 2k as well as XP SP 2.
Never tried the text file, but the video at the start works fine. Unless 'Skipcredits' is something else? :s Do I have to have anything in the text file, or can I leave it blank?
How would I turn of Vistas' 'UAC'?
The skipcredits.txt file can be just an empty file. It will skip the intro movies, it probably won't help your problem, but it's easy and worth a shot.
UAC is Vista's User Account Control "security" feature. It's the annoying pop-up you get when you try to run anything that requires admin privileges, good idea in theory, poor execution due to legacy issues. I've had it cause problems in older games, there should be a way to turn it off in the Control Panel (not on my home PC at the moment, so I can't remember exactly what to click).

All I can say is what I have already said a 1000 times. For the people so inclined, download and install Redux, that might open up a few doors where as the original MTW will not. Redux has all known fixes (or similar counterparts) built in by default and possibly then some. In my experience Redux is thus more agreeable to various newer hardware then raw MTW.
Obviously, playing the original MTW will then not be possible - on that particular install anyways. Redux are compatible to both V1.1 and VI/V.2.01 (including Gold and Eras-editions). It works on W2000, XP and W7. To find Redux, click on my sig.
It might help some people.

Hi everyone!
I have MTW + VI. I have my own fix with buttons described above. Also, that rapidshare link does not work anymore. But first the story.
So, I was playing campaign for a while and it start crashing all the time. Couldn't even play for a very quick moment. Few clicks and crash. So I start reading posts. Did everything that was advised as a solution. Nope. Came across this post and could not find a good link for those buttons archive. Eventually found it and downloaded. Did not work. But then, game stopped crashing and I played with no crashing until I quit the game. Then, I wanted to play again and the same problem - CDT right after I loaded the game and did few clicks. So, I started to track my actions to see when the game really crash. I noticed that it crashes only when I click one province and only. Why!? So I thought for a while what is so diferrent about that province. And I found what is that. That province had number of building built so they could no longer be displayed in one page. So, I loaded the game and clicked on that province. Game froze before the crash just enough to see that the arrow button that supposed to appear to allow changing to the next page is not shown. So, I figured that the dude is right and it is really buttons. So, I was thinking that if buttons fix I downloaded does not help and one moment those buttons were loaded correctly, as I mentioned above I could play for as long as I needed before I quit the game, I need to find what to do to make them to be loaded correctly. Unfortunately was not lucky. Then I thought, well if other buttons work well why just not copy any other buttons and rename them to have the same name as bad buttons. Who cares they does not fit or looks ugly, important is it that game works. I did so by renaming ipnext and ipprev. They sort of the same arrows. Loaded my game and clicked that province. Worked! Button were not actually ugly and fit well. Just minor overlapping. But the most important it worked. Had not play long so far. Tried, worked and decided to post about it as probably there's many people struggling with this. We'll see how it works further. But this fixes only one issue with buttons. Still have frequent CDT on loading games.
Hope this will help others.
First off, welcome to the Org, Shandor.
Second, thanks for letting me know the rapidshare link is no longer functioning. That seems to happen a lot. ~ I'll see if I can get it uploaded to our host for a more permanent link.
Thirdly, was it the ipnext.bif and ipprev.bif files you replaced (as well as button_ipnext.bif and button_ipprev.bif the fix was meant for)? I've always thought most of the CTD issues were just incompatible rendering issues, so I should probably out to learn more about the .bif stuff and what the original files did, but I'm not much of a modder. It wouldn't surprise me if other bifs don't hold the CTD trigger.
Well, first I made copy of ipnext.bif and ipprev.bif and renamed them as button_ipnext.bif and button_ipprev.bif. Worked much better as it was still crashing but not every time I clicked the province. Also buttons have brown background. Then I made copy and renamed, don't remember well not as I'm writing this from work, arrow_up.bif and arrow_down.bif as button_ipnext.bif and button_ipprev.bif. This seems solve the issue. So far no CDT when clicking province where buildings does not fit in one page. Also this seems to fix CDT when loading games and going to menu.
But I still have CDT after battles. Reverted to Vista drivers because I remember I had not problem running MTW + VI on Vista. No CDT at all. But reverting to Vista dirvers did not work. Still CDT. Seems Windows 7 to be great issue. On new systems MTW will crash no matter what if VI is not installed. I remember on Vista I could not get MTW running at all, was crashing all the time when starting campaign and none of the solutions helped. After installing VI it was working with no problem. Now as I have Windows 7 it constantly CDT. I also think it could be DirectX and not Windows 7. Reverting to older DirectX may solve the problem.

Any help would be really greatful! Thank you.

I think the problem is your Intel graphics card. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone has had much luck solving issues with the Intel graphics sets. You can try running in WinXP/2000 compatibility mode, updating your video drivers, and tweaking your video settings, but I'm afraid I can't offer any tried/true fixes.

but other problem came, CTD happen when play campaign at 1204 to 1205. when early era change to high era.
i tried to search again in the forum, but still didnt get the solution.
but after i change the version to 2.00, isntead of 2.01, now the problem didnt occur anymore.
BTW, i just copy the game from my old hardisk, not install it properly.

Not familiar with the numbering scheme of the Intel graphics, but from the laptop spec I assume it's the base model (hence the lack of numbering ~), HD Graphics (Ironlake/Arrandale configuration).
I doubt these suggestions will help (anecdotal superstitions most likely!), but you can try them just for the sake of it:
Make sure the video resolutions for both the battle and campaign match are set to the lowest settings (600x800 iirc).
If that doesn't work, match the battle/campaign video resolutions to the desktop resolution (1366x768?) if possible.
Try both fullscreen and widescreen settings for the game.
Create an empty file named "skipcredits.txt" in the top level dir of your MTW installation (this bypasses the start movie).
Make sure no other programs are running (browsers, email clients, explorer, etc) when starting the game.

Ok guys, I have installed the xl mod with the tyberius 3 version on my windows 8 pc. However, the campaigns dont start. Just when the loading seems to end, the game crashes to desktop. I have searched the web for a solution but nothing comes up and many people seem to have this issue with windows 8. None of the compatibilty mods work and I also tried the button fix solution. Nothing. This is deeply annoying since I was really prepeared to play as cumans and crush everything visible. Anyhow, if anyone has a solution for this please let me know.
Apart from Win 8, what are your system specs? Video card, memory, etc.?

AMD bulldozer 8 core,
16mb ram,
Ati 7850 hd graphics card
It runs most of the old games that i tried but i think that the medieval 1 is the oldest that i have tried until now.
Have you applied the button fix patch? ATI cards have generally been kind to MTW, but it still might help. You can also try running in WinXP or Win2000 compatibility mode.
Resolution fix might help too but... as drone wrote if campaign doesn't start with compatibility mode and button fix, there is very little hope.

Yeah unfortunately i tried all of those solutions none worked. I have been searching through the net and it seems that its a common issue with other windows 8 users. from now on i wont have high hopes but if u guys see a solution somewhere please let me know. And thanks.
I don't know anything about Win 8 (apart from the fact that I will never purchase it), but I assume the live tiles and start screen screw with MTW.
You might want to try running in Debug Mode. Copy the MTW shortcut (if that's even possible in 8), name the copy something like "Debug MTW", and edit the target to something like:
"C:\games\Medieval - Total War\Medieval_TW.exe" D
adding the D to the end.
This will open MTW in a 800x600 window. You will have to change the campaign and battle resolutions to 800x600 (sad, I know), but it might get you going.
You' re right. I might help but D has nothing to do with resolution. Main menu is always 800x600 but size of a campaign or battle map window will be exactly the same as you set in options. The window sticks to the upper left corner and it depends on you how much of the screen it'll cover. During testing I play using 1200x900 (17" 1440x900) and it works nice and smooth (but I use win XP).

Hey, I've been trying to play Medieval on my Acer Aspire Laptop, It's got an Intel i7-2630qm processor and an Nvidia Geforce GT 540M on Windows 7. A few months ago I was playing it and it didn't CTD once, until I got to a certain year in my campaign, as soon as the year started the program "stopped working" and it CTD. Now when I go on the campaign, it either crashes as soon as I get onto the strategy map, regardless of whether I make a new save, or it will crash maybe one or two years later. I tried the compatibility administrator thing but it said the program was 32 bit so it wouldn't fix it, I haven't tried the button fix so if that would help could someone tell me how to do that?
Welcome to the Org, Jedleh! ~
You can download the patch from post#1 of this thread, the "Local link" at the bottom is valid. The patch is just a zip file with 2 files inside, button_ipnext.BIF and button_ipprev.BIF. You want to put those 2 files in the campmap\buttons directory of your MTW install (rename the existing ones if you want to keep them around). That's pretty much all you have to do, hopefully it gets you going again!

Thanks for this fix! 6 years and a few video cards ago I got it working by back dating driver, I didn't really want to do that again. (don't know if I can) This works great! For the sake of helping any one interested, I'm running a AMD Sempron at 1.8 GHz, 1 gig of ram, a GeForce 8400 GS also with a gig of ram (if anyone wants to start playing violyn) I haven't got a new game since Company of Heroes came out. Discovered Europa Barbarorum about a year ago and have been hammering Roma Surrectum II 2.6 for about a month now. MTW is really a great old game and I'm getting back into it. For how long, who knows?
button_ipnext.BIF and button_ipprev.BIF in the "Medieval - Total War\campmap\buttons" Folder.

Hello, My name is Agustin, my pleasure meeting you. I want to use that fix, but cant file those files u ment ion in the xl el folders. u mean i have to get them from a clean instaL of mtw??
thnaks anyway it seems it truly works!
The CTD occurs when the game tries to render the original (vanilla) versions of those files. The fix is to replace them with new button files created for the Napolean MTW mod (you can get those two files from the links at the bottom of the first post in this thread), these new button images do not cause the crash for whatever reason. So you just need to take those two .bif files from the downloaded patch, and place them in the campmap\buttons directory (relative to the top level dir the game is installed at).
Hope that helps!
damn, now I figured out howa was the stuff (Thanks drone) it seems the rapidshare link is down, were can i find the mentioned napoleon mod to starct them from there??

Hi all,
thanks for the link,
I tried to place the two files but it still doesn't work.
My computer:
Windows 7
Acer
Aspire5732Z
Pentium(R) Dual-Core Cpu T4400 @ 2.20GHz
RAM 2.00 Go
64 bits
I have the two version of the game: for windows 7 and for 98/2000/xp, both of them crash when I start campaign...
Someone could help a poor sad french guy?
Thanks
Welcome to the Org, charles58! ~
Quick Googling the Aspire shows that it has the Intel GMA 4500 series video adapter, which does not bode well for getting MTW running. Can you verify that this is your video adapter?

Thank you for the welcome and the quick answer!
Yes I am running with the nasty Intel GMA 4500M... So there is nothing to do?
I'm upset, I love Total war series, I bought recently Empire+Napoléon, I can't install it because there is a problem with steam server connection,
so I bought my favourite, the old MTW for windows 7 and even this one leave me alone...

Ok, after 658 tries, steam works. Empire installation is running. Only 10h30 to wait... But no dream, i made a search, you're right, my video adapter sucks.
The Intel adapters cause fits for MTW unfortunately. If you have time to waste, you could experiment with VMWare, but I doubt it will get you anywhere.

My turn to have graphic card issues with MTW.
My specs:
Intel Quad Core i5 2.40GHZ
8 GB RAM DDR3
nVIDIA GeForce GT555M - 2GB video card memory
750GB HDD
Windows 7 64-bit
Now, the issue at hand is the fact that around 1095 my campaign goes bust. I can play for 10-15 turns or so, and then bam, CTD. No matter what I do, it crashes. :gah:
I didn't try the button fix yet, I just worked around with the Compatibility Mode and I'm using the Integrated Graphics Processor since the Nvidia card causes endless flickering.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
Is it always 1095? That's the Deus Volt year, maybe the event is causing the crash.

Not always 1095. It's also 1088 and I experienced 1091 as well.

None of these fixes work with win 8 unfortunately as the game won't even go past the legals splash screen. Is there any fix anyone has recently discovered on windows 8 (Even if it requires these fixes as well)? I heard the game doesn't like intel gpu's as well which my laptops is (Intel HD graphics 3000- can run rome 2 on low settings ok surprisingly btw)
When considering playing first MTW - Win 8 is bad, Intel gpu is bad, Win8 + Intel is beyond bad. I don't know which part is worse in this case. The game is 14 years old and it doesn't even recognize PCs with more than 2GB of ram correctly (that's why most of people needs resolution fix). I doubt there is a solution for your configuration but if you find one, please, let us know.

Exactly I haven't heard of anyone getting it to work on win 8 and also heard intel gpu's were bad before now
And don't worry I will let the whole community know if I find a solution

Ok guys, I have installed the xl mod with the tyberius 3 version on my windows 8 pc. However, the campaigns dont start. Just when the loading seems to end, the game crashes to desktop. I have searched the web for a solution but nothing comes up and many people seem to have this issue with windows 8. None of the compatibilty mods work and I also tried the button fix solution. Nothing. This is deeply annoying since I was really prepeared to play as cumans and crush everything visible. Anyhow, if anyone has a solution for this please let me know.
You got it running on windows 8 with XL? (I failed even with XL) you are lucky to get past the legal splash screen presumably Tyberius 3 is making it get past there in the first place may google that as I haven't heard of that.

Actually has anyone thought with mtw on windows 8 that the reason it crashes is just because one of the buttons on the main menu is incompatible? or has someone tried that and it runs deeper

I tried the buttons issue and it works on Windows 7, but I'm pretty sure it's still unstable later onwards in the game.
Just wanted to add that the buttons fix is working like a charm for me so far (this is on the XP half of my hard drive -- I've not tried it on the Win7 half).
Wish I'd noticed this fix sooner, but definitely better late than never! I'm just happy I can finally play MTW/VI again. :2thumbsup:
From the TWC, possible workaround for Win 8 (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?658303-Windows-8-1-compatibility).
What worked for me was a program called dxwnd: http://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/ (a program normally used to force programs into windowed mode using emulation) basically you want to use default settings except for the following changes:
1. Hot patch (obfuscated IAT) needs to be turned on under Main
2. turn on by default set no ALPHACHANNEL under DirectX
3. Under Direct3D turn off Clear Target Viewport
4. under libs change GDI to Emulated Device Context.
5. under compat change Limit Available Resources to on.
let me know if this makes sense. This seems to work on my windows 8.1 laptop at least.
oh and you need the 2.03.02 version or 2.03.03 (I used the 2.03.03 version, under binary versions but I don't know how it's different from 2.03.02)

I got a bee in my bonnet and went to play. First time in 3+ years. Old computer wasn't working, so I tried getting the game to run on my laptop. No dice. Thank you for sharing this file swap trick. It worked! Now, the battle screen has some weird ghosting going on, but nothing I can't live with...
Hello,
since I got my Nvidia 8800GTS I could not start MTW anymore, which was especially annoying because I bought the Eras Package.

Although looks like you have only 2 posts, and probably will never login again..
But after 8 years, I want to thank you one more time. I just applied your fix and it worked like a charm.
Maybe you will never know, but your fix is everywhere now. You are a legend, fixed the problem of thousands, and disappeared in the deep of internet forever, like a hero. But you will be remembered forever, and geeks will name their children "peter" to honor you.
Hi Everybody,
Do you know how I can install NTW1? I found a web which contain the mod but I cannot download the mod. The web page is http://www.thelordz.org/mods.html
Thanks,
MoKuS.
We have NTW v7 locally, try https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=131&id=617
If you look in the downloads section, the 7.1 patch should be there as well.

Apologies for the serious thread necro.... it's down to me having a dead PC and needing to get a replacement, ideally capable of running both MTW and M2TW. I'm trying to get this laptop to do it, it should have the oomph, but it has a lot going against it, too. The oddest thing is that it can play a demo for Rise of Nations (from an old mag freebie DVD), but won't play the full game.
Anyway, that's not the point. The point is I might have an explanation for why the 'button fix' works, and anyone with ReadBIF ought to be able to fix it for themselves. But as I don't have a game machine right now, I have to go from memory.
When I saw this solution, I looked at the files in question, and the one thing that stuck out was that most of the BIFs for the campmap and panel in the original game have colour mode #FFFF - all except the very ones that need to be replaced. Sure enough the NTW replacement buttons ARE also in #FFFF mode.
With ReadBIF you can open up the files and select the colour table. The final (ie bottom right-hand) entry in the colour table sets the colour mode. If this is set to pure white, the colour mode will be #FFFF (for some reason the originals are just a gnat's whisker off pure white, probably produced the day after CA's office party, or something....)
I THINK, if memory serves, that the indexed colours can be edited in ReadBIF - I can't test it now, alas - but failing that, the frames can be exported to .BMP and edited in Photoshop or similar then re-imported. However it's done, just save the modified BIF over the original file and I expect it will work fine, and with the original image instead of the + and - signs from NTW.

never mind the necro !
Good to see you back Mac ....
Will PM you soon re: those Ancient Updates ....cheers
If it's a sticky, it's not really a necro. ~D
That's a good find. I'll have to dig up my ReadBIF and see if this is one of the things they patched on the Steam version...

[QUOTE=droT
I moved my desktop and for reasons only the Furies know MTW would boot, but I got a black screen. So, I made sure I loaded the Direct X 8.1 and Direct3D and Direct Draw and acceleration were operable via my ATI program system check and guess what happened? See below:
The game booted up fine, let me choose a difficulty level, faction and era, and mess around with the Audio and Video options, etc...
But, when I try to actually start playing either a saved game or new game, it blows out to a main MTW screen, the brow fancy one with the loading bar which loads in red, and, get this--THE DISPLAY IS HORIZONTAL!!! And, if I press ESC, it blows back to the main menu screen.
I reinstalled the game along with the DirectX on the CD, and it does the same thing.
I asked for help in the Tech Support Forum and got a few suggestions, but they all revolve around the DirectX 8.1 needed and graphics drivers and whatever. However, remember I had changed nothing in the system, I simply moved the machine to another room.
What in heavens name is going on? Poltergeist???
Help, please, if anyone is still monitoring this forum and has a solution.
